I like to give a little extra to a few charities this time of year. Sadly it is getting harder to know what charity to give to and be confident most of the money donated is actually reaching the need and not spent on administration and fund raising events.
I am asking for your opinions or if you have some knowledge about which charities do the most good I would appreciate your thoughts.

This is a good resource, kat: http://www.charitynavigator.org/

I regularly give to the Red Cross. I like that you can give to specific things. I also donate to another organization that is important to me.

I think charity and giving are a personal thing and the best thing is to think about what is important to you. There are so many good ones out there. I think you are smart to think about who you are giving to since a lot of them do allocate to administrative much more than others.

If you want to go with a huge charity, the link Laura gave is an excellent one. There's also http://www.charitywatch.org/.

I try to do more local charities than national ones. I have this idea that if my money is going to help my local community it does more tangible good. Not that people in other place don't need help, but I feel more connected if I do something to help the people I see every day, you know?

Just in case anyone didn't know, you can help a charity of your choice through Amazon if you shop there. You just have to shop through their 'smile' link: https://smile.amazon.com/

    Always liked St. Jude's.

I did the Math-A-Thon and the Read-A-Thon years ago. Most fun has to be the local Polar Bear Plunge for the food pantry. It's always on a Saturday, so I go out out Friday night to the local bars and steal a little from vice for a good cause. Staying local is really the best way to go.

I can donate time, old clothes or money. They offer homeless jobs rather than just a handout when they can.

I do put something in the Salvation Army Kettle when they are out this time of year, probably not enough. Our fire department is all volunteer and I donate annually. I appreciate that people who volunteer for the job.

Thanks for all the good replies. I am going to check out a few of the suggestions.

St. Jude is awesome, Med Camps are awesome, but...

I like to find local, or kinda local internet type places to give. Always like the underdog, and like to help people in my own way.

Find one that makes you smile when you give. Your soul will smile as well.

Cancer UK and EyeCharity which is my hospital and my work charity fund to aid research into eye conditions.

But there are so many that do great work in various areas, I have to be negative also and say that the UN is a useless obsolete body as the USA and UK et al all donate and fix what this body should be doing rather than griping about world ills.

Dunno about most good, but I usually give to the Princess Margaret Children's Hospital; Asthma Research Foundation; R.S.L., (Returned Serviceman's League), etc. I have my reasons, the same as everybody else.

I was think of this subject more today mainly due to reading a few articles in which charities names were mentioned that I have never heard of but basically duplicate work of older more established charities like Save The Children, NSPCC etc

The articles were on poverty and child abuse, two areas I have no bones about we need to tackle but my issue is these *for me* unheard of charities are creating reports and surveys costing ££$$ to just tell us what we already know is the issues and how we need to tackle them, I feel the confusion comes from too many charities doing the same work battling out between each other for funds and then said funds getting lost in admin fees and logistics.

I have to call into question what impact do some of these make in the grand scheme of things and would it not be better to have larger all encompassing charities in a particular field.

I have to agree with comments on Salvation Army, emergency services. A big area I support is medical and kids. I have also donated to support the PEEK camera device from another thread as this will help mainly African countries as well an developed world make eye exams more easily accessible.

Right about now I think the ebst place to give your money to is the government, they are all broke.:-D

Any major cancer research charity has my vote, I'd say that though my dad is recovering from cancer.

Have a friend that once worked at a GoodWill place. They took donated glasses and could read the prescription. If both sides matched they were used to provide for people who needed. That kind of work I repect.

Lots of good charities mentioned in the post. After some thought I think for this year the charities where my biggest donations will be going is to a homeless shelter for women and children where they shelter, education and give job training, hopefully to get them back to being independent and the other charity is the Red Cross.

Indeed a fantastic cause, its seems to some in the UK (I can only comment on UK) but just giving benefits to folk to spend as they wish, is not the right way, your option of getting folk back on their feet, learn a skill and get back into work is more useful and positive imho.

Independence, pride and a sense that you are self sufficient is much better QoL than a free handout, that's the easy option in the end, and may not give you a better QoL than when you earn your own money.
