Start Up CPL Problem?

It was suggested by the Malware guys that I download and use Start Up CPL. I downloaded it to my download file, opened the zipped package and ran the program (exe.file) to install.

Sadly I can not find the program anywhere and have no idea if it is running, not running or if it is running what it is controlling.

This is probably my user error, but could someone help me out, please?

    Just found this:

Is there an icon for the program in Control Panel?

To see if it's running while it is closed, you can open Task Manager and then look to see if you see SCP.exe or CPL.exe or something of the like. Not sure what it is, as I haven't used the program before.

I suspect it just runs when you open it in control panel, poplulates the list of startups from the Windows registry, and then changes the registry for startups when you change your choices. In other words, I don't think it would need to run in the background to do what the program says it's supposed to do. i.e.-Changes made using the program are registered with Windows, which then maintains your startups choices...

Yes, you access the program through the control panel.

On all of my computers it has always extracted to the folder the zip file is in. Doesn't show in Program Folders, Start Menu or Control Panel. I keep a 'Tools' folder to copy such programs to for use later on.

There is nothing new when I open my Windows 7 Control Panel (Start/Control Panel).

When I open the Task Manager there is an application running called: startupcpl_exe.zip

Type "Startup" in the search box to see where the file is.

wwalker...top right corner of control panel where it says view by...set this to large icons (or small icons) if it is not already set this way. If you were set to Category and switched to icons view, take a look now. The icons are in alphabetical order, and you be looking for a Start Up CPL icon...

In task manager, click on and switch to the processes tab and look up and down the list to see if you can identify the process running...

I made the change to ICONS in the Control Panel and found "Startup (32 bit)", I didn't find a process in task manager that I could recognize as belonging to this program.

When I click on "Startup (32 bit)", it does display the Startup Control Panel. So I would guess it is working now. Thanks for helping me navigate to it.

Thanks for the help from all of you posting entries

Question #1: My PC is 64 bit. I do have other 32 bit icons in the Control panel but should I have a 64 bit "Start Up CPL"? If so, how would I delete this one since it is not displayed in Control Panel/Programs?

    assuming all is well,

Question #2: Now that I can find the Startup Control Panel, what adjustment or entries should I make within the tabs displayed?

No, they do the same thing.

Question#1: There is no 64-bit version of Startup CPL. It can be uninstalled like any other program, "Control Panel" > "Programs and Features". Or if you have Revo Unintstaller.

Question#2: We need to know what Startup CPL is listing for startups.

No worries there. It's just an applet. It might show up in Task Manager when you open it, I'm not sure. I was just curious on this. Didn't seem like anything that would run in the background during normal operations. Those are always visible in the Task Manager "Processes" tab.

With the standalone, you could place the folder anywhere and then drop a shortcut to the startup for the program on your desktop. This would just mean you wouldn't have to open Control Panel to change your startups. You don't need both, so it's just a matter of preference.

I think this actually is just a 32 bit program (no 64 bit version). Anyway, it's just about the functionality with this kind of app. Most 32 bit programs run on 64 bit, so as long as this is opening when you click on the icon, you are fine. If it opens with no error messages, then it's working with no conflicts.

Sent you a PM about this. The tabs are a little bit complicated...

Almost forgot to thank you guys. I appreciate the PM's AtlBo, everything seems to working fine. There are very few things loading at startup and I assume that is good since everything is working without a problem.

You're welcome and any time. Glad it's running well.

If you would like someone to take a look at your list of startups to see what you have there, maybe a little knowledge would go a long way so to speak. You can post them, and I or someone else will see if they can help you determine which ones you really need.

Some programs run on startup, because they are a benefit to the user somehow (like anti-virus (not optional here) or maybe a graphics driver software program (many stock PCs don't require or have software for the driver so there isn't any such thing to run)) and others maybe just for access to the settings of the program in the system tray in the right bottom corner. There are also some system ones that must run. For all except system processes, it's always the user's choice (meaning you can always choose to disable startup for the program), and most programs have a setting in their settings to enable or turn off the start on boot feature of the program. Windows has a way to do this (similar to Startup CPL), too, but it's not very convenient, so Startup CPL is really good for this.

Ultimately, it's best to limit startups as much as possible. They do use resources (even if not very much most of the time), so the best methodology is to eliminate all but the fully required ones. You can, of course, still fire up any program any time it is required.

Let us know if we can help with anything now or in the future... :)

AltBo, I would like to go through the process mentioned in your post to ensure everything is set up properly.

But first, I need to work on a Java problem. I am not sure when Java stopped working on my PC. It was working before the recent malware removal process I had mentioned earlier.

I went to a site that indicated that I needed Java installed. I checked and it was still installed (start/programs). So I decided that I probably needed to uninstall it and reinstall.

I removed it by going to the Control Panel/Programs and clicked on Java and uninstall. I went to Java.com and used the process on that site to download/install. But when I clicked on the Verify Installation step it said Java could not be found.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times now. Checked all my settings in my browser (IE) and in the Java Control Panel and everything is setup as it should be.

At this point, I have forgot exactly where I first detected the problem. So every time I have tried something I just return to Java.com and select "Do I have Java' and then try to verify Java. It fails every time.

Sorry I have checked other threads here at MG and attempted some of the suggestions mentioned getting a failure every time.

The only thing in Startup CPL that mentions Java is in the HKLM / Run tab -- SunJavaUpdateSched. I unclicked it and Uninstalled/Installed Java with the same results.

I finally give up. Do you think you could help me on this problem?

You might want to read this and many similar articles about Java. For at least two years now the universal advice has been to uninstall Java and keep it uninstalled, as it is a major security risk. You will still come across sites that say they need it and in that case you have to decide whether it's important enough to take the risk or not, though as it seems it won't run on your Win 7 you are safe anyway. Perhaps the major browsers now automatically prevent it from installing or running, I don't know, but you would be well advised not to persist in trying to get it to install.

Are you sure the site is saying you need Java and not Javascript? They are completely different things. Tons more sites require Javascript than Java.
In fact, I do not have Java installed on any of out four Windows 7 computers and I haven't found a site that complains I need it.

Can you post the link so I can test it on our Java free computers?

I may still have Java on my XP partition so I can try that too.

I did as you suggested. Downloaded jre-8u25-windows-x64.exe to my desktop then right clicked to run as administrator. Everything seemed to install properly. I rebooted my PC then tried to verify the install, went to java.com (suppose to be the official site for Java), clicked on "do I have Java", then "verify Java version". I got the following message -

We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser

You know, this is getting very aggravating. Maybe Earthling's advise in his post is the way to go. It is not a big thing to go without the services of that one site telling me it requires Java and if it helps reduce the possibility of future malware problems maybe I should reconsider installing it. Especially since I can't seem to get it installed.

Let's just forget Java and deal with the Start Up CPL settings. I will post the settings in my Start Up CPL in another post so we can be back on target for this thread.

Earthling, see my post to AtlBo below. I appreciate your input and I have reconsidered installing Java.

Thanks, the article you mentioned in your post was an eye-opener.

It's only a risk if you visit sites that are actively trying to exploit Java's weaknesses so, as ever with malware, safe browsing is the keyword. I'm so cautious I actually believe I would have stayed clean for years with no firewall and no AV ;)

I have Java on an XP PC here, but the applet isn't in Control Panel for me to check the settings. Does anyone know if I can set Java to run on a site only if approved? I seem to remember that setting there somewhere. With less Java being used these days, maybe Java enabled this way would be unobtrusive enough to keep for those who frequent a Java enabled site...

Haven't had Java installed for over a year so not sure on this, but don't believe Java can be enabled or disabled on a per site basis. You can enable/disable the plug-in within the browser and if it works the same as the flash plug-in, you can set it to "always ask" in Firefox.
