Hey I have a question about downloading a Trojan or any virus that is listed as something else on a p2p network. What harm could this do? Could it add files to your share folder and make you share your whole compiter to the p2p netowrk or is it unlikely for them to change p2p settings?

It all depends on the malware. Could be a banking Trojan, a bot, etc.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Basically you could get any infection that exists. This includes infections that could steal information from your PC and yes your files could wind up being shared or stolen. In addition, you could totally destroy you OS and need a reinstall. We have seen it many times where people will pick up a PE file infection which corrupts ALL executable files on the PC. And if your PC is on a network with other PC and you have sharing in effect or you simply connect to any other PC, you could spread the infection to that PC too.

How likely is it that malware would change your personal settings on a p2p network like limewire to change share folder settings?

I cannot answer this. New malware comes out all the time and there are literally hundreds of thousands of infections that already exist. All we can tell you is the same thing that every malware removal forum will tell you, and that is P2P programs are dangerous and strongly not recommended.

I haven't used a p2p since 2010. I was just curious how likely a hacker or malware creator would want to change p2p settings to share your files on the p2p network? Or if they would just search your files on the computer. I don't see why they would want to change your p2p settings

    Isn't that scariest enough?

Yes indeed. But I'd rather have just one person had access then the entire world! Ha

But - how would you know this is the case when you allow a file sharing connection to possibly "Mr. I'vegotallthehotestmusictoshare" who doesn't know he's infected/ a scriptkiddie whose fun is infecting pc's/ a cybercriminal syndicate trolling for additional machines to add to their botnet?

So it's likely that malware would change p2p share folder?

It is possible. I'm looking for the article that I read within the hour about malware copying files into a Public shared folder(Pictures) that was then uploaded by the malware.

So would they likely add the whole username folder then or just one folder such as my documents.

Would they add the whole username folder or just a folder such as my documents. Surely I would notice if a huge folder was shared

Like I said in glad I stopped when I did. It seems like they moved my documents to the share folder. Surely they don't move the whole username folder to share. Otherwise I should have noticed if a bunch of files were being shared.
