    HI

Mainstream support is just the support phoneline, MSFT will still issue hotfixes for W7 for a number of years (5yrs) as many corporates and gov depts migrated to W7 from XP, so MSFT will not shoot themselves in the foot and not support them at least with updates.

Personally I wouldn't use 3rd party support as most help is listed on MSFT site for issues, and most tend to use forums like this for tech help than call up a phoneline and wait. Reason I wouldn't use 3rd party support is you are paying for support you cannot guarantee is good, or something that could not just be fixed with a MSFT FixIT for free.

    Natural progression of OS support.

As a gamer that REFUSES to go win 8 since its the bull tablet interface CRAP, this concerns me.

they waited what, 15 years to stop supporting Xp, but they abandond win7 in a few years????

no support for gamers astounds me since gamers are one of the biggest reasons that pc's survive. and thats not opinion, thats FACT.

no support for DX12 in 7 but they tablet-i-cised windows 8.

If they really looked hard at it, if they basically do away with pc gaming and leave it to consoles, you will stagnate the market.

not to be funny but look at the WWE. bought all the competition, shut them down, now no competition, and it sucks.

but yet nobody screams monopoly on "sports entertainment" and they wont scream monopoly on gaming since you have consoles, hand helds and multiple companies doing both, while they actively KILL pc gaming.

i hate microsoft now almost more than i hate EA.

Can boot direct to desktop in Win8.1 so don't need to use/see the Modern GUI

XP was a weird one the life cycle of Windows is back on track now which is new one every 2 yrs, I personally think the hiccup with Longhorn, which was to be what would have been a cross between Win7 + Server 2012 didnt happen for the anti-trust stuff, so with a delay on that we ended up with Vista, then the normal release schedule of 2yrs or so gave us Win7, then same cycle gave us W8 not W10. A 2yrs or so life cycle has been around since DOS days.

The support for XP stayed mainly for business as that lasted a few years longer than consumer support, the hotfixes came for both, mainly as businesses could not jump too quickly from XP > Vista > W7 so many held on till W7 hence the exterded-extended support.

Not had any isses with gaming TBH but I'm not a big gamer these days, do have CoD and BF3/4 on my PC, they run fine.

Fair point and your choice but do you now run Linux over Windows OS?
Time change and at times we dont change with the times, we can get too comfortable with what we are used to, now one of the main sticking points of criticism with new OS's is that they may not work with 4yr+ old Hardware but cest la vie, tech companies dont look back and worst are hardware makers for this, they dump driver support really quickly when new Windows versions come out, mainly so you buy new HW.

Do you use Windows 8 by the way? if you do your going to not love Win10, unless it changes significantly from what the Tech Preview is at present, I know if it stays close to what my test PC is showing me, I wont be going to Win 10 any time soon!

XP simply had to finally go. The days of the 32-bit OS are pretty much over, unless you're running an SSD with less than 4GB of RAM. However it's not likely you'll be running XP on an SSD unless you're aligning a partition to do so. Even then you won't have TRIM, so you can pretty much expect to frag the drive well before the end of it's normal service life.

Vista was a good OS, and one of my machines in the house still ran it until recently. Most of it's black eye was a lack of legacy support as many companies had downsized their development teams and in too many cases there simply were no drivers to be had.

The bottom line is that it was supported for far too long, and the plug needs to be pulled. W7 will be supported until at least January of 2020, and I will be running it until it's support ends unless 10 shows me it's worth it's salt.

Waiting on the 21st for the consumer preview...

    You seem rather hostile.

First of all, how often do you need phone support for Windows 7? That is all that expired and I promise you, that did not continue for 14 years with XP.

Take a look at the support lifecycle:
    http://support2.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?alpha=windows+7

Gamers do not keep PCs alive. That is not a fact. The majority of PCs out there are not suitable for PC gamers. That is not a new trend, just a continuing one.

Not sure why you are complaining anyway. If your sole purpose is PC gaming, what do you care what your OS looks like? You won't be staring at it while gaming. In that you can install a tiny program and make it work just like Windows 7...your stance baffles me further.

The funny thing is, Windows 8.1 runs identical and in some places better than 7 in games. To see a gamer shun it makes me question just how hardcore a gamer they are.

Ignore the Win 10 benchmarks, there are no drivers optimized for it and its still on very early debug builds.

I havent seen a gamer who uses 8 or 8.1 agree with it being better than 7 in any of the games we play.

Been gaming since i was 8. Pc gaming since i can rember. Played 8 years of WoW have over 200 hours in skyrim, fallout 3, fallout nv.

over 650 hours of a game i am helping develop.

funded at least 4 different kickstarters.

have 200 games in my steam library.

have a at least 50 in my GoG library.

belong to a worldwide gaming guild.

own at least 200 boxed copies of a variety of games.

so yeah, i game a little as do my friends.

and i tried my hand at reviewing games at diehardgamefan.com but i couldnt keep up with the schedule and work unfortunately.

and as i stated earlier, none of them who have gone with 8 or 8.1 have yet to proclaim anything close to what you have stated.

so ill stick with who i know for now, thanks.

Just wanted to apologize about coming off hostile, i get a bit reactionary sometimes.

Just for giggles and grins i ran the compatibility updater for 8.1 and found one of the biggest issues that we, as gamers, wont upgrade to 8.1

10 titles listed that i play on a regular basis, that are listed as not compatible.

    among them are

Dead island and dead island epidemic.

    Morrowind and oblivion

    the new duke nukem

    the new wolfenstein.

    the new thief.

XP users said the same when Win Vista and 7 where released, but I do agree with you in that we all become comfortable in the Windows or OS we use and that's not wrong.

Well you beat me there on age as I must have started at 13/14 but then the game of the day was "jet set willy"

Been on technical beta teams with MSFT on Windows since XP so 1000s of hours of development plus future suggestions direct to the team managers. Do stuff for Google and other small developers also as well as in my main job assist in medical software development for next generation automated diagnosis.

    Done that but in medicine.

Nah killing me here, but my get out clause is I dont have the time, but I do have 1800 Albums in my Xbox Music account, and 20k fonts.

Is this down to actually using the OS to game for a few months or a snap decision? only curious as I feel a lot of negativity with Windows versions is down to hearsay, noticed this since XP > Vista days.

Agreed with you here and thats not a bad thing, but you also have to agree that my experience with gaming in a limited way but with higher end games is ok, I have no issues with Win8.1, I have a high PC spec but then gaming needs a high PC spec.

Nah no worries as you are passionate and that's good in tech. Plus this is a good debate, and sorry if I seem as if I'm having a go at you I'm not, just being devils advocate :major

I never believe the compatibility updater, need to install the OS and try the games, I have software and games it says have issues, and they have none.

This is part of the reason i come here is the GOOD debates ;)

i just realized that saying ive been gaming since i was 8 has no relevance unless you know that im 45 years old lol

    I nearly pre-date home computers.....NEARLY. ;)

My first i remember was a Ti-994A. handed down to me from the brother who upgraded. im part of the original dungeons and dragons crowd :cool

That all. I well- predate P.C.'s.and even calculators. I still have my Slide Rule and Logarithm Books, to this day, lol.
Been electronic gaming since about the '70's - Okay P.C.'s, you can say -80's. No. of Games? I have no idea, but well beyond 'hundreds'. I too, rarely play them, anymore. Not that I don't like them, (well, some of them), just lack of time.
The Tech side - more Decades than I care to remember, eh.
Anyway, I agree that Win 7 is probably best for you, if you're gaming, X-64, if you want more than 3.4GB RAM, as well as other speed bonuses, at the cost of some comparability as game Co.s and drivers tend to be underdeveloped in many cases.

In each case, there are those that have it working and those with the typical video card and PC related issues with a spattering of incompatible DRM garbage that is out of Microsoft's control.

absolutely good to know and i can stop spreading misinfomation if thats the case.

and quite frankly over the years ive been here, you have been more than confrontational and rude to more than just me so whatever.

I can admit to being wrong, and even being a jerk some days. Unlike some people.

and ps. when it was first launched, it had huge compatibility issues that apparently have been worked out, thankfully.

    you win, yet again.

That is an interesting stance towards me when you started off with all the hatred and rudeness that has since been shown to be rather unfounded.

But if you wanna consider me rude and confrontational, I guess I can live with that. :)

I believe in finding solutions to my problems instead of putting companies (or individuals, heh) on blast. I guess not everyone else is the same, and I need to learn that.

I don't question that for a moment. It's the notion of running Linux as a primary gaming OS that I find laughable. ;)

As for older games not working on new Operating systems, well, DUH. rolleyes What kind of PC gamer does not know expect that to happen, based on the fact that it has always happened with every new Operating System when it comes out, and plan accordingly?

Everyone who's serious about PC gaming should know that the best way to continue playing your vintage/retro games is to keep the computer and OS you first played them on. If that OS happens to be Windows XP, disconnect the computer from the internet, and keep gaming. Or run a VM.

But using "my old games won't work on the new OS" as an excuse not to upgrade, is ignorant and pointless. Real PC gamers know better than that.

1st "gaming" computer was a timex sinclair 1000. I'm not as old as you blatherbeard, by 4 years, but I typically upgrade to the latest OS, mostly to learn and then help those who need it.

I also game on this computer and fold@home at the same time. Windows 8.1, soon to be 10 when that gets released.

Most of the great things about 8.1 is the fast speed of booting, fast patching, better memory utilization. When 10 comes out, I'll continue using the start screen, cause, imho, I like it better than the clunky start menu.

Besides web games, I play WoW, and World of Tanks at 1600P HP zr30w, soon 4k (as soon as I can find a decent monitor).

so yeah, i had ZERO issues with the upgrade from vista to 7 and can play vintage/retro/current games on my win7 rig with no issues which was NOT the case when win 8 originally came out.

and as a REAL pc gamer,i can see through your arguement as just coming to the defense of someone here longer than me you happen to agree with, which actually hurts me tot he heart since i thought more of you mimzy.

as of this thread im probably done with MG as a whole since ive obviously outgrown my welcome and mods just come to mods defense w o really looking at facts.

sucks really since i used to love coming here to debate facts, not having to succumb to peer pressure and strong arm tactics.

Strong arm tactics? I showed you evidence of games you said did not work. You were not threatened, or wronged in any way. You came into the thread angry and became defensive when people disagreed with you. Wouldn't you rather work with real information instead of going on rumors and incorrect data? I know I would rather have the real deal.

I don't think MG nor its members are your issue. I just don't think you have the temperament to have discussions on forums where people may not agree with you. I know you expected people to jump on the "hate Windows 8" bandwagon, but I wouldn't take it personally when others did not.

Nobody is pushing you out and telling you to leave. These are emotions you invented to combat enemies you clearly don't have.

Everyone is welcome to their opinion here. So respect mine and others and realize it doesn't have to match yours.
