Here's What Happens When You Install the Top 10 of Downloads.com Apps.

Personally I haven't download anything from Download.com in YEARS. I get my needs met by MG or the author of the software I want. The article is a very good read and I feel very sorry for the peeps who download/install from Download dot com.

    Hi OMA

Yeah this is why many here advice not going to that site for downloads, yes a lot of freeware these days may come with bundleware but the apps listed on Majorgeeks are tested and installed before listing, which is why not all applications make it into the list, unlike some sites that will list everything to get a large download list.

Not great to have a large list of junk apps, far rather have a smaller tailored list that has been sourced by geeks for geeks.

If software is listed as bundleware and even if its not, I always run a custom install if offered as you can choose what to install, never really click through an install without reading as at the end of the day, you as the user chose to install, just need to take some time to read the install disclaimers and what add-ons an app may install.

Good old cnet, seems to me Anonymous went after them a while back. Sometimes I will click on a headline link (usually click bait) listed as feedproxy.google on dailyrotation that will send me to one of their sites. If I have java script enabled there is inevitably a popup when I try to close the tab. I then shut down the browser and run CCeaner with CCEnhancer. I just feel so dirty afterward. Used to be a go to site right after the turn of the century, to bad they can't find a better way to make their living.

I can understand authors bundeling 'programs' with their programs but, they must make it very clear how not to install those 'programs'. This is not always the case. And sometimes following the instructions word for word, still results in :crap being installed. CNET goes one better (worse), by bundling on top of the bundling. And then makes claims about it being a download helper/installer!? :crap

The best way to avoid installing :crap , is to stay away from sites like CNET. Fortunately, sites like MajorGeeks, Gizmo's Freeware, Portableapps.com, etc. do exist.

Something else to consider, the crapware isn't always included in the donwloaded setup file but has to be downloaded. I am always disconectted from the internet when installing a program.

FYI CNET is a division of CBS Interactive, which is a division of CBS Corporation... ;)
