Thank you for trying, but that didn't work either.

    Hi

Dont know if this will work as I cannot re-create this also in Win 8.1 and IE11, you are using the desktop version and not the Modern UI version just check

    Open IE11 desktop version
Click on the Tools "cog" *top-right* then choose Internet Options
    Click on Programs tab
Tick the box labeled Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop.
From the dropdown box there, select Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop.
    Click OK.

Using the desktop version go here http://www.iegallery.com/PinnedSites and click add-ons and choose Google Search and then close IE and go back to the Manage Addons in IE and make sure Google is in the list and make it default.

I just logged in here to say that I have got rid of Bing, and Google is now the search provider in all new tabs on IE11.

I have re-installed Windows 8.1, used JV16 Power Tools "Decrap my computer" to remove most of the astonishing amount of unwanted crap installed by HP. Then removed a few which remained.

It's taking a long time to get the basic system to a state which satisfies me, and has entailed running up and down stairs with a USB stick in my hand .... don't ask.

Classic Shell has helped. But I still couldn't get rid of Bing until I came across this after searching the net: http://classroom.synonym.com/changing-internet-explorer-default-bing-google-16432.html

I had saved my Favourites (Microsoft has finally discovered how to spell it) and my RoboForm data, so that has saved a lot of misery.

It now remains to install my applications.

One thing I noticed with Win 8 is that after a right click on the desktop there is a delay of 4 seconds before the menu appears. Is that normal? (It was instant in XP)

It's something you've done, maybe during cleanup. It should be instantaneous. Is this the only click that is misbehaving?

Yes. I've not experiencing it elsewhere.

    Hi

Very likely a 3rd party Context Menu option, most 3rd party apps install then for times you right click and the options like Scan PC with X anti-virus app, etc.

One option as I know you have CCleaner installed is to open CCLeaner click Tools > Startup > Context Menu tab and disable all of them, then reboot and test.

Is your right click ok now?

If not then may need to delve deeper and this app ShellExView is good, open and then click the type column so all the Context Menu listings are at the top and then disable all non-Microsoft ones, again reboot and test.

Let us know how you get on

No difference. I have just downloaded ShellExView and will report findings a little later.

    Getting somewhere now .....

There were 5 non-Microsoft items in the context menu list and they have been disabled.

I no longer have the 4 second delay.

I suppose the next thing is to enable them one at a time until the delay re-appears.

    Is that correct?

Yep, that is what I'd do. ;)

All but one of the non-Microsoft items have are now enabled again.

The offending entry belongs to Intel. These are its details:

    Extension name: TheDeskTopContextMenu Class
    Description: igfxDTCM Module
    Version: 6.15.10.3621
    company: Intel(R) common User Interface

With only this one disabled, the 4 second delay is not present.

(There is one more Intel item, TheAdvOSPPage Class, igfxOSP Module. Disabling this and enabling the other Intel one doesn't cure the problem.)

I have no idea what the disabled extension does. What are the implications of leaving it disabled?

You can disable any context menu items you have no use for. It has no effect on the system.

Have you thought about just setting your home page to www.google.com?

Hi your doing great so far with Win 8

I Disable the intel thing as it will cause no issue, as most of the startups or context menu items you can just get via Control Panel or the apps full EXE.

I disable everything from startup apart from AV or a backup app that has a schedule, so I have 4 startups only.

I had done that, but I still wanted to Bing because I, not Microsoft, decide what is installed on my machine.
After reading countless other suggestions, I removed it with the advice at this link http://classroom.synonym.com/changing-internet-explorer-default-bing-google-16432.html
I don't understand the context menu, so I have to be guided by the expertise I find here.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and tried to help.
