When I try to rename some photos I always got a message that file name is too long. How to fix this I checked all my hard disks and found no errors. I am waiting for feedback and reply.

Is there any software that could solve my problem?

Unfortunately I don't have experience with such software. You should have a look at different file managers. Here's a review of free file managers.

    http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-file-manager.htm

Also have a look at XYplorer Free.

    http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php

And have a look at this Microsoft Article. Scroll down to Maximum Path Length Limitation. It might be a solution.

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/aa365247(v=vs.85).aspx

Lastly, consider renaming the sub-folders with shorter names.

What is the full path to the file where the photos are located?

You need to move the path closer to C.

Unfortunately images long file names could not be renamed or moved is there any utility to do that

Can't you move the images off the computer and onto an sd card or a USB stick?

Then create a folder under C and move them back.

You can't fix an error with filename too long because the pictures are in a folder whose path is longer than 256 characters. Because the solution would be to move or rename which you can't do.

You also failed to supply the full path to the folder where the folders are located, which I asked for several posts above.

Let's hope you have the photos stored off the computer at a 2nd location on a card, CD, DVD or external hard drive because the solution is to delete them from the computer and then store them in a new location closer to C so the path is less than 256 characters.

Yes. But as long as you ignore plodr's request to provide the path where your images are stored we are not able to advice you.

If you're having problems obtaining the path, try this, using the Windows Explorer File Manager:
    • Navigate to one of the files you're trying to rename/copy/move.
    • Hold the [Shift] key down and right-click on the file.
    • Select "Copy as path" from the context menu.
The path is now in the clipboard and can be pasted(Ctrl+V) in to a document or a thread post.

When pasted, it will look something like this:

    "C:\Users\username\Pictures\subfolder_name_1\subfolder_name_2\subfolder_name_3\etc_on_and_on\until_finaly\filename.ext"

The jpg images path are on a different partition not the one of installed windows

It doesn't matter if they are in E, F, Q, S or any other lettered partition.
    Please post the full path.
If that isn't done, I will no longer waste time posting in this thread.

I will spend a few minutes. I've ran into this issue a few times, moving files from one server to another. We are in a transition of moving users from 2008r2 to 2012r2 (/w data dedupe [a feature that everyone should use]) and I've ran into this issue quite a bit. There is a kinda easy fix for it. For example:

h:\home\username\blah\blah\blah\blah\blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh\blah\123456 (etc). Now, can't copy 123456 cause it is to long. Well, just rename blah

So, change the above to h:\home\username\blah\blah\blah\blah\blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh\a\123456
    Then to: h:\home\username\blah\blah\blah\blah\a\a\123456
    Then to: h:\home\username\blah\blah\blah\a\a\a\123456

Eventually, you will be able to rename 123456 or to copy it somewhere else. Btw this affects all windows based computers from xp-8.1.

This path isn't long enough to cause the failure that you mentioned. Either you're trying to fool us, or something is apperently going wrong with your partition.

How long are the individual file names?

Thank you. That long filename is the problem. I have downloaded XYplorerFree and will see if it can solve the issue. I suggest you do the same. Hopefully one of the other members have an easier solution.

Is XYplorerFree a replacement to windows explorer?

  26. plastidust

    plastidust Command Sergeant Major

Not a replacement. XYplorerFree is an alternative file manager to the Windows Explorer file manager as are these:
I can't say that either xplorer² or Q-Dir are any better or worse than XYplorerFree since I haven't used XYplorer in years.
I have my doubts that any of them can overcome that "Source Path to long" issue, but that is what Eldon is checking on now with XYplorerFree.

At any rate, you can try any of them, you will still have the Windows Explorer file manager. None of them are going to literally replace Windows Explorer.

No offense. The reason for my skepticism is that (out of my experiences and current tests under Win7) you should always be able to shorten the file names (even too long names) except the path is already as long that a name of only one character would exceed the length limit. But the latter is not the case here.

That was the first reason why I'm thinking that anything is going wrong with your drive or partition. The second reason is that
    F:\(I) Others\NEW PHOTOS\CHIFO PICTURES\INTERNET PICTURES\safe_image.php_d=AQBC8ii0kvRhdOtR&w=103&h=103&url=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-profile-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhprofile-ak-xpf1%2Fv%2Ft1.0-1%2Fc25.25.314.314%2Fs200x200%2F971620_536658016383648_1258322977_n.jpg
(which is the whole path of your file) has a total length of only 252 characters. The limit is not even reached.

Lets hope one of the already proposed file managers will work for you.

Problem. Windows 7 is not allowing me to create a path longer than 259 characters. All I can suggest is try the free program XYplorerFree.

    OK, we are getting closer.
Something you can try is associating the path with a drive letter using a Batch file.
    - type notepad into the search box, hit Enter and wait until the Notepad Editor opens up.
    - copy the following code into the Editor window:
    Code:
    @echo off &setlocal
    set "directory=F:\(I) Others\NEW PHOTOS\CHIFO PICTURES\INTERNET PICTURES\Portraits 13"

    for /f "delims=: " %%i in ('subst') do (
      subst %%i: /D
      exit /b
    )

    setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
    set "letter=ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
    for /f "delims=: " %%i in ('"mountvol|findstr \^<[A-Z]:\\\^>"') do set "letter=!letter:%%i=!"
    endlocal &set "letter=%letter:~-1%"

    subst %letter%: "%directory%"
    explorer.exe /n,/e,%letter%:\

Now do the following to save the file:
    - Menu "File"
    - "Save As" (the Save As dialogue box opens)
    - Navigate to the folder where you want to save the Batch script
    - make sure you selected these settings:
    Encoding: ANSI
Save As Type: All Files [*.*]
    - Write drive.bat into the File Name box
    - Click on "Save"

Double click onto drive.bat. The associated drive will open up in a new Explorer window. Now try to shorten your JPG file name(s).
The second time you double click the Batch file the virtual drive will be deleted and you should be able to access your JPG in a normal way.

Why does the image file have a website url in its name?

Hi do you have the actual website url you were grabbing these images off as likely the "save images" app is not grabbing the image off the site? as I think even if you could rename them the image is not the actual image but likely its location.

Personally I would try going to the site and right click the image and choose Save Image As and see how that goes.

  38. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

Well I can tell from the names of the files that you have not properly saved them because it still links back to a website. That's the reason you are having all these problems.
    This
gives measurements of depth, width and height which never appear in the name of an image.

Your right click an image, select "save as" and give it a simple name.
