    Hi,

I have started a new thread to add a bit more clarity to my error (Windows 8):

Pop ups and new pages opening in IE and Firefox every time I click anywhere on a web page
After re-booting, pop ups seem to come up without even opening a browser
Unable to go back to a restore point
Unable to do a system refresh
Unable to do a clean reinstall
USB drives are recognised , but the drive doesn't appear anywhere for me to open

    Thanks all!

Also, when I search on Firefox (for example), I have to scroll down about half a page to get past all the ads before I get to what I searched for.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    PepperZip 2.0
    SpeedChecker
    Super Optimizer v3.2

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: aPpsiave - {dbb705cd-5ab7-49bc-a298-b01caa355837} - C:\Program Files (x86)\aPpsiave\RHhGZ8yPVPbxLc.dll
    O2 - BHO: nicenfrreee - {f5498f3d-7da3-45c7-8fc0-05d222661eb3} - C:\Program Files (x86)\nicenfrreee\vtDNiZxrhJjDpX.dll
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Super Optimizer] C:\Program Files (x86)\Super Optimizer\SupOptLauncher.exe
    O4 - Startup: superoptimizersetup.lnk = C:\ProgramData\{2b16e489-3aa7-374a-2b16-6e4893aa9224}\superoptimizersetup.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Speedchecker
'There was an error when uninstalling this program, it may have already been removed'
So I removed it from the 'Program' list
04 - HKCU [Super Optimizer] wasn't there, maybe this went when I uninstalled Super Optimizer?

First time I ran OTM it looked like it got through most/all of it, but then 'stopped responding' – forced it to exit and created the attached log file (215539).
Tried it a second time, identical outcome, log file (221035)
Had to do a manual reboot.

Using Firefox and still getting pop ups and new pages opening every time I click on a web page. Typing is delayed.

I just fixed a typo in the OTM fix, please try it again.

Note: GetUnKey.txt is not the log I requested. The log from MGtools is always MGlogs.zip

After trying OTM again, if it runs properly, rerun the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat program and attach the new OTM and new MGlogs.zip file.

OTM freezes in the same place - it looks like it freezes after it has run the 'SimplyTech' HK_USER - the last but one command.

The GetLogs.bat cmd window doesn't close automatically, but does create the zip.

Chrome (Dregol?) browser appears to be very stable, Firefox and IE appear to be the problem ones.

Thank you again for this help.

It is not supposed to close automatically. It reports to you any problems and also tells you were the log is if created. And then it tells you to hit a key to continue. This was covered in the instructions: Using MGtools

Please run a new scan with Hitman Pro and attach the new log. I want to see how much of what it previously reported has been fixed.

Looks like you missed fixing the below two lines with HIjackThis ( analyse.exe ) or they came back. Please try again:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Super Optimizer] C:\Program Files (x86)\Super Optimizer\SupOptLauncher.exe
    O4 - Startup: superoptimizersetup.lnk = C:\ProgramData\{2b16e489-3aa7-374a-2b16-6e4893aa9224}\superoptimizersetup.exe

04-HKCU-SuperOptimizer & 04-Startup-Superoptimizer are not appearing in HijackThis.

When I tried to un-install 'Superoptimizer' from the Program list as one of the first steps I did, the message was something like:

'There is a problem, SuperOptimzer may have already been removed, would you like to delete anyway'

    So I deleted it.

Okay! I see that your last log from MGtools did not update completely. Either you collected the log too soon or there must have been an error running GetLogs.bat.

Run Hitman Pro again and this time allow it to fix all the Potential Unwanted Programs it reports. Then immediately reboot and then run a new scan. Attach the new log. Hopefully it is clean this time.

Also tell me how things are working at this point!

  10. Jumper

So you want me to run Hitman Pro, then how do I fix all that it reports - is that with HijackThis? Hitman Pro won't allow me to do this.

Then reboot and run another Hitman Pro log?

OK, hadn't realised I could activate a trial licence, will upload results shortly.

GetLogs.bat ran fully this time (for the first time - not sure if I cut it off ealry myself previously, or it just froze).

I see that you are now using MSconfig to control startup which you should not be doing for two reasons!

    1. You are not supposed to be changing anything on your PC right now while we are helping you. We requested this in the READ & RUN ME FIRST in the early part of the instructions! Basically if we do not ask you to do something don't do it. ;) We need to manage everything going on with your PC to avoid confusion and possibly introduction of other problems.
    2. MSconfig is not meant to be a startup manager and using it this way cause problems. See this for why >> Dealing with Startup Processes
But do not make any changes to MSconfig yet because we have to fix somethings first. So please just follow the instructions below.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
    • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
    • Attach the logfile to your next next reply.
    • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

    Delete the below two folders
    C:\ProgramData\6079a74400007305
    C:\ProgramData\cheap-o

Now run MSconfig and select Normal Startup mode and then OK your way out of MSconfig and then reboot your PC.

After reboot uninstall McAfee Security Scan Plus and anything else you may have installed from McAfee. The reboot again.

Rerun the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat program and attach the new MGlogs.zip file and don't forget to attach the log from AdwCleaner.

Hi, if the MSConfig problem is in regards to 'Safe Mode', I did this following instructions from somewhere else to try and get my USB to work before I logged on to MajorGeeks.
I certainly haven't done anything outside of this thread (I wouldn't know how)! :-o

Logs attached, I didn't 'fix' anything with AdwCleaner, just manually deleted the two folders you requested.

We have some more items from McAfee to remove from MSconfig with another registry patch.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme2.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run AdwCleaner again and this time it is okay to have it fix everything it is finding.

Make sure you double check MSconfig again now to be sure it is set for normal startup mode. Then reboot now !

After reboot, run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  16. Jumper

    Jumper Private E-2

    Fixme2.reg worked fine.
AdwCleaner - gave the option to 'Clean' or 'Un-install', I chose 'Clean'.
After it rebooted I opened MSConfig, and 'Safe Mode' was NOT checked.

IE & Dregol appear very stable, lots of pop-ups/ads/pages opening in Firefox.

USB stick is not being recognised at all.

    Logs attached.

This is confusing! Is IE working okay or does it have a problem. Using words like "very stable" should be preserved for when all is good so I'm not sure what you mean with IE. If IE is not working properly then run the below:

Reset Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11 to Defaults

For Firefox problems, run the below:

    Reset Firefox to Defaults

The problem with your USB ports will have to be discussed in the Software Forum.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
NOTE: In the above, before the last step we would normally have you toggle System Restore off and then back on to remove infected restore points but I'm not having you do this yet. It is possible that some one may want to try fixing your USB port issue using an old restore point. If this is suggested, you may also wind up back here to remove infections again. But if you do not use System Restore and you get your USB ports working, you should then toggle System Restore. The below explains how.
    1. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • For Windows 8 and 8.1 system restore see this link: Win 8 System Restore - How to enable/disable
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

Due to what appeared to be an irreparable problem with my USB ports, I had to do a complete re-install (only possible by first having cleared all the malware).

My fresh install now has MacAfee back on it.

Would you recommend removing this and going through the 'Malware Protection' thread (just thinking about previous in the thread when all MacAfee stuff was deleted)?
