    Hello Major Geeks,

I am here again with another problem.

    XP Pro - 32 bit - Dell workstation -

I have seen this before. When opening Skype this error message pops up when I attach my Logitech webcam by usb:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.

The driver device got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check your hardware device vendor for updates.

    Technical Info: ***Stop:0x000000EA (0X8A17B520, 0X8A02068, 0XBA4EBCBC, 0X00000001)

    Nv4_disp

Beginning dump of physical memory dump complete.

Contact your system administrator or technical support for further assistance.

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Eldon,
Thank you for your assistance. However..when following the instructions I had to revert to #1 as I could not find current nv4_disp.dll. I deleted the NVIDIA drivers in my control panel. Then tried to install new drivers from the NVIDIA site and there is not one that is compatible...msg: "the graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware". With that, I tried a system restore to reinstate the former. Unfortunately somewhere down the line a check mark was next to "Turn off System Restore". Is there another option here? Please advise. TY Nancy

Generally drivers are best gotten from the manufacturer's site. I suspect that you don't have a removable card but rather a graphics chip on the motherboard.
Chipset drivers would be the thing you need.

Since you only said it is a Dell, I can't point you to the drivers for a workstation.

Ok...now that I have followed the original instructions from Eldon...I am without the drivers that I need and am working in Safe Mode. Is there another option to REstore my system to an earlier date other than System Restore as this is not viable at the moment.

I reinstalled NVIDIA Drivers from the Dell website. Hopefully this will cure my problem.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello again,
It seems that all was fine for a few weeks, now I am back where I started from.
After installing the most recent drivers for NVIDIA I am still receiving this error msg.
I also tried to run "Diagnostics" from the Dell website. That also shut me down with this msg quickly.

What is the model of your Dell Workstation? Also, does it have onboard graphics or a graphics card?

Dell Precision 390....According to the specs on the Dell Website it has a range of 2D to 3D OpenGL graphics cards.

I found drivers for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 550 on NVIDIA's website. Check that the details are correct and click the green search button. Download and install.

BTW Does the problem occur only when you plug-in the USB webcam?

Yes, now that you mention it...About a minute after I launch Sype through my webcam which was connected to the USB port in the front of my computer, my screen flashes black & freezes then goes blue with the error msg re: nv4_disp. The same thing happens when I connect my iPhone to either one of the USB front ports. I disconnected all from those ports.

I downloaded & installed the correct Quadro FX550 drivers as instructed and restarted my computer. A NVIDIA icon appeared in the right side of my taskbar. (not sure if that's the correct term) The screen flashed when I clicked or right clicked on it.

Are there any other suggestions aside from replacing the graphics card? I am not sure I can do that without help.

    Thank you in advance.

PS...One of the reasons I hesitate to upgrade my OS to Windows 7 or higher is that I have Adobe software that is about 10 years old and I don't think they are compatible with the higher OS systems. Right now upgrading those programs is unaffordable. Can I use some sort of "trick" if you will, that will allow me to upgrade my OS system and still operate my art programs...basically photoshop 6 & illustrator 9?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you

In your original post you mentioned the Logitech webcam and Skype. Logitech devices might no longer be the best, but they are still good products. And although I'm no iSheep, Apple products are good. But, it doesn't mean the problem is with the graphics card. And this info doesn't help you at all.

    Questions:
    1. Do you have all the Service Packs for Windows XP installed? They are not cumulative. You have to install either SP1 & SP3, or SP2 & SP3.
    2. Do you have DirectX June 2010 installed? It's an update for Windows XP, Vista and 7.

This is the redistributable . Save it for future use.

PS I'm online and will get back to you on the Adobe programs.

    Eldon,
I have Service Pk 3...I was unable to install Pk 2 as I received a msg saying that I already have the latest version.
I did download DirectX...I was directed to save the extracted files to a specific location - Program File - Microsoft folder so I can find it easily.

I looked at the system requirements for Adobe Photoshop 6 & Illustrator 9. They are more than 10 years old and run in Windows 98, ME, NT & 2000. I'm not suprised that they run in Windows XP, but I doubt they'll run in Windows 7. You could nicely ask a friend with a Windows 7 PC if you can install the 2 programs on their computer. Because they are old they will not make any major changes to the system and you can uninstall them using the portable version of Revo Uninstaller that you can run from a flash drive.

But, we haven't sorted out your graphics problem. You should seriously consider upgrading your OS to at least Windows 7 SP1. Currently you are running an OS and 2 programs that are more than 10 years old. Hypothetically, if you have to replace the motherboard, the new will probably not support Windows XP, meaning you will have to pay for a new OS and motherboard.

The later versions of Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator are expensive. There are free alternatives that are better because yours are really old. Ask on MajorGeeks - you might be pleasantly suprised. I suggest you start a new thread.

SP3 includes SP2 as per my post. You need to install DirectX. Open the folder to where you extracted the files and look for the setup file. After the installation restart the PC.

You should be able to run those programs in Win 7 by right clicking them and choosing "Run in compatibility mode". But, if not. there are freeware alternatives — for instance for Photoshop, there's Gimpshop.

    Eldon,

If I have to, and it seems that I might, I have an external hard drive running XP with my Adobe programs on it. I can use that one just for my artwork. I have tried using them on a comp with Windows 7...they work somewhat but it's complicated and not sure it's the best idea. Thank you for looking into that for me. I will also start a new thread for additional info on free alternatives.

Will upgrading to Windows 7 or later help with the graphic issue? Is the Microsoft website the best way to do that or is there another way that might be lest expensive? Where is the best place to buy a new graphics card if need be. I have done some research via Google but the price ranges are so far apart in some. Also, if I had to replace the mother board, I will bite the bullet and buy a new computer, most likely a lap top. There are lots of deals out there but I would check with you guys first before I buy anything since anyone I have ever communicated with have been a major help.

    Thanks again.

    Nancy

Nancy, I think the problem is with Windows XP. I use Windows XP on a second partition and I don't have any problems. However, I don't have a graphics card, and I don't connect my smartphone or mobile modem.

I checked Dell's website and your PC supports Windows 7. If you decide to replace the OS (you should), ensure you get Windows 7 SP1. In a few months Microsoft will release Windows 10. You don't have to, but you will have a year to upgrade for free. And you will receive free updates until the end of support.

If you want to replace the motherboard or graphics card, visit Newegg*. And don't stop there, shop around, it's free.

    * You can sign up for their news letter and will be notified of special deals.

PS You don't need to replace your PC. And unless you are doing some other work, you don't need a high-end graphics card for Adobe Photoshop 6 & Illustrator 9. However, the card you are using has just 128 MB. You have to decide - new Windows, or new graphics card.

Eldon, I would not tell someone running a 2006 computer designed for XP to upgrade to Win 10, even if it is free. Win 7 perhaps but not 10 on that old hardware.

I have two desktop computers in the house running Win 7, that were designed for XP and I have no intention of attempting to run Win 10 on them.
Now the two netbooks that came with Win 7 and Win 7 with SP1, those I might attempt because the hardware is newer.

plodr, with all due respect, I did not tell anybody to upgrade a 2006 PC to Windows 10. I merely mentioned the options when running Windows 7 SP1. And the hardware can be upgraded.

You know I respect your knowledge... Don't make an :*** of yourself.

My 2005 32-bit Dell Precision M70 does just fine with Win 10. What I don't like about Win 10 is that the High Contrast interface isn't fully implemented in Win 10 yet. Perhaps by the time it's released...

Thank you everyone for your great assistance. When I decided to finally purchase a new graphics card, I opened up my CPU to make sure that I buy the exact card already installed in my system. As it turns out, the card was loose and my system is now working great. Hopefully for a long time to come. I do, however, plan to upgrade to Window 7 or 8 as my systems is capable.

Again, thank you. As always I am grateful for your knowledge.
