Saving Word Documents

I need help with a function in Word. On all my PCs if I go to save a Word document it automatically names it with the first word or first few words in the document. I’ve just put Word on a new PC. It’s automatically choosing to save documents with the name ‘Document1’. I’ve had a good look at Word’s options but I can’t find what I’m looking for. How do I set an option in Word so that it names the document with the first word/s in the document?

    Did you try "save as..."function?

Thank you for the recommendation. Unfortunately, it doesn't resolve this issue.

As an example, I've just created a Microsoft Word document and headed it "Exercise 1". I then went to save it using the "Save as ..." function. As you can see in the attached image*, Microsoft is trying to save this as "Document1" rather than "Exercise 1".

*In zip format because a jpg was too large too attach.

Which version of Word, and is it the same version on all systems?

    2007.

    Yes.

I'm as mystified as you Mark. If I try to save before adding any text at all it is Doc1.doc or Doc1.docx. If I add text first then the text replaces Doc1. Document1 is the name on the title bar until it gets saved under some other name, but it never tries to save it as Document1. :confused

If there is an option to change this then I certainly can't find it.

Just noticed something. Your pic shows Save as 'Word Document', but mine says 'Word Document (*.docx)'. Check your default save format.

    It is mystifying.

That makes two of us :confused

I have a range of options, such as saving it in earlier versions of Word. None of the options include the file extension in parentheses.

I'm using Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2007. While mine shows the first line in the document as the filename, I cannot find a setting/option to change this. Also, using *.docx as the default save format shows Word Document, and *.doc shows Word 97-2003 Document.

    Try this:
Click the Orb > Word Options > Resources > run Microsoft Office Diagnostics. It's worth a try.

    Dear Eldon

Thank you! I have run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics. It reported there were no problems and that everything was OK.

Mine is Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student (retail). I have it installed onto two other PCs one an acer laptop with Windows Vista and the other an HP desktop with Windows 7. I do not have this issue with the same Office package on these two machines. It's bizarre. I thought there must be some option I've not selected. Prior to seeking help here I did a thorough search of the software's options and the Internet. As far as I recall it happens automatically on other machines and I've never had to choose this option. Unless someone else has had this problem and knows the solution it would appear I'm going to have to live with it. It doesn't, of course, cause a major problem.

It's not possible to contact Microsoft directly for help is it? Unless, one is prepared to take out another mortgage anyway.

This may be classed as clutching at straws. I've just looked at the Windows Updates offered on the affected machine. It wants to download updates for Microsoft Office 2010. When I saw this I thought my version of Office is 2007 so why does it want to update 2010?

Then I recall there is something that came with this laptop. Its the ability to select a free trial of Office 2010. I'd assumed that Office 2010 isn't actually on the machine. I thought it was just a link to try that version free until the trial expired.

I now believe that if Windows Updates wants to update it that it must be on my PC. I'm going to get rid of Office 2010 and see if that resolves the issue. Prior to taking those steps, I'd like to ask you experts two questions:

    1. Would PC De-crapifier be the best software to get rid of Office 2010, as I believe its bloatware the manufacturer put on the machine? If not, what would you recommend?

    2. Once Office 2010 has gone, would it be useful to uninstall Office 2007 and do a new install? I'm happy to do that but if it's not going to solve anything it's a little time saved if I don't need to do it.

Ah, right! I shall install them. Thanks!

Does the license agreement for that version of Office allow installing on up to 3 computers? Just wondering whether this last installation is legitimate in the eyes of Microsoft and, if not, whether that would cause abnormal behavior.

Also, has your Office 2007 been updated to SP3 (Service Pack 3)?

We have three Office 2007 systems here and not one has been offered 2010 updates so I think you do have it installed. Have you checked Programs and Features in Control Panel? If it's there then uninstall it, though you may also need to repair 2007 afterwards.

I don't know so I'll have to check the agreement. I would either Microsoft or the software know?

I don't know I will need to check. Windows Update hasn't offered me SP3.

No, it isn't there. It solely lists Office 2007. I don't understand then why I've been offered Office 2010 updates.

Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student can be installed on up to 3 PCs in the same household. You're OK on that point. Has the original issue been fixed? If not, I will do a 'repair' which is like a re-install.

PS Ignore those MSO 2010 updates. If you uninstalled the trial of MSO 2010, they shouldn't reappear.

To check, click the Office orb at the upper left corner of Word, click the Word Options button at the bottom of list that appears, click Resources in the left column, and look at the text under "about Microsoft Word 2007" or click the About button. The info should show SP3.

Thank you, that's good to know.

    No, unfortunately the issue persists.

    I shall check they don't.

    Thank you!

Thank you for that. I didn't know where to start checking. I do have SP3.
