I have tried and tried to boot up, but no go, no matter what I did. Like cntl + alt + del, F8 tapping, no option worked from that menu. I need your expert help. Please advise me...

    Thank you

Please help me, if possible. Here’s more details, if you need them. At start up it has a black menu screen with 2 choices. One, start windows normally and the other is launch startup repair. In both cases, it gets to a point and no further.

Such as: Start normally, goes to black screen with the words starting windows, for about 15 minutes, then it goes to the blue screen and starts the pop up, recovery and utility, saying preparing now, please wait for a while. Then after about 10 minutes of that, it goes away and stays stuck on the fancy blue Fujitsu screen indefinably.

The second option is: Launch startup repair. It says loading, then blue screen and the same as above.
Recovery and utility, saying preparing now, please wait for a while. Then after about 10 minutes of that, it goes away and stays stuck on the fancy blue Fujitsu screen indefinably.

I'm moving this to the Software Forum because it does not really sound like malware.

This has all the classic signs of a failing hard drive.

How old is the machine, and is it the original hard drive?

Ok thank you, I had just read that if I can get into the computer, i could do a restore to an older time :0(

Thank you for moving me to the right place :0)

About 3 or 4 years old. I hope its some issue that can be fixed though :0)

    Thank you for your input.

Looking at the symptoms you describe, and the rough age of the machine I am definitely leaning towards hard drive. I have also seen malware corrupt Windows and not allow a machine to boot as well.

What you can do to eliminate malware as an issue, since you can't boot Windows, is use another machine to burn a Kaspersky Rescue Disk:

    http://support.kaspersky.com/4162

By clicking on the green link ("Kaspesky Rescue Disk 10), you can download the file and use a free program like ImgBurn to create a CD-ROM from the downloaded file. When you do boot the disk, the machine MUST be connected to the internet. Either hard wired (preferred), or wirelessly once the KRD desktop has loaded. This is a Linux based OS, and will boot directly from a disc.

I know this must seem a bit daunting, but if it's malware this could help.

Thank you so much, yes I wanted to try and see if the malware is the issue first. because I know it can prevent you from booting up at all. At least if it's the hard drive, I can eliminate the malware idea first. Is there anyway to get my info off the hard drive if it went bad?

    Well thank you again,
    Deb, wildflowergal

The rescue disk can help you get your data. The file folders will be shown under C: on the KRD desktop.
The instructional pertaining to KRD starts at about 1:00 into the video.

    Here is a vid tutorial:

    Hello again,

I have the rescue file on my jump drive now. When I downloaded it, there were 2 files the guy said to download. But only the one went on my drive, the main iso one. I haven't tried it yet :0) I'm nervous... but I'm going to do it in a little bit, while watching the video you sent me.

I had one more issue with a laptop I had to make a desk top (broken screen) after this all happened and use the cd drive to make a copy. I find there are many people having the same issue out there with their cd/dvd drive not showing up in the device manager or explorer at all and not turning on, yet spinning. Even after they have replaced them. I have taken it out and pushed back in, no results. It's like there's no drivers, or something is preventing it from registering on the computer. Do you know anything that might work?

Just let me know if I should start a new thread, or not, ok? Or you have some awesome fix :0)

    Thank you, Deborah

If you're going to use a flash drive, you need to make it bootable. Disc files, or .iso files are meant to be burned to a CD-ROM (in this case) or for larger .iso images a DVD-ROM.

If you are using a flash drive, you need to follow these instructions:

    http://support.kaspersky.com/8092

As far as the drive issue, if it fails to recognize a new drive I'd have to lean towards issues with the motherboard. Even if there are no drivers installed, you should still see the drive in "Device Manager" with a yellow exclamation point next to it...

Ok then, there were lots of people on forums that had the same experience with the cd/dvd not showing up. If I find a solution, i will share it. So that's the reason for doing the usb instead. Thank you again.

Well, it's done and guess what? No sign of a C drive anywhere. guess I do need a new hard drive. It doesn't seem like there's any way to recover any of my documents and photos, unless you know another way. Just 4 files came up after the Kaspersky scan. sda1, 2 & 3 and sdb1 that had some weird other files and other files in those files, not familiar wording or names, and I have no idea what those are except maybe left over ruins of my poor hard drive :0(

Once I have a new hard drive, how do I get windows back on it, yikes! Fujitsu didn't provide a restore disc, so I guess I'm on my own? Ho hum....

Thank you for being so sweet and getting me to this point, I really appreciated your help. :)

sda 1, 2 and 3 are the three partitions on your C drive. Linux doesn't call it C; that is a Windows term. sdb is a 2nd hard drive.

If you remove the hard drive from your laptop, and attach it by USB to a working computer, you can, in most cases get your files off.

Had an old Fujitsu once and had the same problem. Could not install stock windows. Their startup screen address is different. Could not install stock windows. Had to get fujitsu's version of windows
Fujitsu is propriatory. They want all the money..

Oh my, that's totally awesome, thank you so much. How to I plug it into another computer? It's a smaller than usual hd, I noticed. I do have a 16 gb usb jump drive though, can I use that? Like just drag over the folders? there's only 4.

Oh wow, sorry I just saw your post :0) thats good to know. I believe mine is around 2010 or 11. If I get a new hd, what should I do. I don't have any windows programs yet.

  18. wildflowergal

    wildflowergal Private E-2

I'm not sure how to copy them over to the 16GB Jump drive. Do you know? I can only open the Kaspersky window after scan and see the files setting there.

Sorry, my bad about not mentioning sda folders. Lots of work on the brain.

You can copy files directly from the sda folders to a jump drive.

Ok, however there's no way to get the files off the computer to the jump drive. Like I can't right click or save as or nothing that I can see on that Kaspersky desktop screen. Nor do I find a copy and paste action. Remember I booted into hd using Kaspersky through a usb successfully. Sorry it's been so long in sending this comment :-o

The only way i can boot up is through the Kaspersky rescue disk, because the hd failed. Once Im in there, is there a way to get to my memory stick, or save files? I couldn't find a way to do it.

No. A Kaspersky rescue disk is to clean off malware. Your problem is a failed hard drive not a malware infested Windows install.

Not true. If you created a Kaspersky rescue stick, you can boot from a live linux USB stick. If you created a Kaspersky rescue CD/DVD, you can create a linux live rescue DVD.

If you don't want to do that, then this is your next option: You remove the hd from the laptop and attach it to a working computer by a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. If the computer you booted up sees the laptop hard drive, then you can copy files from the laptop hard drive to the working computer.

The final option is to send the hard drive off to a rescue company and pay $$$$ to have them get the files off the failed hard drive.

When you boot to the Kaspersky Rescue disk, does Kaspersky see your hard drive?

Sorry if I am off about this, but I took a look at the CD/DVD Kaspersky rescue app one time, and I believe it has a function for you to move your files off the drive if I remember correctly...

  25. wildflowergal

Yes, it sees it, however it is weird looking files. Like here's what I wrote earlier, Just 4 files came up after the Kaspersky scan, such as: sda1, 2 & 3 and sdb1 and now there's a 5th one sdbc, that had some weird other files and other files in those files, not familiar wording or names, and I have no idea what those are except maybe left over ruins of my poor hard drive :0(

Then I was told by admin, that these were: sda 1, 2 and 3 are the three partitions on your C drive. Linux doesn't call it C; that is a Windows term. sdb is a 2nd hard drive.
If you remove the hard drive from your laptop, and attach it by USB to a working computer, you can, in most cases get your files off.

I did take it to Best buy geek squad after that and the told me it was toast and would have to be sent out to the special people to retrieve any files. level 1 is $250 - 500, level 2 is 500 to $1000, and level 3 is $1000 to 5000. Yikes! I could never afford even the low one :0(

I still believe there may be hope to retrieve my family photos, business website content and photos, I hope. At least 7000 photos and client contracts & info files. Well I hope there is hope for that. In the mean time, I bought a hd drive for $60, good deal 1000GB, that's compatible with my Fujitsu A1220 notebook. Just no OS software yet. low on $$$

Any guidance would be much appreciated on both issues. Getting OS, and saving some files from my old hd.

Thanks for the info. Does your PC have a Windows sticker on the PC someplace? If so, you can use that key to restore Windows.

I read in an earlier post that it's not possible to reinstall a copy of Windows on a Fujitsu without going through Fujitsu. That may be a hurdle for you, but, if it is your only option at least you have an option.

I was watching the video for using the Kaspersky Rescue disk, and it showed that the C:\ drive was showing on the desktop of the rescue environment. I assume you looked at that, already, but that is what I was wondering...if the C:\ drive folder was there like in the vid...

No not at all like the video. At first no indication of a c drive, but then later a 5th file showed up like the 4th and end letter was c, like in my explanation. Dang, I hope I can upload the Win 7 home premium on that new hard drive... I was hoping I could figure out a way to retrieve some of those files from the old hd, that would be lovely...

I have a guy that says he has my model restore disc, for $25, but I have to drive 60 miles to go get it. He has many different models. I just may try it. maybe just take may laptop there and have him load it for me and make sure. But then there's still the case of my lost files :0(

Oh, and yes it has the sticker and I did try that, but they said it was factory loaded with the computer and didn't apply. They want you to have bought the software and then, they will replace it. It looks like I've almost tried everything, yikes! I wish I could just afford a new computer...

Kaspersky is not designed to move files you want to save from a hard drive.

I just had the same problem with a drive in a PC here. I tried hooking up to another PC, and it was definitely gone. :(

Hmmm...wish I could think of anything, but at least you do have the option of data recovery. Maybe if you fish around you can find someone locally who will do this for you for a cut rate price? There must be some IT types around who know how to do this, and who will do it cheap. One place you could try to find someone is Yelp. The reviews there can be a big help.

I actually did some looking on the net for businesses based here where I am from, and the company I looked at had a level A and a level B. Level B is what you would need, and their price was $649 for a drive of 500 GB or less. The level A was for drives with just failing sectors, and I assume they simply run a chkdsk /r so it will boot and then move the contents of the drive to a backup drive. BTW, that price did not include a drive to move the data to, but if you go that route, I guess you would want to buy an extra drive to keep as a backup drive...

As for the reinstall...maybe you could agree to the tech's price for the restore disk installation if the installation works? Fujitsu sure seems to have some real back loaded premiums when it comes to keeping your PC up and running.

I have all the English versions of Windows7 saved on one of my data drives. They are straight from MS via Digital River.

    Need an .iso?

I've got that, and spindles of clearance DVDs...

    Hi there,

Just wondering after I receive the DVD Win 7, is there instructions on how to do it? Do I just put into the DVD rom? Does it boot up on it's own? Thank you :0)

Here is a video on how to install Windows 7:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mME9VLT7-xw

I believe you will be needing a new drive, unless something has changed from earlier in the thread.

Good luck getting your data off the old drive. I hope you can find an affordable option for doing that.

Just for the record, I think the problem with your failing drive may have been that the laser pickup that is used to read from the drive may be failing. This could be caused by the drive's circuitboard being faulty or by a mechanical problem associated with the actual laser arm or head. Here is a picture of the parts that can fail:

    Hard drive circuit board:
    http://techreport.com/r.x/wd-caviarse16/bottom.jpg

Hard drive rocker arm with laser pickup:

I doubt there is anything much wrong with the platter, which is probably what data extractors would be counting on...
