Hi, MG are my last recourse having been pulling hair for nigh on a week.

I upgraded my ancient XPSP3 system to Win7 last week and the sound disappeared.

I have an ASUS p5K se MOBO with Realtek integrated sound.

After googling a little I realise that there are problems with Win7 and this setup, but some folk have apparently solved by downloading the latest drivers from Realtek.

I have tried this with Direct drivers from Realtek and other sources but no go.

When audio is playing on the PC I have the little volume bars in Realtek audio jumping about just like they should but nothing, repeat nothing arriving at either speakers or headphones.

I have checked the BIOS and all is enabled correctly.

The only anomaly I have noted is in system devices, there is a little question mark next to multimedia audio controller (see attachment)

Windows cannot find a driver for this nor tell me what it is.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Open Control Panel and click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound click Troubleshoot audio playback.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I have been through all of that and finally given up. It just will not detect the plugs. I've decided to buy a replacement sound card for the Asus board. (25 bucks) There comes a point where its simple not cost effective to keep chasing a solution when it appears that thousands of peeps have had the same issue and not been able to solve it.

    Cheers to one and all!

    For what it's worth...
musksnipe is correct about problems with Realtek onboard audio when upgrading from Windows XP SP3 to Vista or 7. And there's no definitive fix. Buying a sound card was a wise idea.

FYI If ever you buy a new motherboard, ensure it has VIA onboard audio.

I suspect there are no proper Windows 7 drivers and that is why the sound has gone missing.
If it is a desktop, put in a sound card to replace the driverless onboard sound chip.
The other option is to revert back to XP SP3.
