    Hello all,

I am a little puzzled how to troubleshoot this computer as i tried a couple of things and it seems there is no indication of faulty hardware...

The computer is an hp p6310y
When the computer is powered on there is no display on the monitor at all i cannot even get to bios with this thing seeing as as soon as it is powered on its always black.

Now when i start the pc i get no beep codes, so at first i thought bad video card.. i took it out and used the on board one made no difference.

All the fans seem to be running good without issues , i tested the memory in another computer and it all works fine. Also when i take off all 4 sticks and turn on the pc i get no beeps at all which i believe i should.

I took out the power supply and tested it with one i know is working but no difference either. I took off all the hardware and inserted each one by one trying to find out what it was but everything looks fine.

I get no beeps at all even if i take off all the memory sticks and power on the pc without memory. The only thing that is left is a bad motherboard , maybe this is why i get no beeps?

    1. Are you sure the monitor works? You could be trying to solve a computer problem when in fact it might be a bad monitor or cable.

Have you connected the monitor to another working computer? Have you swapped out the video cable?

    2. Has the computer ever beeped? Not all do.
Some have LED codes on the screen, which is pointless if you have no display.

    1. Yes, Monitor works i am using it as i am typing this message

    2. I don't know this wasn't mine a family member gave it to me and said family member would not pay attention to such things regarding a computer. Although they did mention it was working before it was stored.

I tried using larger monitors to see if that was an issue but that also did not work. The fans spin and the dvd drives eject etc.. so everything seems to work just no display ( via video card or onboard) .

Have you changed the CMOS battery? Depending on how long it was stored and off power, it can be completely dead/flat.
I'm not sure if that would have any effect on the video display but after reading how a bad mouse stopped a computer from booting, I've learned not to rule out anything.

Changed cmos battery made no difference

Tried 3 different monitors and different mice and keyboards still no display

Based on what is working and what you have tried, the motherboard is shot.

Any recommendations on a cheap motherboard that i can use the parts from dead motherboard?

something that could use the amd x 4 cpu but a mini itx

I'm not familiar with AMD CPUs. There should be a model number on the motherboard. That'll help you determine the socket type. You should know the RAM type as you tested the modules in another PC. Then visit Newegg and look for a motherboard with that CPU socket and RAM type.

How can i tell if its actually the motherboard that is an issue and not the cpu?

I mean everything on the motherboard seems to function and turn on other than video output whether it be from the integrated chip or video card.

I just don't want to buy a motherboard and then have it be the cpu, i don't have any other amd cpus i can put on the motherboard to test ( although i do have several intel ones..).

Is there even an amd motherboard mini itx with an am3 socket because i can't seem to find any. I can get an ''ok'' amd am3 motherboard that would work with the cpu and memory in the old motherboard for about $30 but i don't know if the cpu is bad as well.

What is the smallest casing that i would be able to buy that supports a matx motherboard. I wanted to use a mini itx case

Based on the symptoms you described, it's the motherboard. The beeps come from the motherboard, and the CPU doesn't 'control' the video card or the onboard graphics.

With regards to the motherboard and case sizes, you'll have to speak to a hardware vendor.

Hopefully it isn't the cpu because i saw a post from another website called toms hardware where some other person with a similar issue of mine said it the non beeps could be a result of a bad cpu as well as the no video display.

I am not sure about this though so i was hoping someone knowledgeable on the subject could shed some light. Because a cpu would actually be more expensive than the motherboard , and if its both then yeah.. i don't even want to deal with that scenario

Diagnosing a hardware problem on a forum is always difficult. My neighbor's CPU fried and it also damaged the motherboard.

Your best option is to take the PC to a reputable hardware repair shop.

Hm considering any shop around me or within several miles will charge and arm and a leg to even give me a diagnosis this is definately out of the question. On average someone would charge $60-$80 usd for the diagnosis ( no joke).

I rather take my chances and lay down $35 on a motherboard and if it happens to be the cpu i could still use the motherboard for another project.

Actually i haven't taken anything to any pc repair shop for the past 5 orso years, i just fiddle with things until i eventually get something right or a few people in some forums point to towards the right directions.

Besides i have a whole stack of spare parts that could either be used salvage or make a fully functioning pc, i just wanted to see if i could bring this amd quad core cpu back to life be it in a different case or motherboard

Wow! Didn't realise it would cost that much just to diagnose the PC.
What about looking for the cheapest CPU that fits that socket? Even if it's used, as long as you can get some proof that it's working.

well after more fiddling i found the problem .. it is the cpu not the motherboard.

I should have taken off the heat sink and cpu before but since i never had an issue with a cpu before i thought it would be quite rare.

When i took off the cpu i noticed it wasn't completely seated firmly, so i thought that was the issue but when i looked at the gold pins i noticed immediately the gold pins were bent.

I fixed the pins with a screwdiver ( maybe not the best idea) and put it back in the motherboard, now it wasnt as loud to start however i still get no display and now 5-7 seconds after turning on the pc the fans from the motherboard now power off.

So i switched to an am2 motherboard ( am3 chips seem compatible with am2 boards too) and it did the same thing. However i knew the am2 motherboard was working because i fired it up with an amd x2 cpu and it worked so the problem is obviously the other cpu that had the bent pins.

Now my other question for anyone that can bring some insight is is a cpu with bent pins ''fixable''? Meaning if i bend them back in place with a small tool should it work? I think i accidentally got a bit of thermal compound on the pins because i reapplied some more to the top but probably accidentally touched the gold part with a bit of thermal compound i had in a finger.
