Problems with Windows Update

    I have an HP laptop. It has Win 7 Ultimate on it. I seldom use it, and wanted to bring it up to date. Windows Update from Control Panel seems to search in circles for a long time with no results. I downloaded the Tweaking.com Repair Windows Update to no avail.

    Any clues on how to get connection to the Redmond Mothership?

    If you rarely use it and it hasn't been updated in awhile, BE PATIENT. It will take some time for the update mechanism to scan your computer then populate a list of all the missing updates.

    Turn it on, walk away and let it work.

    After 25 minutes, I thought it was broken. I let it cook enough that it killed the battery. I will try again while on AC power tomorrow.

    Whoa, I never try to update while on battery!

    I've had to wait 45 minutes to an hour at times on Patch Tuesdays and this is on a computer that is updated at least once a month.

    I had a similar experience when I did an in place repair install of Windows 7.
    It took a very long time to complete the list and there were about 200 updates.

    Keep in mind that if there are many updates to be installed, it will also take a long time to Install all of them.
    The entire process took about one and a half hours.

    I never do a blanket install when there are 50 or more updates.
    I look through and do the oldest month first. Reboot, look the list over then do the oldest month again. Reboot.
    You might also find that after some updates are installed, other ones are added to the list.
