Owning the car just seems like an obscene waste of money to me.:p

Silicon Valley is one home of "obscene waste of money". I get a huge grin passing a Bugatti or Porsche as he floors it getting on the freeway. Yeah you have more money, but I have more acceleration. Then he slams on the brakes as I filter between the cars. Motorcycles are like that.
But when we get we get to Trader Vics he gets his door opened and car parked. I am told to "park in the back".
Maybe it's worth the price to him.

If I ever wanted a fast car, I would start with a used base model import and make as many engine, handling, and baking improvements as possible without having to do any major modifications to the frame (as some engine enhancements, especially dropping in a whole new engine, takes some severe frame modifications if I'm not mistaken). This way I could get a totally awesome, stable, fast car for less than $50,000. And I mean fast by ~120mph top speed but as much acceleration as possible. If you want a car to impress people who ride in it, acceleration that throws you back into your seat is much more impressive than saying "my car can go up to 200mph if it's in a straight line for long enough". A Veyron has insane acceleration and top speed, but it's not a car for normal people. Most people have to choose between power, acceleration, or top speed (and usually not a combination, the Veyron is one of few exceptions that combine the last two), and I believe that as far as the "wow" factor goes, acceleration is definitely the one to pick. Some people (diesel truck enthusiasts) can build machines that combine power and acceleration (winning both pulls and drag races at competitions) but that takes some incredible engineering and not a small amount of cash tantamount to owning a supercar anyways.

    Definitely!
For a lot less than the cost of running a Bugatti Veyron in just 1 year, I would happily settle for a Nissan GT-R / GT-R NISMO. It has seating for 4 and a luggage trunk.

Most of the world's fastest accelerating cars are totally impractical.
