    OK.

Not only have I seen another post by an XP user on the boards, I had someone come in the other night who was still using it. SO, I thought I would take a user poll.

Should XP be permitted to die with dignity?

    Yes, or no...

I think it's far too late for that.

I think it depends what you use your PC for.

    I recently posted the following:
    Consider the following...
I do audio editing for a dance instructor using Adobe Audition 1 - released in 2003. There is no better free DAW, and a comparable commercial program will cost a small fortune.

I use Microsoft Office 2003 Professional SP3 with the so-called file format converters. The latter allows me to open, edit & save to the newer formats - docx, xlsx & pptx/ppsx. Again there is no better free office suite and the latest MSO is not cheap.

I have numerous commercial softwares that will not run in Windows 7, 8/8.1 or 10. Buying the latest editions of those programs is not financially feasible - $1 = ±R14.

But, I also like 'nice' things. Seven Remix XP has transformed Windows XP to look almost like Windows 7.

Lastly, the biggest challenge facing off-line Windows XP users is when the hardware fails... but, there are virtual machines.

Thanks for the thread the mekanic.

BTW My primary OS is Windows 7 Ultimate, with MSO 2007 Enterprise.

Windows XP is dead... Long live Windows XP. ;)

I have xp in a virtual machine with extremely outdated versions of JRE and flash. In its spare time it enjoys playing with exploit kits and long walks on the beach..

I voted No because the question was: "Should any standard user still be running XP?" So, while I have every confidence that our regulars on MGs are well equipped to run an out of date OS, I do not have that same thought about your standard user.

I still use my XP offline to run an embroidery sewing machine, so it still has a use, but I will never go online with XP again. I respect that some geeks here are very capable of using XP online with a high degree of safety but I agree with Laura that most users would not.

I want to vote "Yes" and "No".;)

In retrospect, I should have voted No.

Here is what my Windows XP looks like. Enjoy... :p

Win 7 runs as well as XP with a little tweaking, I see no reason to run XP for a "standard user". If you cannot support yourself 100% you need to go to a supported OS IMHO.

XP superb OS but old in the hat and has some security flaws now that will likely not get fixed so a move to at least Win 8 is advisable.

I still have a VM with XP SP3 on it as its good to test issues out on it that folk may be questioning on the forum, never run it in daily PC use as I'm fully on Win 10 now, apart from Phone and waiting for the Lumia 950 for that.

BUT I do know some gov dept and companies have no choice but to keep running XP as the software they run is way too old to run on modern OSes.

I still have XP in a VM for running an old flatbed scanner; for backing up the wife's contacts on a 10 yr old Sony Ericsson museum piece of a phone; and for a CAD program that would cost £00s to update for 8/10. It's connected to the Win 7 Pro host on a host only connection but I keep even that disconnected unless needed. So XP ain't gonna die until the last user kills it, and that won't be me. Mind you I even keep 98SE on a VM and like to run it occasionally, if only to remind me that while hardware has advanced massively in the last 17 years, Windows itself hasn't really changed that much at all. 98SE was a remarkable OS.

I'd like to find a way to use my Hewlett Packard flatbed scanner now since it was compatible with XP and not the 7 that I'm using now.

You would need XP either in dual boot or in a virtual machine, and the scanner drivers for XP if it doesn't install automatically and if they are still available at HP.

Buy a junker xp box and run the scanner from it. We have a really old but GREAT Epson scanner at work we still use. Might not be a great idea to have it on the net...

I would try installing the driver using "Compatibility Mode".

Some of our old stuff is SCZZY or interfaces that are not common on newer computers, so we use the old ones.

I voted no . . . but like Eldon said, it all depends on what you use the computer for. If it's not connected to the internet then sure, why not use XP on it? Like users have said here there is still serviceable hardware that serves a useful purpose but is not compatible with newer versions of windows.

I had the same issue. My HP scanner worked fine with Win 7 32 bit, but lay there like a cat on a leash with Win 7 64 bit. I set up a virtual XP 32 bit machine just for the scanner. Not that I use it much anymore in my den. Wife has a combo printer scanner in her girl cave upstairs.

A bit off track, but did anyone else hate XP 64bit as much as I did? I found it to be clunky as heck.

I cleared up the last compatibility problem with our software last week. We are now going to be XP free.
Unfortunately our Win 7 installs are getting harassed by MS to upgrade to 10 so the change to 7 is not a total win.

The only real problem with Windows XP 64-bit was the poor support for software and drivers.

Who could ever have imagined something like that could possibly happen when you force a server OS to become the basis for something for personal computers? rolleyes

That does account for most of the issues. We used XP 64bit at my work for years, and it was a royal pain to keep individual workstations and servers clunking along and playing nice with each other.

We went to Win 7 64bit for the workstations, and the difference was like night and day. Like Mimsy pointed out, it always seemed to me they sort of cobbled together a half-arsed version for the general market.

XP 64bit was so-so on a stand alone PC, but on a large LAN and domain, it was a nightmare.
