Keep getting the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message frequently lately, using Win. 8.1, recently restored to factory. Any ideas? T.I.A.

Did you get the message from IE before you did the restore?
I'm trying to determine if something is missing when you restored that is causing the problem.

Thanks, Yes I did get the messages before the restore. It is not constant, seems as though certain program close it

After you restored Windows (and why did you do that?) did you install all the Windows Updates to get Windows 8.1 fully current?

Do you have any add-ons installed in IE? If so, run without them and see what happens. Most problems with IE are caused by conflicting add-ons.

Thanks for the reply. I restored back to Win 8.1 from Win.10, I still have Win.10 on another computer until get more familiar with it, but on my main computer I decided to go back to 8.1, not hard , I have most of my important programs on an external, just wanted to try Win.10. I will check the add-ons.

I was getting the same message. No crash-just the message block. Clicked close each time and continued on. Found my culprit in event viewer. Look for a few yellow exclamation marks. Mine problem was a dll used by FreeDownload Manager. Once I found out I installed a newer version and haven't had the message since. Find out what application is leading to the fault.

Just a thought, why does this only happen(at least to me), in Explorer and not Chrome or Firefox?

Because browsers do not use the same engines.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser_engine
Look at the picture in the right column and below the browser is the name of the engine it uses.

That's why people suggest you have more than one browser installed. If one has a problem, fire up another one.
