I cannot get rid of this that has hijacked my home page.
I had Avira but got rid of it hoping that would help. I'm not too savvy on this stuff.
I then downloaded AVG Free which I had for a long time with no problem. A few weeks ago someone told me Avira was better so I switched. Today it's popped up. I don't know how I got this but I've spent hours trying to get rid of it. It's not in my control panel or when I click Start and search.

I have run AVG, Spywareblaster and Malwarebytes. It's still there.
Can someone tell me how to get rid of this please?

Avira SafeSearch is a browser extension.
Open your browser and disable Avira SafeSearch under extensions or add-ons.

I've looked there and it's not on there. It's probably not because I uninstalled Avira. Do I have to reload Avira again to disable it?

Could it possibly be uncheck "enable 3rd party extensions?"

It would help if you post which browser you are using.
Also, which version of Windows are you using?

    Sorry.. Windows 7
    IE 11

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and look if it's there. Also look in C:\Program Files and C:\ProgramData.

If you can't find it, I suggest you download AdwCleaner and run it. Post the results and we will advise you.

Good heavens, I found out how to do it myself. Such a simple fix.

    Tools/Internet Options/General/type in my page/apply/DONE. Easy peasy.

I found nothing in programs and features.
I found nothing in C:/Program Files or C:/ProgramData

I down loaded AdsCleaner. Here's what it found.

    Thanks Jewels11.
    Kindly give us some time.
There's a lot of :crap that needs to be removed. I am consulting the malware fighters for detailed instructions.

    Thanks Eldon..
I am not quite sure of how this program works. I'm hoping you'll tell me how to delete too.

I had copied and pasted the results in Word. Now I can't find the program to open it again if I need to delete things. Should I download it again?

Check your Downloads folder for AdwCleaner. If it's not there, download it again and do another scan.

Under Results, uncheck everything in Services, Folders, Files, DLL, Shortcuts, Scheduled Tasks, Firefox & Chrome.
In Registry, ensure everything is checked excluding AVG items.
    Then click Cleaning.

    Jewels11 Private E-2

I had to download it again. You want me to uncheck ALL of those except AVG items? Wow.. Even Reimage items?

Under Registry, tell me again. I'm suppose to uncheck everything except AVG. I don't want to screw anything up.

  16. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

Registry - select all excluding AVG.
    The rest - select nothing.
    And click Cleaning, not Uninstall.

PS You could create a System Restore point prior to cleaning.

I said to uncheck folders and files. Now you've deleted AVG Security Toolbar.
And I said to select everything in registry excluding AVG. Again, you've now deleted AVG registry keys and values.
    You should re-install AVG.

With regards to Reimage Repair, did you buy the software?

What makes you think you screwed up your computer?

  19. Jewels11

    Jewels11 Private E-2

Because it said some items in the Registry are deleted. I didn't uncheck or check anything.

No, I didn't buy Reimage Repair. I don't even know what it is. Good or Bad?

I just ran a AVG scan and it worked. I'll just redownload it.

  20. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Then everything is good. :cool
I asked one the malware fighters to look at your original scan log and she advised me before I posted.

The registry keys and values that were deleted were junk.

Reimage Repair is payed for software that will replace corrupted Windows files. How good it is, I don't know.
I would rather use the Windows disc and do a repair when needed.

FYI In future, when you install any software, look carefully at everything. Uncheck what you don't want or need. Free software are often bundled with all kinds of :crap
When you download from MajorGeeks :major, there will be a warning on the details page.

    You're welcome. :major

I suggest you also run CCleaner. Leave the settings at the default.
And run it's registry cleaner. It's the safest there is. If you're unsure and there are many items detected, copy and upload the list.
When you click Fix selected issues... you'll see the window in my screenshot. Click Yes.

I ran Registry Cleaner and tons of items came up. I won't do anything until I hear back from you.

I've tried all morning to upload pictures to show you what came up. I still can't get them small enough. I'm using Word and have 5 screen shots but each over about 116 ? KB. I'm not smart enough to figure this out. Can I just click on fix selected issues?

  24. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

Just to be sure we're on the same page...

    1. CCleaner > Analyze > Run Cleaner. No need to check anything.

    2. CCleaner > Registry > Scan for Issues. Click the first item, scroll down, hold the Shift key, and click the last item. Right-click and then click Save to text file... Upload that file.

    3. CCleaner > Options > Cookies. Select which ones you want to keep i.e. those from sites you regularly visit - like MajorGeeks. Else you would have to log in every time.

So, I told you I was pretty illiterate at this.
This morning I scanned the Registry first. So now..
I continue with your instructions above?

First select the cookies you want to keep. It's no big deal if you don't - they will simply be re-created.

Then run the main cleaner. Have a look at the total size of what will be removed and let us know.

Lastly run the registry cleaner. It's the safest available.
When you are prompted to backup the registry, select yes. And do make a note of where the backup is saved.

  27. Jewels11

    Jewels11 Private E-2

There aren't too many cookies because I delete my cache 2 or 3 times a week.

After running the main cleaner it says 0.43 MB has been removed.

On the Registry, do I scan again or just fix what has shown up in my attachment?

  28. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

Deleting the cache on a regular basis is good practise. Most of the junk files are temporary internet files - that's why you had just 0.43 MB.

No harm in scanning the registry again. Remember the backup when prompted before cleaning the registry.

  29. Jewels11

    Jewels11 Private E-2

I scanned the Registry again. There is no where it prompts me to backup.
