The Weird Things Our Pets Do

So everyone knows that pet owners love talking about their furry babies. People who don't have pets are especially aware of that, because they hate when a conversation they were enjoying goes straight off into "my dog is so..."-land, and they are the only person in the room who can't contribute anything since they are the only one who doesn't have a dog. Or cat. Or fish tank, or parakeet, or pet anaconda, or whatever the pet is that everyone else is talking about.

As an obsessive pet owner, who love talking about her furry babies, I have decided to start a thread about them and the weird things they do. I'll start:

When my black lab puts herself to bed for the night, she rubs her front paws over the sides of her face, just the way a cat does. She does both paws at once, since she is laying down, but she always does it. Then she licks first one front paw, then the other, and does the rubbing of her face again. My better half tells me this is what happens when a puppy grows up surrounded by cats...

This is where the rest of you share your own stories of the bizarre yet somehow completely logical things pets do just because they're weird like that.

Before my dog passed away she used to rub drag her bottom on our carpet she would literally walk with her front paws like a human while dragging her bottom across the rug.

When ever she did this she glanced to see if anyone noticed her and if she thought no one saw her she would smell the place afterwards. If someone saw her she jumped and acted like she was playing. Sneaky..

I never really got why some dogs did this... was it an itch problem?

There are many reasons why dogs scoot on their behinds and it's usually some form of irritation. You can read more about it here.

It's an itchy problem. My late Maltese Poodle did the same. And she never looked embarrassed. She was one of a kind and died at the age of 16 years and 3 months...

No. She needed her anal glands expressed.

My French Bulldog rubs herself on the carpet. I won't go into detail, but it has nothing to do with her anal glands.

My Frenchie also loves to lay down in her bed and lick the side. When I catch her, I say no licking and she immediately stops, but sometimes she doesn't have the bed so she licks my Boxer...who lets her. lol

    She also burps....a lot.

Honestly, she is just not lady like at all.:D

Mimsy, that is really cute about your dog doing the cat stuff. I'd imagine that is exactly what happened as far as where she learned it.

We had a dog that loved to snow sleigh ride down the hill with family or strangers, over and over.

Decades ago we had a TsiTzu who loved to carry a doughnut shaped treat on her nose and walk around like that. Regrettable never took a picture of that. It was hilarious seeing her like that.

Our Rhodesian Ridgeback loves to go on walks and if she feels that it is time for a walk she goes over and sits beside the bench where her leash is stored. Every so often she gives out a little whine and when you over go to check on her she immediately catches your gaze then stares intently at her leash.

She also pushes the limits of obedience especially when we are eating. She is usually told to get on her bed which is in the large family room but this is an open plan room that includes the kitchen and also the dining room. The three areas are divided by an L shaped kitchen bench. She has worked out she is technically still on her bed if only one paw is on the bed allowing her to see around the kitchen bench and use her big brown puppy dog eyes to watch us eating in the dining room. She doesn't leave her bed unless called and if told to get back on her bed properly she then starts the process of moving forward slowly until only a hind paw remains on the bed and she is at full stretch to be able to see around the bench.

Our previous Ridgeback (now in doggy heaven) could sing happy birthday. She knew all the words and also the hip hip hoorays. To get her to sing you needed to first light the candles on the birthday cake and then someone sing me me me me to set the starting note then off she would go. Birthday parties were always great fun and any visitors were always very impressed. Oh and no candles then no happy birthday as she wouldn't sing without the cake and candles.
