Using an old system, and total size of drive is 37.2 gb and frees space is 5.68. free space was smaller than that, after i ran ccleaner cleaner option and deleted things, i deleted some mp3 files, uninstalled 3 programs , I use mozilla firefox so i deleted to old firefox data folder from my deskstop. the computer did 2 chkdisk scans earlier also.

So is there anything else i can do to get more than 5.68 free space. I don't know what else to delete

If this is a desktop, you can check with local computer repair shops and buy a used hard drive and slave it for extra room, move programs and files to the slave drive.

Cleaning up old PC's, and making them run like new, is my area of expertise. But it's hard to do by 'forum'.
I won't let CCleaner anywhere near any PC of mine. It can take out things that will leave your PC un-bootable. It happened to me (twice).

There is ONE program that I do use and trust, and that is "WinUtils" (Windows Utilities). Plus, I have some little cleanup routines (batch files) that I wrote myself,
that run every day, from my 'Startup' folder.
Also you can go into your Add/Remove programs, in your Service Panel, and UN-Install every program on your HD, that you don't need or use anymore.
We all have some of those.

With that file load, of yours, I'd almost HAVE to believe that you've got some movies, music or just lots of pictures, that could and probably SHOULD be moved off to an external Hard Drive or a Flash Drive.
The OS just does not take up that much space. XP, even with a good program load, usually takes up less than 20GB of HD space.

    Good Luck, and Happy Holidays!

Check the Windows folder for memory.dmp. If it's there delete it, and you will get back alot of space. If you run CCleaner, you can set it to remove it when it runs using the Custom files and folders option. Go to options and then Include to set CCleaner to remove any certain files you would like to have removed.

If you are running Windows 7, 30-35 GB is a fairly base line installation after programs and updates are added and with a gig or two of files. TimW's idea is a really good idea if you can get your hands on a spare drive...

Download and run this utility. It's free and portable, and will show where all the space has gone.

Export the report and upload it.

BoostSpeed is not free. It costs $59.95.

    Uninstall unwanted programs.
You wont free up more space on that small hard disc.

You could use compression to compact saved files that don't change much, for example, documents and pictures and then remove the originals. See http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortdate/compression.html

However, I would suggest removing files to an off-line backup, either cloud based or disk based.

How old is this machine? From the looks of the used disk space and size, it's XP with a lot of data and/or applications.

Make, model, OS, and service pack please.

The last computer we got with a 40GB hard drive was built in 2004 (Dell Dimension 2400).

I'm guessing that computer is 13 - 14 years old. If that's the original hard drive, I suspect it isn't in the best of health if used for 13 years.

Technically you can. CCleaner gives you the option of deleting them during its runs, so Piriform at least doesn't think of them as critical. I typically choose to leave the minidump folder, because dump events are fairly rare and the files fairly small. Also, sometimes one minidump file won't tell the whole story of a developing problem. Being able to look back over minidump information can be helpful.

Have you run the Windows disk cleaner option? Start->Computer->right click on C and select Properties->General tab->click on Disk Cleanup button. This will start an analysis. Post back any questions about any large amounts of data that Disk Cleanup says can be removed...

post #8 you say now @ 20g free space. Over 50% . Pretty good. Follow TimW's advice in post #2 and should be good.

I'm good with the amount of free space i have now. When i found a backup file and deleted it i got most of the free space. It was a big file, when i tried to backup system in case hard drive failed, it only backuped 50% of the drive and shut off , so my computer would shut off and have disk boot errors cause i didn't have enough space on disk or errors on the disk. but its fine now.

I'm going to get a new computer anyway. No I have not used KCleaner . This is an old pc with xp

Just for future reference May you cannot backup a drive to itself. You have to attach another drive and direct the backup to that, or you can use DVDs, flash drives etc.
