Networking Win98 To Winxp Or Win8.1?

Basically, is it possible? All these computers have a USB port. I may be able to get the right cable for it. I'm looking for an inexpensive or free method. Also, if I need special consideration for this, what do I need to do?

Not if you really mean Win 98, as it does not support USB at all. However Win 98 SE does, so initially it depends on which you are using. Having said that, XP etc use Ethernet for networking rather than USB so you would need to find a suitable USB > Ethernet adapter and, even if that works, expect more obstacles being put in your way by XP/8.1 firewalls and other security features. Are you some sort of masochist?

Well..I'm using Win98SE, actually. The networking is not really necessary. I can transfer files through USB drives. I'd just like to share resources. :)

Don't get me wrong - I too like to see if I can get things to work that no normal person would see much point in. :)

    Well..I admit to wasting time that way...even I don't like wasting time. :( Uhh...can I SPAM here? It's for freeware. :)

Just a repost, I think I got the wrong thread before...

I would just like to add my 2 cents if I may...

To get Windows 98SE and Windows XP connected to a Windows Vista/7/8/10 network e.g. hard-line or WiFi, you only need to run the following Windows service file, simply Click Here to download the Windows 98 / XP patch file.

Just run the patch file on your Windows 98 / XP system and follow the instructions given. You will now be able to connect your computers over the network to each other.

This file will enable Windows 98SE / XP to see your other PC's running Windows Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 on your LAN or WiFi network. :)

You got it wrong. I want to connect Win98 to WinXP or Win8.1. I also need it to be quick and transient. I will want to use the network only occasionally. Also, I want a simple connection, i.e. a USB<->USB connection. And, I don't want to spend a lot of money on it.

    PCRacer...

I have a question. Will 98SE and XP PCs be able to see each other also? I think I remember that patch from the days of moving files from a 98SE to XP while upgrading. Handy patch to have around for the rare occasion of working with 98SE PCs. Thanks for the link...

The link works both ways, Win98SE will see WinXP and WinXP will see Win98SE, and every other Windows from Vista and upto Win10 will see WinXp and Win98SE...

    Hope this helps.
