I would appreciate some suggestions for software that would allow me to copy my movies to a hard drive.

My legal rights...I did purchase ALL of the DVD's in my collection. My intent is to copy the movies to a hard drive. Strictly as a convenience to me. Thank you

I recommend the $29.95 program WinX DVD Ripper Platinum.

I've used different versions of this to rip commercial DVDs to avi or mp4. I store the movies on sd cards or micro sd cards. We have 3 netbooks and a tablet. I carry my movies with me to watch when there is no internet access and I have a wait.

Sorry for the slow reply, really fun weekend.
Purchasing a DVD does not give you the right to copy it, read the article carefully. Any encryption or protection you have to break to copy the movie makes a copy illegal. Unfortunately this may include changing the format from multi file to single file. That being said, I do the exact same as plodr.

all magazines articles that i have read over the years, always start off with the usual disclaimer...
it is illegal to make copies, but we do have the right to make a backup copy. then the articles go on
and give various ways of making backup copies of dvd's...
for me, slysoft anydvd HD is an amazing product and worth every single penny it costs.

i'm a mac person, and anydvd works well in a win7 parallels virtual machine with a firewire external dvd player.
    good luck with it!

With regards to the legalities... and I'm not a legal expert.
    1. It's legal to make backup copies of your CDs, DVDs, BDs.
    2. It's illegal to bypass the copy protection on those discs.
    3. While you bought and own the DVDs, you don't own the content. Much like when you 'bought' Windows on disc, you didn't. You bought a license to use Windows.

Why are there legal software, free and commercial, to bypass the copy protection on DVD-Videos?
We can debate that issue until we run out of beer.

Like plodr, I use WinX DVD Ripper Platinum which I got for free.
    And so can you. :)

I think there's a difference in ripping to various formats for use on different devices, and making an exact copy for backup purposes.

Also, while I don't give a sh!t what American Associations and Regulators decide, how do you think others feel? Do you think governments are going to arrest their citizens en masse because of a decision by the US Librarian of Congress?

    FYI I don't condone piracy.

There is no way around it, copying movies is illegal. But there is a web site that legally offers free movies legally but only because they are over 50 years old, and the copyright expired. New movies are copyrighted for 75 years.

Wow! I really didn't expect this much of a response. Thank you one and all.
I have checked into most of the articles that I was linked to. The consciences is
don't go there, don't do that. Being one of those poor souls that is unable to get
away with any thing. I will give up on the plan.
