GREAT posts and links Eldon, cheers.

Folks do need to check if book is available in your location as it defaults to USA and not all free books are for other countries.

Thanks. I do have a Kindle app that came preinstalled on my Android tablet. I'll have to see if these work.

oops just noticed these are books about Win 10. I won't be downloading them.

Sometimes I have to be hit on the head with a brick before I take notice of something!

    plodr uses Windows 7.
And one day, she and I will run Windows 7 in a virtual machine... in Linux. And I will too.

No virtual machine for me! No more dual boot either, Eldon. :D
DavidGP, I stayed away from Windows 8 just as I did Vista. Every other version I ran.

Funny, I went to help a friend get her printer working again and she had a tower with Vista and a laptop with 8 or 8.1. I had to ask for help in 8. Those stupid tiles kept coming up and I didn't know how to get to the desktop and programs! :p

I just pull the obsolete Windows computers off the internet and continue to use them. We have an XP in the basement that my husband still uses with an old trusty HP printer. I have a 2K upstairs in which the old ZoneAlarm (before Checkpoint wrecked it) is locked down so tight that when it fires up, even though it is connected to the router, it can't get onto the internet. I use that to rip my music CDs into mp3 files to put on my mp3 player and also to rip my purchased movie DVDs into mp4 files so I can store on an sd card and rake with me on a netbook when I travel.

I will probably install linux LXLE Desktop on my husband's netbook so he can surf. He rarely surfs on his Windows 7 desktop so if I pull it offline, he won't miss a beat.
I've tested the live version on his netbook and it works well. I'm currently running it live from a USB stick on my 7" ASUS eeepc. My old netbook only has a 4GB ssd so I can't install a modern distro. It works fine but slow from the stick. The old installed distro works great offline so I continue to keep that.
I'm not sure if I'll install linux on my netbook (the newer 11.6" one).

I currently have a 7" Android tablet with a bluetooth keyboard which I surf on. If I decide to use android to surf, I will buy a larger tablet. Who knows, in 4 years time, google may have a Android laptop.

I think I'll stay away from Apple because of the connectors. I'd end up having to purchase lots of adapters. But I won't say I'd never get an Apple products. Things can change a lot in 4 years.

So it will probably be linux and android for us come 2020.

Have a really good Win7 book given to me by the author http://www.amazon.co.uk/Troubleshooting-Windows-7-Inside-Out-ebook/dp/B00JDMPC3Q well worth a read but sadly not free, but you know most of this stuff already.

I agree with you plodr on Apple as had them and folk in work who have them far rather they went with like likes of my Surface, a few docs now are getting them since seeing mine. Linux I like, need to install it again, kinda liked Kubuntu a few years back, may over the holidays fire up a VM and add it to play with, messing with Windows 2012R2 server today, needed to update but dont know what I will use it for, media or backup server prehaps, and like you tech moves on so next year or in 3, Apple or others may come out with something new.
