Go ahead and hate me all you want for being so down on your cute little Star Wars. I just don't think it's nothing to write home about. Way back in 1977 I did see its debut. I thought it was OK then but nothing to write home to mom about. The whole movie just comes across to me as a wee bit too childish now. Thus I can understand why the kiddies are so excited to see it now. But with the way the media has been shoving it down our throats long before it even hit the theaters, is just one more, if not the main reason I'm sick of it already. If somebody wants to pay me enough $$$$ cha ching, I'll drag my poor self to a theater and see it. I'll probably just be goofing around with my iPhone there anyhow. LOL

I think its attraction are the kids of the 70s that are grown up now and take their kids to see the new incarnation, I agree with you on the hype but they have to get the film costs back, a bit like other films or products, e.g. Harry Potter movies or latest Apple product, a hell of a lot of hype and getting people hooked on "I need that" type of addition.

I kinda like scifi and loved Star Wars for the way it started a new generation of space and science films, it was damn creative coming from George Lucas, who created the whole idea http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/History_of_Star_Wars#History

I like my share of science fiction movies too David. Such as 2001 A Space Odyssey, Star Trek, Soylent Green etc. Perhaps Star Wars is getting more hype than usual this time around is because Disney is in charge of the production this time around. Which is all the more reason to believe it's aimed for a younger audience. One thing that's interesting in that link of yours is they said Darth Vader's black helmet intention resembles a samurai helmet. I always thought it had something more to do with the Nazi SS, that's what it says in this link too http://www.fastcodesign.com/3042202/weird-facts-behind-6-famous-star-wars-costumes

I think you are right on the hype and thats why I mentioned Harry Potter, as in same ilk, the likes of 2001 and Soylent Green ( awesome film with Charlton H) where in an age we did not have merchandise to cover the film production costs, they did special effects as they could by spit and gaffer tape as now a days its CGI and that is expensive.

You could be right in the Nazi element to Star Wars as Lucas did in part create it from his watching as a kid WW2 and more so dogfights as in the X-wings and Tie_fighters then the Stormtroopers are the personification of Evil so could be likened to NAZI SS, I think in some respects it could be a tenuous link but a fair one to make. Can get many characteristics form Nazi Germany to Stormtroopers in marching style, the salute that was touted by some a few weeks ago is similar but wrong hand and its a fist over a salute, semantics I know but you have to be detailed if you want to critique.

In the end its a bit of escapism from normal and modern life and I like that, be it SciFi or Comedy, I'm not too fussed on the premise or suggested by conspiracy theroists the message.

I understand your mentioning of Harry Potter too David. There was an awful lot of hype surrounding those films too, perhaps not quite as strong as all the Star Wars hype you're witnessing now but still more than these films deserved. I myself never watched on Potter film. Although I did view it on TV once and quickly turned the channel. It just got me to thinking, I've seen enough of this long ago when I was forced to study The Hobbit back in grade school. At least that was more fun to study at the time in school than your basic math or English classes.

I'm not complaining about Lucas throwing in that Darth Vader Nazi theme into his films. After all I do understand his goal was to create a character who appeared as dark and evil as possible and that's where the Nazi theme works quite well for Vader even if he stayed away from creating a holocaust his films. Vader doesn't go quite that far he's more of a manifest destiny type of guy in the mold of another Caesar.

    Data

I agree with your post and not my intention to link you with condoning Nazi Germany at all, but your reference was apt as may on the internet have been talking about this and basically out of context from my opinion. I personally think Potter gained way way more hype than Star Wars or the Hobbit films, but that's my perspective. I can see your Caesar reference in Vader quite well and more so than a Nazi, so a better reference.

On a side point what are your films or genres of choice, only curious?
Mine comedy and scifi or basically many areas apart from period drama, dont do those.

Yes, from what I see Vader's goal is just to build an empire or rule the universe. I don't know if he has anything against any ethnic groups in the same manner Hitler did. Vader just comes across as an evil villain since he's all for ruling the universe at all cost. I've seen this a million times before, the only thing that makes it different is it's happening in outer space. I'll tell you if Vader really wants to be so evil all he has to do is throw his victims into outer space with no space suit on and this is what would happen to them:
    1. Asphyxiation

If you got sucked out of a space shuttle that was barreling through outer space and you weren't wearing a spacesuit, you'd instantly feel all the air rush out of your lungs. There's no pressure in space, so air expands and would painfully tear through the tissue of your lungs as this happened. So in the event that you are sucked out of a space ship or pushed out of an airlock without a spacesuit, it's a better idea to exhale has much as possible, rather than take one final gulp of air.

In an extreme environment like space, it would only take about 15 seconds for your body to use up all the oxygen in your blood. The second that deoxygenated blood reached your brain, you'd pass out.

    2. Loss of bowel control

You lose control of some bodily functions with such severe lack of oxygen. Researchers conducted an experiment in 1965 where 100 dogs were put in a vacuum-like environment. The researchers found that not only were the dogs' lungs drained of air, their bowels evacuated immediately. So yes, you'd probably poop your pants.

    3. Boiling blood

The lower the pressure, the lower a liquid's boiling point is. That's why water boils much faster at the top of a mountain than it does at the bottom.

In space, there is no pressure. So the boiling point could easily drop to your body temperature. That means your saliva would boil off your tongue and the liquids in your blood would start to boil.

    4. Blocked circulation and exploding capillaries

All that bubbly boiling blood could block blood flow to vital organs. That in itself could kill you. And if the bubbles pass through your heart, it could cause a heart attack.

The bubbling would also probably burst some capillaries, so you could find yourself covered in splotchy bruises.

    5. Bloating

If the liquid in your blood stream started boiling, it would turn into gas that would make your skin swell. NASA makes it clear that your body wouldn't explode and your eyes wouldn't pop out of your head like many science fiction movies suggest. However, you would swell up and get really painfully puffy.

    6. Sunburn

Even while you're floating there unconscious and puffy, your troubles aren't over. If you end up facing the sun when you get sucked out of your spaceship, then you'll probably be drifting through temperatures around 250 degrees Fahrenheit. That means an instant sunburn.

    7. Cell mutation

You'd also be bombarded with radiation from other stars besides the sun. Harmful UV light, gamma rays, and x-rays can warp your cells. The radiation dose would not give you superpowers. If you survived long enough for someone to pull you back on board, you could still die later from radiation poisoning or cancer.

    8. Freezing

If you're not drifting in front of the sun, it's probably around minus 440 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade. That doesn't mean you'll necessarily freeze to death, though, according to NASA.

Heat has to radiate through something. Even while drifting through space, your muscles would still generate heat. That heat would not have anywhere to escape into if you're surrounded by the vacuum of space. So freezing should be pretty far down on your list of concerns.

I can't say I care enough to be annoyed. I have to say, I'm more amused by it than anything. People were actually waiting for 2 weeks in front of a theater before it opened. lmao...um, why? You buy the tickets online now and I'm pretty sure there were showings of it every half hour at our local theater.

Anyway, I heard it was really good. I've never been a Star Wars fan though. Give me Kirk or Spock over Darth or Luke any day. :D

Same here, Star Wars comes off as too childish to care about, whereas Star Trek comes off as a new twist on Shakespeare. As you can see others have noticed this too http://public.wsu.edu/~delahoyd/shakespeare/star.trek.html

Well Data is one of my fave Star Trek characters. I wasn't thinking about Data though when this name popped into my head. In many ways I do like Star Trek the Next Generation better than the original Star Trek too. This scene is a true classic http://intruderalert.com/cafe/images/emoticons/hysterical.gif

As soon as I read #2 in your list it reminded me of a differential Star Wars battle, a Friday or Saturday night in our A&E (ER dept to those in USA) and the boozed up binge drinkers and their loss of bowel movements, enough at times to defeat a small army, luckily I dont work in A&E. I do agree Star Trek and its Shakespearian references and in part I wonder if Patrick Stewart with his classical background in acting was able to add from what I remember in many episodes more.

AS Wesley was mentioned and tenious link I know but really do catch Wil Wheaton's, TVCrimes podcasts, quite good as is his twitter feed.

All I know is Patrick Stewart was able to add a new dimension to the role that William Shatner never capitalized on. That doesn't mean I dislike Shatner's style. I just like how gallant and noble Stewart was in the role of captain. That's something that seems to be missing from Star Wars too. I haven't seen Wesley in any other roles besides doing his part on Star Trek. I don't know if I'd care to see him now unless he could find a way to be as obnoxious and bratty as he was on Star Trek. That was both entertaining and good for laughs too, especially when he annoys Patrick Stewart.

Wil Wheaton is really good in The Big Bang Theory and is playing himself.

I agree on Sir Pat Stewart, classical actor who also adds some humour as well.
