    Hi

You can try this HERE but one of the lastest updates, kinda forces you into Windows 10 and then once installed you need to rollback to previous, a messy PITA way!

The permanent solution that actually works (and can be reversed at any time by making the value '0') is this registry key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

I used it for several months, since MS is actually forcing it on people. The alleged 'choice' is illusory. I reversed it when I was happy to upgrade.

Thanks Max, Just applied that change to my Registry. I am quite happy with Win7 and will upgrade to 10 when and if I choose the time is right, NOT MS....

I've got Win 7 installed now and I was looking for KB3035583 (GWX) in the list of updates so I could hide it but, it hasn't reared it's ugly head. I've got Win 10 running on another partition anyway.

3035583 is listed as Important if you have Windows Pro. I was offered this on 16 Dec.
If you run Windows Home Premium, you can find it in the optional updates. (I found it there on the three Home premium computers in the house).
I suspect, come January, MS will move it out of Optional and into Recommended/Important. MS said that in January it will attempt to push Win 10 onto the computers of those of us who are hold outs.

I have 8.1 and from the beginning I deleted most of Prog~Folders/Windows Apps and blocked the store and all window 8.1 apps from the firewall in/out. I didn't install the huge update last april or may whenever. Some 650 mb so a huge update.I have never seen the icon everyone talks about or been offered any major change to this pc. Maybe I got lucky?

  9. MaxTurner

    MaxTurner Banned

It's probably because you have not installed the pre-requisite updates. You don't get offered Win 10 unless you have them. It's mostly a mistake to not install a WU update marked as 'important' - if that 65omb one was marked as such. It is easy to not subscribe to the Win 10 update if it is offered.

  10. mdonah

    mdonah Major Geek Extraordinaire

That 650 MB update is an Update rollup for Win 8.1 (like a Service Pack in XP, Vista and 7). It's important that you get it. But, once it's installed, there will be other important updates that will need to be installed. Unfortunately, MS thinks you must get Win 10, so that KB3035583 (GWX) will show up in the list of updates. Look for it and right-click on it and select Hide Update. If it manages to get installed, it can be uninstalled by going to Programs and Features -> Updates.

I still get 2 or 3 each month for 64bit 8.1 and sometimes a couple for IE11 and that's all. I'm good like this. We'll see if MS gets more aggressive in '16. Hope not!

  14. MaxTurner

Any Windows 8 system needs that 650mb roll up WU update just to stay secure on 8.1. It's actually not directly relevant to Win 10.
There are three types of Windows OS updates - Important, Recommended and Optional. The first should always be applied. Any user will find that advice here on MG and every reputable IT forum. The other two types can be applied with discretion after simply reading the KB number guide page. It's simple. But not getting 'important' updates under the misapprehension they are just there to bug a user is short-sighted.

The roughneck approach to this. Remove these and wait for them to come back in Windows Updates (make sure Windows updates is set for "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"). Once they are back, hide them one by one:

It's not there on 7 or 8, you have to create it as a regedit entry on any system that is within the Win10 update offer if you do not want the update.
But long before you do that, you should first ensure that your system has all the required 'important' updates, preferably in date order. It needs to be done carefully or you may experience avoidable problems.

Yeah I've seen that during searches for several update kb's. I have also seen in MS's own topics where some labeled as important are then described as optional. And tho MS has said to deny future updates if certain kb's aren't installed I still get kb labeled as security updates for 64bit without the controversial update. Any major update offered, I wait a while to see what the conversation leads to. My machine works well and I don't want it hosed up by an install.

I have seen their directions on how to fix a hosed updates on major kb also and most describe doing a patch. If a update puts a system in a reboot loop continuously - how do you patch it.

I'm going to be careful with all my pc's now because I believe from here on out "All roads lead to 10".

The registry fix to disable the Win10 OS upgrade is one that has to be created. It's not there by default. For someone not afraid to carry out registry entries, it is by far the simplest way to avoid an upgrade to Windows 10 and nothing MS try to do will work to override it. The initial Win 10 upgrade road map can be delayed by simply not installing updates that are preparing for it.
I've not experienced any problems on 7 or 8 or 8.1 (apart from the one that messed up sfc/ scannow) with updates marked as 'important', and I've only installed 'recommended' and 'optional' when I have read what the specifics are and judged they are relevant to my system, and always create my own restore points before doing them. Never had a solitary issue with that.
Some users think that occasional problems with accepted updates that mess something up is MS actively trying to annoy people. It isn't. There will always be some issues when upgrading many 100s of millions of systems. And it is true that all roads lead to Windows 10, but only if you allow it. It wont if you don't.
But anyway, I'm using 10 now on 3 systems that were 8.1 and apart from slight - very slight - differences in GUI I think it's a decent OS. But I am glad I waited 5 months.

The first sentence should be clarified. If someone hasn't already installed the preparatory updates for Win 10, then the OS upgrade registry entry is not there. But has to have its value modified if someone is just wanting to stop the further steps to upgrade.

I don't think so, but if you do just ignore them. I only wish I had kept some of the stuff that was said about XP in its early days, but nowadays from some folk you would think it was the ultimate OS. I like 10 too, and 8.1 and 7. Fact is it doesn't make a huge difference which you use.

You could take a look at O&O ShutUp 10. You can stop 10 being quite so inquisitive.

I have one Win 10 box that I like, the rest went back to 7. Too many problems doing normal routine things, Win 10 is still in development, especially in the drivers.

But ask yourself this - how will MS make money on Win 10?
Have you read the "Windows as a service" plan?
Why is Win 10 a free upgrade - unless you want Enterprise?

There really is no market for income from an Operating System - outside of Businesses - any more. MS recognise that by making Win 10 free to all non-business users already on Win 7 and up. MS have already made plain in their plans - with Win 10 being automatically updated as an when - that it is likely to be the last 'totally new' OS anyway, it will just be updated/upgraded.
And no one else charges for OS upgrades any more, not Apple, not Android, not Google Chrome, and not even MS on Windows Phones.
And PC sales - as opposed to tablet/notebook/laptop/smart - are plummeting.
And MS has never made much money from OS sales as a proportion of its turnover.

Turn off automatic updates or Windows 10 will be downloaded to your computer and you will have two options: upgrade to 10 Now or Tonight.
MS changes settings you have to stop updates. If you want to be alert to any changes or remove anything with Windows 10 that might already be sitting on your computer (a 3+GB unknown file) then I suggest you get GWX (Get Windows X=10) Control Panel.

Call me crazy but, I actually like Windows 10 — after a clean install of it that is — I didn't like what going the update route did with my desktop apps but they all work just fine in Win 10 after the clean install (and re-installing the desktop apps, of course).

If you definitely do not want Win 10, then why not simply do this regedit to permanently disable any Win 10 upgrade???
If you do this you will never ever again be bothered by a Win 10 upgrade prompt.

Because that only stops the initial onslaught, there are Win 7 updates that hurt Win 7. Supposedly to prepare you for Win 10, no way MS would hurt a previous OS.

The registry edit stops an OS upgrade, period. That is what the OP has said they want. They haven't said anything broader.
As far as preparatory OS updates for Win 10, I never seen them labelled 'important', so they don't need to be installed.
    It's that simple.

No one says MS doesn't serve updates that cause a problem - like that one you quote a full two years ago.
But I don't see the relevance to this thread. If someone wants for sure to stop their OS (whether 7 or 8) being upgraded to 10 just needs to do the simple regedit.

Whether or not they should have to do that, and whether or not MS should be trying to force users to upgrade (which they are) is neither here nor there. It's a fact. But that's a philosophical discussion.

I can't find that registry key item. Regedit Search can find "update" only for Foxit not Windows.

Also, when I manually update, it says, "Downloading Windows 10" but I was careful what I selected to install. In fact, Windows 10 was not listed for any of the packages.

    plodr,
Thanks for covering my butt and tracking down that post.
I created the key and set it to 1.
I may want to upgrade to 10 but when I am ready.
My concern is, when I ran Windows Update yesterday there were 82 items but none looked like Windows 10. So I clicked "install" and the screen changed to "Downloading Windows 10". I started the question to post here and got concerned about that message so I stopped the download but it seems 14 or so installed before I got it stopped.
Today I reports 68 updates are available and when I click "install" the screen still changes to "Downloading Windows 10".
I just thought, maybe I need to reboot for the registry change to take effect.
I'll try that and report the results.

But in the mean time, do those of you that run "Windows Update" and click "Install" get the "Downloading Windows 10" message of something else?

    Thanks
    Pete

  45. petejc

    petejc Private E-2

    The reboot didn't help.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate DisableOSUpgrade=1
But when I click Install Updates I get the "Downloading Windows 10" message.

The easiest way to stop a Windows 10 download is to grab this program
    GWX Control Panel http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/
It doesn't matter if it is the portable version or the installed version.

Read this so you know what sort of screen you will see when you run it
    http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/

It will identify what settings lead to a Win 10 download, what files are already on the computer, and enables you to monitor if MS changes any of the settings.

  47. MaxTurner

As long as the registry entry is set correctly even though you see that 'downloading windows 10' message it is not actually happening because the reg entry stops it. You will then find only the other updates will be applied.

  48. petejc

    petejc Private E-2

Thanks MaxTurner. That helps me believe that I wasn't actually installing Win 10.
But I followed plodr's instructions and ran GWX Control Panel to disable everything I could. When I click Install I no longer get the "Downloading Windows 10". It just says Downloading Updates.

That makes me feel even better.
    Thanks for all the help.
