I have an old Emachines Model D3415 32bit desktop that immediately powers itself off when I turn it on. Prior to this it was working just fine. The monitor powers on and is working. My concern is that I still have a lot of sensitive documents stored on the pc and if I cannot get it to power on how can I destroy/delete all these documents? Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Eldon, thank you very much for your reply. However, I have no idea how to "remove the HDD and connect it to an IDE/SATA to USB connector and plug it in to a working pc" I have a HP 2000 Notebook pc and don't know if the XP HDD can be connected to it. Are there any detailed instructions/diagrams? on how I can go about doing this?

    Here's the user guide https://www.manualowl.com/p/eMachines/D3415/Manual/66922
starting on page 46, it shows you how to open the case. Follow that and take out the hard drive.

    You buy something like this
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

You find the correct connection on the Vantac unit and plug in the hard drive you've removed from the eMachine. Then you plug the Vantac unit into a USB port on your HP laptop.

You should get a found new hardware popup and Windows will assign the drive a letter.

Open Windows Explorer and search what is on the attached hard drive.

I forgot to mention, have the laptop booted up before you attach the Vantac with the hard drive unit.

Some computers will stall at booting up if a USB device is attached.

plodr...many thamks for your reply. I will try my best to follow your suggestion and see if that will indeed allow me to delete those documents on the XP HDD.
