    OK,

This one has me completely stumped.

I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 on and acer aspire V5 laptop. (I have installed MANY times on other pcs and laptops.)

Everything went smooth. (I did have to use the win-F10 "clean" method to get the HD ready) regardless..

After I had completed the setup steps and connected to the Internet everything looked normal.

    Until I rebooted...

Now I have this insane glitch type effect. I can't even describe it properly... It's like the screen is duplicated and ghosting over top of itself off centre..

    I have tried:
    - rebooting
    - uninstalling display drivers
    - swearing
    - googling
    - large doses of caffeine and nicotine.

    I'm completely lost...

    Please send help.

What graphics does the laptop have?

If possible try on an external monitor via HDMI port. I do this on occasion with laptops and the 2 HD TVs in the house, and run a desktop in that fashion always. Just configured sound to use the HDMI line as well for using TV speakers in place of PC speakers.

    Ok,

So I plugged in another monitor through the HDMI port and it works fine. So does that mean the Graphics card is blown?

Also.. how on earth is that possible by installing a new OS? All through the install and the setup process it was fine. right up until I got to the desktop for the first time.

    Perhaps it's a driver issue?

I seriously CANNOT afford to be buying someone a new Laptop right now.. I just can't

    **SOLVED**

So.. I plugged in another monitor, and it was fine. Upgraded to Windows 10 and all seems to be working as intended.

Never mind.. Literally 30 seconds after I typed that reply it started doing the same thing.

If I plug in my 55' TV right beside it via HDMI it's 100% fine.

If I understand correctly what you did, the second monitor working fine would indicate there is no problem with your graphics card.

It seems to be a little confusing what you have done. You installed Windows 8.1 and first experienced the problem. Was 8.1 the original OS on the PC?

Since you ran a clean installation of 8.1 before upgrading (and I don't see that you downloaded and installed the graphics driver from the graphics manufacturer or from your PC manufacturer), the graphics are being rendered by the Windows native graphics driver. This could be the source of your problem. If you can reply to Eldon't request for what type of graphics you have on the PC, someone can maybe hook you up with a graphics driver. There is a chance this will solve the issue.

Do you know the specific model number of the acer aspire v5? There are numerous versions listed on the Acer site...

    Thank you for responding.

According to Speccy it's Intel HD Graphics and that's all it says.

The thing that is driving me bonkers is that during the whole install process everything is fine... and the fact that it works fine if you plug another monitor into it.

Do you think that the screen is broken? (The thing is.. if I try to boot from CD as if I was going to reinstall the OS.. it's fine.. just as soon as I get to the desktop it's all crazy.)

This bit of information seems to indicate that it is definitely driver related and not screen related. The Windows installation disk menus are designed to look good with Windows native graphics, because when you install, your PC's graphics driver is not available. Windows uses its own graphics until you install the graphics driver for your particular hardware.

Really need to get the full model name of the Acer, so you can get the correct driver. Try this. In the search box, type msinfo32. Click on the process that comes up. On System Summary look for system model. Maybe all the information will be there...
