I used Windows Media Player to rip some CD cda's to wma's. Now I want to convert them to mp4's. Any recommendations on what I should use?

Are you sure about the mp4 file extension?
Only Nero uses the mp4 file extension for audio files.
Technically, mp4 and m4a audio files are the same, meaning Windows Media Player will play them.

Also, if you're converting audio, it's best to rip to wav.

Well, actually the progression here has been as follows: I downloaded some YouTube videos. I thought they used to be flv's, but to my surprise, when I downloaded these, they were mp4's. And as such, I could pull them into a Blogger website and play them from there no problem. So I wanted to add some tracks from CD's to this bunch, but you can't just copy cda's and have them play on a computer, so I ripped them using what I had, which was Windows Media Player, which ripped them to wma's, which Blogger won't take. So I thought the simplest thing to do was to just convert them from wma's to mp4's. But if you've got a better idea, please tell all.

Rip the audio CDs to mp3.

But I do know Blogger won't take mp3

    What formats does blogger support?

Well, I still have some songs I had downloaded from YouTube a couple years ago, and they're flv's, and Blogger takes them, so that's mp4 and flv. But I'll bet there are more formats it takes. Give me a few minutes, and I'll look into it...

    Blogger doesn't support audio files.
    There's a workaround but it's a looong process.

I mean, if worst came to worst, couldn't I just play the cda's out of a speaker and re-record it in some format that either Blogger would take or could relatively easily be converted to a format it would take? There should be very little degradation in fidelity if I used decent equipment.

    Here's a sample file.
Extract it from the archive, and see if Blogger will play it.

When I saw it was an mp4 file, I thought Blogger would play it, since Blogger supports mp4's, and I've done this successfully dozens of times. And the file did play on my computer. But when I uploaded it, it uploaded per se successfully, but in then subsequently processing the video, Blogger generated an error. I tried it twice and got the same result. I guess you're probably not playing with Blogger so you didn't try it, but that's the result I got. Needless to say, I don't know what the problem was.

So I guess you just made that mp4 from an audio file? If so, what format was the source audio file in?

  19. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

The problem is it's an audio file, even though the file ext. is mp4 - as explained in post #2.
    Yes.
    mp3, which is irrelevant.

Both worked! What was different about this mp4 from the previous one?

I will help you. But you need to work with me. Go back and read all my posts.
    They started out as MP3s.

    This is what I did.
I used Express Animate from NCH Software*. I imported the mp3 audio file, and an image, and saved it as a video file - wmv. And then as an mp4 file.
Plain and simple. You could do the same with Windows Movie Maker. And if you don't have it...

    * Express Animate is the only video software I currently have in Windows 7. I tried it, it worked, you're happy, let's have a drink.

OK, got WMM, it doesn't look intuitive enough for me to instantly figure it out, so I'll study it, so assuming it can handle wma and/or cda audio files, I should be in business. Thanks a lot for going to the trouble to figure this out for me, Eldon.

I rounded up some CDs and used Windows Media Player to rip some songs off them to mp3's and imported them into Windows Movie Maker, but I couldn't figure out how to convert them to wmv, mp4 or anything else.

I tried to find out by researching it online, and got nowhere, so I posted a thread "Convert mp3 audio to mp4 video using Windows Movie Maker?" at c|net Audio & Video Software forum, but no luck.

Does anybody know how to do this using Windows Movie Maker?

    1. Which Windows Movie Maker are you using?

    2. Which Windows are you using?

    3. You can't convert mp3 audio to mp4 video.
You have to use an audio file and an image file to make a video/movie.

I made 2 more sample videos using Windows Movie Maker 2.1 in Windows XP.
Sample_4 uses a wma song & and a bmp image.
    Sample_5 uses a mp3 song & and a jpeg image.
    Try them.
And kindly respond to 1 & 2. Then you'll be making audio movies in no time.

Both of the samples you just provided worked.

    Two more questions...
Where did you get WMM 6.0?
Does it look like this image?
    WMM 2.1.jpg

  31. Skullduggery's Dupe

    Skullduggery's Dupe Master Sergeant

I'm not sure, but I think I downloaded it from http://www.windows-movie-maker.org

The installer I downloaded is wmm6_win7_64bit.msi

No, it doesn't look like that image. With the project I saved in it, it looks like the attached file. Without the project saved in it, it looked exactly the same accept that there was no list of songs. Don't tell me I've been duped again by malware? I haven't noticed any problem since I downloaded it a few days ago. But I'll run Avira and MB right away.

Maybe I should just use Express Animate myself, whu'dya think?
Maybe we should just do that right now, software issue or no...

P.S. Does my WMM look like just a different version than yours, or do you think it's bogus? BTW, I didn't find any malware after downloading this WMM.

Attention Eldon, did you download Express Animate from here?

    Express Animate Software

If this is a safe place to download it from, I'll do so and give it a whirl...

    No you didn't.
That link is for WMM 2.1 which dates back to Windows XP.
I gave you a link for WMM 6.0 in post #25.
The site includes helpfull info for users of WMM.
    You could do that.
The reason I didn't recommend Express Animate is the default lenght of the movie is 30 seconds. You'll have to change it every time to match the lenght of the song.
    I don't think it's bogus.
Click Help > About Windows Movie Maker and you'll see which version you have.
Yes I did, and yes the site is safe.
But you can also get it from here.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/express_animate.html

Pay attention during the installation - you'll be offered other software from NCH.
I always disconnect from the internet prior to installing software.
