Hi all!! I have a small gift shop and I've been thinking of using a credit card machine for easier transactions. Can you suggest a good company the offers credit card machine? Thanks!

Pretty much any credit card company will let you rent or buy a machine, especially if your store has an account with them already (some may offer them free, you'd have to check). Are you talking a terminal on the desk, or are you small enough you can do a credit card swipe using a phone or tablet? Square and PayPal and...shoot, one other one I can't remember...offer devices that attach to a mobile device. The gadgets themselves are free, and they take a percentage of each transaction as a fee.

Sgt. Tibbs has pretty much summed it up.

Financial organisations (e.g. banks, etc) should be able to assist and guide you no matter what your business size. Check out their EFTPOS (electronic funds transfer at point of sale) terminals for processing card payments. You should be able to choose from a basic low cost terminal and a full service integrated terminal for detailed reporting. There should be product range to give you complete access to a range of extras such as Pre-Authorisation, Customer Preferred Currency and Extra Services.

There are also some iphone and smartphone apps for accepting credit and debit card payments using a secure card reader. So you may need to consider these type of transactions also.

Some EFTPOS terminals may even have a “pay wave” reader for some credit card and/or iphone and smartphone users (as we have here). Something else for you to consider if viable for your size business.

Properly investigate financial institutions to see what they have to offer which suits your business needs then make sure you properly read and understand the Terms and Conditions (Ts & Cs) before signing anything!

    Good luck!

    Cheers

More importantly, they meet the security requirements the credit card companies demand everyone to meet. Or at least, everyone who wants to do business with them. It's probably a good idea to read up on PCI DSS compliance and how it applies to small gift shops - you don't want to find out the hard way that you broke their data security rules and be hit by a substantial fine and potentially be banned from doing business with, for example, VISA. The advantage of a device like Square is that they've done all that work and meet the requirements.
