I've never noticed that on a computer, regardless of how much RAM. It scrolls just like any other website. On my phone, however, it's anybody's guess how Facebook is going to work. That's because of how the app works as opposed to anything to do with the device, though.

I guess I'm more stuck on you looking to Facebook for news. Or Reddit, for that matter. Those are not news sources; they're social media.

Facebook always seems to stutter for me, especially when I am deeply down the news feed... but then... it could be to do with Firefox too, as that is the browser I use all the time.

I am now utterly unclear as to what your point is in this thread. Are you talking about a problem using Facebook as it relates to a computer, or are you talking about a problem using Facebook as it relates to mental capacity?

I don't use the Facebook app on my smart phone anymore, because I noticed the volume on my MP3's did not go loud enough after I installed the Facebook app on it. Can't say I miss it on my phone either.

Facebook is a very wealthy website at serves up ads that posters actually call up on their own. Who ever created the programming for it was very wise and probably made very lot of money. Unfortunately posters are not getting paid for their post (content and googleability) and with every post the program finds ads to server the poster with ads related to their content. In other words .. the more you post the more ads you get and with ads comes slower computer speeds. As for dumbing people down .. well there really is only so much you can post about ... and people just want to be acknowledged even if it's a pic of what they ate, what they bought or what they are thinking (originality does not apply). BTW ... hello everyone and hope things have been well. Just popped in to peek around and say hello.

Think social media now really depends on how quick your internet is as they are not like simple SMS they can be media rich which will slow things down, I also thing in some cases and FB is the amount of new items like "trending" do I really need to know these things, sponsored adverts like current one I get is "meet your girlfriend" well duh if she is my girlfriend I have met her already! Not been on FB that much in the past 5yrs or so, so much took me 3 goes to remember my password.

I don't see much of a 'slowness' problem with FB on an old Vista box with 3gb ram. Using browser extensions to limit things like ads and script generally help.
As for the dumbing down issue, it is highly debatable whether FB is any more influential in that than any other form of media - printed or online.
Two American scholars - Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky - wrote on that issue nearly 30 years ago in 'Manufacturing Consent'
which is as relevant today as it was then, and with the rise of 'Celebrity' - for celebrity sake - you can argue that influences peoples thoughts and views too.

Just another tool. Dumb people hit themselves with a hammer, give them a bigger hammer and they just do more damage. Creative people excel to great heights.

I guess it is like a big magnifier.

As far as speeds, I recently dumped cable and only use the phone. When my bandwidth gets throttled, there are sites that just won't load they are so bloated and full of spyware. Google gives an option for slow connection, works great, so one has to wonder why all the bloating? (metrics, snooping, tracking, trending etc.)

Faster and faster connections to serve up more and more. Like going to an all you can eat buffet, load up the plate, it's the same price... Throttle back the speeds and I am way more selective about what gets served.

Many ISPs throttle the bandwidth at certain times and sometimes when users are streaming or downloading from torrent sites. Other ISPs don't. But the bloat is almost always script from third party sites and that is easily dealt with using adblocking and script blocking browser extensions. It's quite simple. I'm not seeing FB use more than 20-30mb of Ram when open.

I have CyberFox which works very well 98% of the time. And loads all the fire fox add-ons as well.I find that firefox sucks being blunt about that one.But it seems that others like to try there hand at making it better.Cyberfox seems to be the best one so far.

And to the Op There is one main reason why Facebook is sucking up resources. All of the dam videos and GIF's that auto play suck up a lot of juice.

Using such things like Ad blockers and tab pop up blockers and flash blockers will help tremendously.

All you have to do is disable autoplay and that problem is fixed. I haven't seen anything autoplay in a couple of years.

True but it auto plays in the backround It's called plugin container.exe that is what sucks up most of your resources. It can not be disaabled now in firefox be leave me i have tried to.When it first came out that plugin was easy to disable. But now if you disable it in firefox it self it will not allow you to watch any videos at all.I have tried over and over to fix this one major issue they added. So i switched browser.Firefox is nothing but a resources hog now it's all most bloated. You can not even clean the cache out correctly any more. You have to use third party tools to do this now.

I haven't used Firefox in at least five years, mostly because of the resource hog issue. Had no idea! I just know that I disabled autoplay on both the app and via its website through my account settings and I don't even see .GIF files unless I click on them. Works like a charm!
