How can I block Windows 10 from automatically installing? I have a small Aspire workbook with Windows 7 Basic. I tried windows 10 a while back. This computer is too small for it. Everything ran awfully slow until it would just lock up completely. I lost most of my files and programs converting back to windows 7. Windows 10 tries to auto install every time I use this computer.

GWX Control Panel is all you need. It removes anything Win 10 related and ensures it doesn't come back.

Thanks. I just finished running it and will see what happens.

I discovered this evening after updating two systems for the March updates that the GWX app had been reinstalled on both. See HERE

The registry fix to physically and totally disable a Win 10 update is 100% effective. You don't need anything else. And it can be easily reversed if a Win 7 or 8/8.1 user changes their mind before July 29th this year.

I run GWX Control Panel but KB3035583 showed up in the list again. I have to hide it even with GWX CP installed GWX CP doesn'r react until the da*n update downloads.

Just went to test this on my Win 8.1 VM and it turns out I had previously implemented it, but when I check again for updates KB3035583 turns up again (updates on that system are set to notify only). I believe that article to be quite old now Max and with GWX Control Panel not being 100% effective either it looks like we are still looking for a fully effective block to W10.

It worked fine on 2 laptops and a PC all running 8.1 until I updated one of them to 10 just before Xmas, and the other two early in the New Year.
I don't see how Windows Update can override a standard unambiguous Registry key that actually blocks an OS upgrade. In fact, it can't. And unless a user actually allows that KB3035583 it can't do anything. And part of the process of not allowing Windows 10 is not to allow that KB to install, which was always easy to do in 7 or 8.

That's what I do. In any version of Windows prior to Win 10, I always set Windows Update to check for updates, notify me and let me choose whether to download and install them. Every Patch Tuesday since KB3035583 reared it's ugly head, I check through the list of updates and if it's there, I hide it. I'm already running 2 versions of Windows 10. I don't need any more.
