    Hi,
Wishing to replace my GH22NS40 LG optical drive which has 5x, 12xPCAV DVD-RAM read speed, I can at best get only 5x if purchasing Bluray. LG say they have to make compromises if designing bluray, so take us backwards 200% for read speed . I cant believe I have to drop the idea of progress with such a bombshell discovery. Video transfer from DVD-RAM is slow enough as it is but to go from 12x to 5x is sheer nuts.

I am assuming mine is running at 12x, but with spec saying 5x, 12x PCAV just what is the drive running at ?

However with bluray saying 2x 3x 5x CLV I would get 5x at best, might get 2x, hells bells...how can i make judgment on this ?

I wanted to keep my silent play technology and also have bluray capability.

So reluctantly forgetting bluray and hopes of writing bluray from my HD camcorder I must go for a standard dvd unit, however the LG website for such doesnt portray the silent play and other features, just lists specs which dont cover such aspects.

Can anyone suggest a silent playing reliable optical drive, bluray with DVDRAM 12x, or failing that silent running dvd that has DVD-RAM 12x read. It has to be promoted as silent playing as what is silent to one user is audible to another. Unless you know for sure its very quiet.

What is the model number of the drive you you are considering?
My CD/DVD drive has 11 different maximum speeds - it depends on what type of disc I have loaded.
    Double-check whether the 2x 3x 5x refer to DVD-RAM or BD.

    Hi,
LG said to consider the WH14NS40

The specs for it say for Read:
    DVD-RAM 2x, 3x, 5x CLV
my LG GH22NS40 has this: read DVD-RAM (ver2.0 and higher) 5x, 12x PCAV

they couldnt suggest any standard drives as none appeared to have Silent Play Technology, but the webpages for them didnt seem designed to even show such features, maybe because they didnt have them. Only two blurays have that anyway.

    Hi,
DVD-RAM is the suggested way on the Panny to transfer video to PC, unit cost me a LOT of money a few years ago so cannot change that as well to the latest that uses powered usb HDD until it dies and even then I dont have the money to do so.
Acquiring a bluray reader writer for the pc I now hope to go over to transferring recordings made on my panny bluray tv recorder/HDD to PC using Bluray as it saves splitting a 2hr movie in half. Panasonic cant promise it will work though.
I need quiet running though and being UK I am advised to buy from UK, voltages might be wrong if buy USA hardware someone said in PC world, and customs charges and vat on goods, custom fees and on carriage by Parcel Farce etc, but UK doesnt have quiet drives advertised for sale.
Asus quietrack BC12B1St for example at Acousticpc.com not available here. Only a Pioneer BDR-209DBK and thats the only one I can find. UK I am told dont count, USA and Europe have quiet bluray as they are bigger markets.
