Where Are These Files That Fdm Is Opening?

FDM is somewhat misnamed. It doesn't just manage DOWNLOADING files, it also manages OPENING them.

Sometimes when I tell FDM to open a file, it just does. But sometimes it says it's opening them, but I'll be darned if I can find them being opened ANYWHERE. Where ARE they...?!

Some cases for me like a zip file it will briefly flash by and that's it. Because I don't have a default file association for zip's. In that case I instead use 'open file location'. Once there I'll right click and use the context menu to select my archiver. Maybe it happens to you as not having a default for that particular file type.

I don't have that program but when you downloaded it, it probably sets itself as your default program. I'd open the program and open it's preferences/settings menu and see what it says. It's probably set as your default and saves it somewhere in there. If you don't want it saving to there, you should set the default download area/folder within your browser you use.

Sorry, that's what the folks here at MG called it when they recommended it to me, and you can download it here, so I thought all the old hands here would know what it was.

I'm old. I do not install any download manager so I was not aware of this. Since I've been on broadband starting in 2004, I have no need of any such software. With dialup - yes.

In the main window instead of double clicking a file - right click and select "open folder". It will go to the folder with the file highlighted. Then you can see in the address bar at top where it is.

Unless there's something I don't know about, what you're talking about is just for SAVING files. I'm talking about OPENING files.

I guess we're talking about the same FDM. Mine doesn't have 'open' anywhere. I figured you meant when right clicking - and there is a choice to 'launch file' that that was what you meant. When I click that choice with a file that has no association with any program, it won't launch (open). But on right clicking and I select 'open folder' it will go to that folder where it was downloaded to. And the file I was looking at in the FDM main window will be highlighted. Then I can choose what program I want to open it with. While I'm in that folder I can also see at the top of the screen where it went to when I downloaded it. It has already been saved. And similar files I download later will be in the same folder.

This is the window that appears in Free Download Manager version 3.9.6 build 1614 when you single-left-click on an email attachment. I'm showing this window the way it appears when you're selecting "open file", rather than "save file".

Okay. I see now. I don't ever use that area but I do know that sometimes the file that gets 'grabbed for download' is just a url or a php or some other file type used by the website and it's not the one of real interest. It happens to me sometimes here on MG when I try to view an attachment from a post and it doesn't get the real attachment but instead a 'php' or 'xml' or other . And I have no way of opening that file type.

I'm just trying to open a jpg (for example), and FDM seems to be complying with my command to open the file, but then nothing happens. I guess I didn't explicitly state that before. So my question is, what the hell...?!

My guess is that at that time FDM isn't showing the actual jpg in it's download window but an address on the webpage to where the jpg is actually located. It's a 'php' or other webpage item pointing to the jpg. If you would try to save it at that point you wouldn't get the jpg. Look in your screeshot. It doesn't say jpg in the window. It says"email.getattachment.cgi?act=118" and there may be more outside the window that we can't see.

FDM opens MOST image files just fine. As I understand you, you're saying that some images aren't REALLY attached to the email message they accompany in the "regular" way, but rather only via a pointer, and FDM can't handle that. Have I got that right?

I think that's along the right line. Same as sometimes here I get the attachment from a post and sometimes I get a dunce. Sometimes on second try I get the attachment.

Maybe closer is that FDM can handle the "pointer" it's just you have no way to display it. I don't use the function but I believe FDM can download whole web pages. So I would guess it would be able to get anything there.

Well, I'm not sure where that leaves me in terms of finding a solution...

Give an example of a page and I'll see what I get from it. Not an email page. Any other example?

I guess I've encountered this pretty much just in dealing with email attachments. Let me think about it and get back to you.
