This announcement from Nasa today is remarkable. I hope that in my life time we come to learn that extra-terrestrial life exists.

Do you think they would feel the same way about us? Interesting subject really.

I suspect that if an extra terrestrial civilization had the technology to travel to our system they might be indifferent towards us. Agreed it is a fascinating subject. I love this stuff.

History has lessons to teach us
    about first encounters
    between civilizations.
As a rule, the less advanced civilization
    is either exterminated or enslaved.
I'm thinking of Pizarro and the Incas,
    Columbus and the Native Americans...
    The list goes on.

Well said. I am hopeful that a highly advanced extra terrestrial civilization will be enlightened, and not predatory. They may find us oddly amusing. Hopefully it is not a War of the Worlds scenario.

    huh?
    enlightened?
    what's that mean?
enlightened to hang with us and not just take?

yes, not like like Independance Day. where they wanted our planet/resources.
or the matrix where they just wanted our planet
    Every mammal on this planet
    instinctively develops a natural
    equilibrium with the surrounding
environment. But you humans do not.
You move to an area and you multiply
    and multiply until every natural
resource is consumed and the only
way you can survive is to spread to
    another area.

    american indians, are amusing...?

I did not mean to come off like an azz...I dont understand what englightened means in the context you are using it?
does an enlightened person not eat meat?

No. I meant that a super advanced space faring civilization may find us amusing.

I'm using enlightened as in hopefully the aliens are peaceful, filled with wisdom, and compassion. If they survived the atomic age hopefully they're not killers when they make first contact with us.

Odds are they will be as animals to us or we as animals to them.

  11. hitest

    hitest Staff Sergeant

Agreed. There's a chance that they'll be predatory. I believe that Stephen Hawking also shares your point of view. I'm hopeful that our first contact will be with a benign species.

I see, so you think aliens will be like star trek:tng and arent going to be out looking for more resources for their own world, but out looking to be amused by the 70% of obese humans running around, kicking each other in the groins and not want to kill us all and take our stuff

yeah, I don't think so...if they come, the will take what we have and that's it.

You're probably right, but, there's no way to know. It is interesting to discuss these ideas!
I would love to see confirmation of microbial life on Mars. I suspect that Mars will be the first extra terrestrial planet that will prove that we are not the only planet that has life.

  14. Just Playin

Yes, but not exactly what I meant. They will either be so far ahead of us, it will be comparable to the gap between us and mice or vice versa. They may be benign but may not see us as comparably intelligent. They may see us as pets, pests or possibly food if they even take notice of us.

and since I know most zoos do anal probling, likely there'll be a lot of that...

Interesting topic and what could happen if we do meet an alien race is open to ....... basically fresh air, we do not know how they will perceive us or us them, could be fine but could be like the movies and nasty. I do think if we have not already, need to plan for such a visit, how you plan for the unknown is a crapshoot.

    movies?
no, movies make money just like "NEWS at 10pm" by selling shocking tales of bad news.

Our only hope would be being classified as an "endangered species" by the more advanced race. At least we could keep our planet.

    extra solar planets?
An exoplanet or extrasolar planet is a planet that orbits a star other than the Sun. Over 3000 exoplanets have been discovered since 1988 (more specifically, 3412 planets in 2554 planetary systems, including 578 multiple planetary systems, have been confirmed, as of 23 May 2011

    yeah, maybe
but you mean life like bacteria, or single cellular life?
    or like like bears/mammals
    or intelligent life like humans?

but I think we should focus more on home than looking up at stars/planets that are so far away we could never reach them in our or grandkids lifetimes

    bad pun?

we can stil find these planets,,,,that we cant visist
but we will go somewhere if we focus on our own planet

this is akin to KNOWING what's wrong with your friend's relationship AND how to fix it, but your relationship is being ingored and going to hell..if you spent time working on your OWN relations, and your friends, then life would be better for you, eh?

The lessons learned from others' relationships can be applied to one's own.;)

The knowledge and discoveries that we have made exploring near earth space have benefited us immensely in ways even their proponents never envisioned, let alone the naysayers.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. I fervently disagree. Our place in the cosmos, our religions, and philosophies will get a healthy shake-up if we discover that life exists on a different planet.
It will be wonderful to learn that we are not alone.

While NASA didn't 'invent' all of these technologies, they did play a role in perfecting them.

pretty much what I was lookin' for.
    thanks
Here are the top 15 space spin-offs:

    1. CAT scanner: this cancer-detecting technology was first used to find imperfections in space components.

    2. Computer microchip: modern microchips descend from integrated circuits used in the Apollo Guidance Computer.

    3. Cordless tools: power drills and vacuum cleaners use technology designed to drill for moon samples.

    4. Ear thermometer: a camera-like lens that detects infrared energy we feel as heat was originally used to monitor the birth of stars.

    5. Freeze-dried food: this reduces food weight and increases shelf life without sacrificing nutritional value.

    6. Insulation: home insulation uses reflective material that protects spacecraft from radiation.

    7. Invisible braces: teeth-straightening is less embarrassing thanks to transparent ceramic brace brackets made from spacecraft materials.

    8. Joystick: this computer gaming device was first used on the Apollo Lunar Rover.

    9. Memory foam: created for aircraft seats to soften landing, this foam, which returns to its original shape, is found in mattresses and shock absorbing helmets.

    10. Satellite television: technology used to fix errors in spacecraft signals helps reduce scrambled pictures and sound in satellite television signals.

    11. Scratch resistant lenses: astronaut helmet visor coating makes our spectacles ten times more scratch resistant.

    12. Shoe insoles: athletic shoe companies adapted space boot designs to lessen impact by adding spring and ventilation.

    13. Smoke detector: Nasa invented the first adjustable smoke detector with sensitivity levels to prevent false alarms.

    14. Swimsuit: Nasa used the same principles that reduce drag in space to help create the world’s fastest swimsuit for Speedo, rejected by some professionals for giving an unfair advantage.

    15. Water filter: domestic versions borrow a technique Nasa pioneered to kill bacteria in water taken into space.
