Just when navigating the threads on the forum noticed it but never took noticed of the RSS icon lighting up when you hover over a forum title area like Software, so just thought as I used to use RSS many years back, but dont now, how many of you still use it?

For those that answer dont know what it is then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS

Not only do I not still use them, I've never used them. Tried it once a hundred years ago, and saw no point.

Not everyday but often. The feeds let me read a headline and decide with stories I'm interest in enough to check out. Mostly because of using metered wireless. I do use abc news rss and U.S. news and World Report. Also I have "Feed Demon" installed on this '8 comp. It allows for a wide range of topics /subdivisions. One of my email sources has an extensive selection of rss feeds. I can scan the items with a lot lower hit to my gbytes than loading ever site.

I've always seen them around but never knew what they were or cared enough to look them up and use them. I guess I knew the general idea of them, but not the specifics.

Those are both fair points, I think its a Marmite/Vegemite type thing you either like it or don't. I think it was great to get quick snapshots of new news or articles threads you wanted to follow but wanted to pick and choose what to read, but more so when internet was slow, but these days most of use can eat data up.

On my old phone, I had an RSS reader that let me stay up to date about the blogs and websites I follow. On my current phone, the web browser is so much better than it was that I no longer feel a need for the RSS.

I am a former journalist and RSS feeds were a major competitive advantage, and still
are, and a little known tool. Feedly, which I was fortunate to obtain a lifetime Pro membership
for, is a wonderful RSS tool for desktop and mobile. Too bad more people don't appreciate what
    RSS can do!

Hi dxace1, I can imagine in the press RSS is a great tool, but I can see that and you may enlighten me in that Twitter may have taken over from RSS as the live news media tool?
BTW is that the White House in the background of your use pic?

What's important to understand is that unlike Twitter, which often runs extremely fast depending on news flow, snd can be cluttered, RSS allows you to link directly to specific parts of numerous sites to monitor content, It's like having numerous always updating newspapers and you can quickly assess what you want to read in more depth. Yes, that is the White House in the background.

I agree with you assessment and RSS is a great too and more in that Twitter is a bit of a clone of IRC but not as good.

Not massively scientific with 13 voters but 69% for not using RSS is a big margin, likely its a dead media over Twitter as a social comms tool these days.
What could be the next tool for keeping us up to date with news globally and news we can custom to our needs, I just find that news is fragmented to a specific tool or app, not easily compensable, I think the latest Win10 News app is not so bad as you can customise it more now,

I've personally never saw the need for RSS feeds. Then again, I don't see the need, personally, for twitter.

I read the RSS feeds of news and blog sites, but I've never tried it on a forum. Has anyone used them? what's it like?

Being an old fart, I have never used RSS feeds or Twitter either, for that matter. I still use the phone and text and email for social contacts.
But I love lurking here and observing how the intelligent folks roll.
