I have an avi and an identically named srt file in the same folder, but when I open AviAddXSubs, select the avi, and click Start, all I get is, "Failed, video stream not found." What's wrong with the damn thing?

Does the avi play in MPC-HC?

    Yep, perfectly.

    Ok.
    Are you doing this:

Just tried dragging and dropping. No difference. The name of the video still appeared in the file name box just like when I selected it by browsing for it, and I was still told video stream not found.

I suspect the video stream isn't supported by AVIAddXSubs.
Do you have a small srt file you can zip and upload? Then I can try with 1 or 2 avi files.

    Sure. Here's a test srt.

Well I get exactly the same - Video stream not found.
I tried different avi files and none are working.

Well that's a ****ty program then. Thanks for trying.

It isn't listed. I'm trying to create a file that'll work on a PS3. AviAddXSubs came up first when I googled ps3 srt

Didn't get the results I wanted. Hoping to eventually find something that'll either softcode or hardcode an external subtitle track into a video so that the ps3 will be able to read the subtitles.

Thanks. I'll try out Any Video Converter. I've had Freemake for a while but for some reason it's started crashing on me every time I try to use it. It loads a video ok but when I try selecting a format, it just closes automatically.

Nope, Any Video Converter's not an option. The buttons/boxes for unselecting the bundled software were invisible. I could either click Next or Cancel. I chose Cancel.

How is WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe working for you?
I added your test srt file to a vob video file in the program, converted it to wmv, and it came out perfect.

Unfortunately, it started out very fast and got to 10% very quickly, and said there were only 20 minutes left to wait, and then it got stuck at 13% and told me I had to wait 8 hours, so I gave up on it.

I found out from another forum that the problem with AviAddXSubs is that the video must be encoded with either DivX or Xvid. The video I was trying with was H264. Once I tried with an Xvid video, it worked fine. Except it only managed to create a .divx copy of the video. I couldn't get the subtitles to work.

Is this with WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe?

  25. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

No, like I said, I gave up on that. I used another program to encode a video with Xvid, then I put that video into AviAddXSubs and got a .divx copy out, but the subtitles wouldn't display.

  26. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

Why? Because it said 8 hours? I do not believe it will take that long even if the video's lenght is 8 hours.
WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe is almost identical to WinX DVD Ripper Platinum. As a test, I used the latter to rip a copy-protected DVD of 132 minutes in just 23 minutes. And the resulting file has the same properties as the original DVD.

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Well I'll give it another shot then. I just assumed if it said 8 hours, it meant it. But can you try AviAddXSubs again with an Xvid encoded video to see what result you get and if you can get subtitles to show?

    I'll give it a try.

Done. And the subtitles from your test file shows.
Sometimes we overlook the obvious... I just did.
The video and srt file must have the same name and be in the same folder.

I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I clicked the avi, held down ctrl, clicked the srt (both in the same folder with the exact same name), and dragged them over to AviAddXSubs. The name of the avi appeared in the file name box, followed by a |, followed by the name of the srt. I clicked start, and in 2 minutes, a .divx copy of the video was created. Yet when I played this version in MPC-HC, I could NOT get the subtitles to show. I checked under Subtitle Track, Enable was ticked, and the track S: Subtitle - el-xx;02 (xsub) was selected, but the subtitles just would not show. If I selected the original srt, they'd show, but not otherwise. And what's worse, I copied the .divx video to a usb drive and plugged it into my ps3 to see if my ps3 could read the subtitles, and it couldn't even detect the video, let alone the subtitles.

    This is what I found...
    1. You only need to add the divx file to AviAddXSubs.
    2. In MPC-BE 1.4.4 the subtitles show, but they are below the video. See screenshot.
    3. In Windows Media Player 12, Windows Media Centre & XnView (Windows 7), the subtitles do not show.
    4. Your PS3 wont detect the video because it's a divx.

Frankly, I wouldn't bother trying to use AviAddXSubs.

Sorry, some of that is very confusing. What do you mean I only need to add the divx file to AviAddXSubs. It's AviAddXSubs that creates the divx file, from the avi file.

In the screenshot you posted, it's the original srt track that's selected, not the track that AviAddXSubs creates. As I said, I can see the srt track fine. It's the other one that won't show, unless that's the one you meant, but that's not the one selected in that screenshot.

And if the ps3 won't detect the video because it's a divx, then why does AviAddXSubs come up top whenever I google about trying to get the ps3 to read subtitles?

What way would you recommend to get the ps3 to read external subtitles, other than hardcoding them? Because if I hardcode them into a video of the same quality, it's gonna be much bigger than the original. And if I hardcode them into a video that's about the same size, the quality isn't gonna be nearly as good.

This is what I meant when I posted you only need to add the divx file - which has an avi extension. Point is, you don't need to also add the srt file.
No it's not. It's the srt file you sent me.
Surely you don't expect me to answer for what Google dishes up...

The Sony PS3 does play divx files, but they should have an avi extension. I changed the file ext. to avi, I converted the divx to wmv, and in neither case did the subtitles show.
See if you can find something over here.

    Ah, OK. I understand now.

This is really confusing me. "No it's not." No it's not what? I said that, in the screenshot, it's the srt file that's selected. And you're saying that no it's not, that it's the srt file.

    Damn, this is frustrating.

OK, I'll have a look at that. Thanks.

The srt file in the screenshot is the file you sent me. I added it to a video with no subtitles, using AviAddXSubs. But as I explained, they only show in MPC-BE.

I used WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe* to add your test.srt file to a video. I saved it as a WMV file and uploaded it to OneDrive. Your Sony PS3 will play it.

I'm messaging you a link to download the video. Try it in your PS3, and also look over here.
    http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html

*I suggest you practise with this software using a short video clip and a test srt file. Look at the settings to get the desired result.

Thanks. I'll experiment further with WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe but right now, problem solved on the AviAddXSubs front. Turns out the ps3 CAN read a video with the .divx extension BUT it hides videos like that like easter eggs on a dvd. You have to select the usb drive in the video menu, then press the triangle button on the controller, select Display All, and the video will show! I was able to play it too, WITH subtitles! I have to do some trial and errors with the positioning of the subtitles. AviAddXSubs, by default, places them in the exact centre of the screen. I have to move them down by clicking the tab in AviAddXSubs that's marked Configuration 1, and in the Subtitle Position box, change the Vertical Position from the default 450 to, I think, 600. That should do it. I think they'll look fine then.

    Good news at last.
When I added your test.srt file to a 00:01:06 video clip, it took 1 second to complete in AviAddXSubs.

Yeah, it's extremely fast. Just did a 52 minute video in 2 minutes.

    I almost forgot...
Also have a look at the free WinX DVD Author.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/winx_dvd_author.html

You should really consider using an all-in-one video editing program with which you can do everything. The downside is even the best free ones have a steep learning curve.

Thanks! I'll check the DVD Author out.

When I'm doing video editing, I generally use AviUtl.

Forgot to mention that AviAddXSubs didn't allow the value 600 in the Vertical Position box. 550 was a little too high so I settled for 575.
