Should I Upgrade To Windows 10?

Microsoft sure wants me to. So, apparently, does Mozilla. The latest version won't hardly run in Win 8.1 which is my current OS. I've had to reload an old version of Firefox to use my email, and some online stuff doesn't like that either. Tells me my browser is out-of-date. I'm forced to use Explorer sometimes.

The only experience I have had with Win10 was when my wife upgraded her laptop (without telling me), and promptly lost access to her old Lexmark printer--no Win10 drivers available and Win10 wouldn't recognize the old drivers--which admittedly were from Windows Vista. Fortunately she need a new printer anyway, as she needed scan and copy capability and the old one, a Z1300, was print only. I have a
Canon MX360 all-in-one, and, according to what I've read, it should work with current drivers. But why is Microsoft trying to bully me into upgrading? And what advantages will Win 10 give me, other then letting me run the most current version of Firefox (maybe)?

Your current issues with Firefox have absolutely nothing to do with your Operating System so don't get distracted by that. 8.1 is a great OS and any problems with Firefox are nothing to do with that.
Deal with your Firefox issues separately. Post a separate thread about that here and don't confuse different things.
There should be no reason why Fx latest version 46.01 wont work fine in 8.1 - if it works fine in Vista, it will work fine in Windows 8.1.
There are issues that *some* people have upgrading Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10 but if the person's current system is well-maintained, properly and fully up to date with both drivers and Windows update, there is no reason why it wont upgrade just fine.
You need to deal with your personal problem with Firefox without confusing it with the OS.
If you don't want Windows 10, then just don't allow it to update. Hide all updates for that and use this program:

I have a 15 year old printer that works fine on Win 10.

Since I have FF ESR v 45.1.1 running on XP and four Win 7 computers, you should be able to run it on a newer version of Windows.

First run FF without any addons. (Help restart with addons disabled). It should run with no problem. Next you enable one addon and run it to see if it works, if it does, try another addon until find an addon or addons that are causing your issues. Remove the offending addon(s).

Sure, for ~98% of users: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/home/product/Firefox?version=46.0.1&days=7

Probably a higher % for new profiles, increasingly lower % with profile age; for 'tweaked' profiles, users with privacy concerns, their data is less likely to even be reported and included in the above stats.

A high proportion of crash causes are Flash-related: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/top...fox&version=46.0.1&days=7&process_type=plugin

That's why I suggested in post #2 a separate specific thread to deal with what is causing that non-OS problem. It's nothing to do with Win 8 or Win 10. It all becomes a mess when users are not helped and encouraged to deal with issues clearly and carefully.

Should you upgrade to Win 10 well depends on if your PC/Laptop will run it and the upgrade scan app will tell you where issues may lie, but if you really dont need to upgrade then dont if the computer is working for what you need, Win 7 is great.

Firefox and any current version will run with any Windows from XP to 10 so as above you have likely a profile issue that needs sorting opposed to getting a new Windows to fix Firefox.

Thanks for the input. I'll focus on getting Firefox to work. That's really the only issue I'm having.

Make a new profile. To do that at the run box type
    firefox.exe -p
Note the space between e and -

If the new profile works, you can move over your bookmarks and then start installing addons one at a time checking after each one if it works.

I tried to upgrade to Windows 10. The website said, nope, you can't do it. There's a way around it, but I think I'll just stick with 8.1 for this computer.

I had to LOL when I read "If it's not broken then don't fix it" and the suggestion to move to 10. For many Win 10 is a horrible and invasive OS.

Not for me and not for countless others. We forget that when upgrading the result depends on the state of the system being upgraded. Using any of the now 4 different programs means it is no more invasive that XP was. Win10 is by all measures a great OS.
