The Deadline W10 Debate: Update Or Not?

    Bring your best thoughts everyone.

I have an image of W10, but I have reverted back to W7 for a fairly long list of reasons. For me, even though the move is free, perpetual security updates is not going to be a reason to change to Windows 10. I guess that is a valid enough reason for some to make the move or at least I guess I could see why that should be enough. It's not enough for me, since for the time, I see W7 as a better operating system.

I feel bad about the fact that I only have a few days with Windows 10. Something about the behavior of the OS left me feeling really blah. Where I feel like I can work with W7, I found issues with 3rd party software in W10 that I know I would rely on, and that I don't think these will be updated for 10. I tend to tinker in my own way with the actual run-time characteristics of Windows, so some of the software I run is highly specialized.

One thing I would like to say about this is that I can't help but think of how much it would help everyone if MS would extend the life of W7 and W8 for an 5 extra years. I mean if W10 is the only choice beyond W7 and W8, why not? This could only lead to good karma for the company.

For me, maybe I am just not ready to make this change, but I am willing to listen to any an all you guys reasons for changing. I have the feeling July 29 will pass on me without a change though. Also, I wonder if I will still be on W7 in 20 years (?). Will it survive? Anybody feel like W10 is making you ready to try to make a go of it with W7, Vista, XP, or 8 or another Windows OS or Linux?

I have Vista 7 and 8.1 and each has a collection of software for different uses on each machine depending on what I was into doing during the time I used that particular machine. I don't care to have any one changed. I will sooner or later have 10 when it comes on a pc that I acquire with it on it. I can wait till then.Only other way for me will be if a retail version is offered and I put it on a second partition or other drive.

Thank for the post. I actually hadn't thought of that. So far, I have always bought used PCs, other than the first 2 I owned (a 486 and a Pentium 2). Your thinking does cause me to feel a little bit of encouragement for sure. However, I wonder if I will be looking for a PC with a Windows 7 key on it next time I buy lol...

Today I bought a laptop running Windows 10 Home... for my 76 year old mom!
Tomorrow I will set it up with Avast Antivirus, Mozilla Firefox, Classic Shell and O&O ShutUp10. I will also turn off Automatic Updates. I'm looking forward o_O  to see what Windows 10 is offering - I prefer firsthand experience.

For the time being, I'll stay with Windows 7 until a motherboard replacement decides otherwise. Then... who knows...

There is a couple tech shops in each larger city around where I'm located and I still see several with boxed factory refurbished standard WIN 7 pc's. I don't see the source drying up.

As for new, I wonder how the installed Win10 will progress as time moves along . After this fall will new pc's by then have the anniversary update at least as a bare minimum? Or will a new pc need 10 gigs of downloads before it becomes quieted down? Still a lot to wonder about.

You can't turn off Automatic Updates in Win 10. You can set the computer to metered connection but, that will only delay the inevitable.

Didn't I see a registry edit someplace that gives one the ability to change updates using all the Windows 7 choices? I could try to find it again, but I recall seeing that all the choices were there, such as notify but do not download and download but do not install, etc...

Don't be too shocked when you see a 'disabled' WU Started and greyed out after a reboot.

I have mine set to Manual but, it was set that way before Eldon pointed me to the setting.

I'm running 10 on three of four systems here, all on automatic updating. No usability problems at all, even including Lotus 1-2-3 written 18 years ago, but I do keep available VMs of XP, Vista, 7 and 8.1 for use as necessary, such as running an old Epson flatbed scanner and an old version of TurboCAD and, of course, being able to help others using those systems. I really appreciate having hours and hours freed up each month not having to download, scrutinise and install updates. I know updates can be turned off but can't see the point - updates have never, ever caused me any significant problems and may have saved me from one or two.

My wife let me upgrade her Win 8.1 to Win 10. She's a school teacher and needs her laptop for things dealing with work that confuses the daylights out of me. She's not very tech savvy at all and her transition from 8.1 to 10 was smooth and as of right now she's never had any usability problems at all, and AtlBo you personally know that I wouldn't say it if it wasn't the truth.

For a modern computer, not sure what is scary about it. If it is privacy issues, you might as well, disconnect from the internet.

There is nothing at all intrinsically wrong with Windows 10, it's barely different to Win 8.1 and works very well, especially when the privacy issues are blocked. Since anyone intending to continue using Windows, the free upgrade from Win 7/8 is worth it.
Mac is a different kettle of fish and I don't see it as remotely relevant to Windows. It's only relevant if a person doesn't want Windows.

Oh how I just wish I had kept notes of some of the abuse hurled at XP when it came out :D
