This is probably a really simple one for some of you, but I formatted my usb stick, then transferred a few mp3 files onto it so I could play it in my car, and it comes up saying 'cannot play' for some strange reason.

I have formatted and tried both NTFS and exFAT, but for some reason I cant play these files when I insert into my usb drive in my car.

it was all fine until I formatted it :-/

It needs to be formatted to your cars input.I had the same issue.

There is a program to do this i will try to find it.

Be cause Windows will not format to a certain file

It's good that using a third-party program to format a usb drive worked, but contrary to the advice you were given, they format perfectly well in all windows systems up to and including Windows 10 without difficulty.

The reason i suggested the third part software is be cause it would be much easier with that program than trying to format with windows.

Windows can format some times to 32 fat and some times can't.

I have had it happen where usb would not format to 32 fat or would not recommend it in the reformatting system.

This is why i suggested this program for it.Only takes a few mins.

I've used the Avast Free for a long while, and have been very happy with it. Panda is also a decent AV and it has a very light system footprint, but I have not used it as extensively as Avast.
