    I find gmail excellent.
To be honest, 2gb of ram these days is on the edge of effectiveness. It depends on the model/make of the system and OS and what its motherboard will allow in terms of maximum ram and if the system is 32 bit (also old hat now) it simply wont use more than 4gb max.
I currently use fibre optic - well have been for some time - and it knocks the socks off DSL. Here in the UK we are having a big argument about that because stats show that only 2% of the business and personal 'internet connected' market have average download speeds of 30mb per second or above.

As far as smart phones are concerned, I have been using Samsung Galaxy S2 then S4 for about 5 years and I have no desire to go to an Apple iPhone.
I have no problem with wireless whether at home or in a wifi hotspot outdoors, but 4G mobile data is inconsistent and that matters not what phone is being used

    1. gmail has worked well for us. We have 4 computers with Win 7 and an Android tablet, also an eeepc netbook. No smartphones.
    2. fastmail has its glitches at times. I've had an account since Nov. 2011.
    3. If you have 2GB on an eeepc, you won't be able to install more. I have a 701 purchased new in Jan 2008 with linux (chose that instead of Windows). Since the linux distro is old and can't be updated - not enough room with only a 4GB ssd installed, I chose to run a live up to date linux disto from a USB stick to surf safely.
The installed linux OS works fine for things I do off the internet - read books and watch videos.
What model eeepc? I assume yours came with Windows and might have a larger hd than mine.

1GB RAM which can be upgraded to 2GB.

16GB ssd which is far roomier than my 4GB ssd, less usable than 4GB.

You could install linux on it and have a nice working computer.

I run linux from a USB stick because my ssd is too small to install one of the newer linux distros that I prefer.
