and I'm getting a black flashing rectangle in the lower right of the video when I play it with Media Player Classic Home Cinema. If I expand the view to full screen, the rectangle moves to the centre. In Options, Playback, Output, I've got DirectShow Video set to Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter) Can anyone tell me why I'm getting a black flashing rectangle?

What happens when you playback using a different player, Pot Player, Windows Media Player, GOM, ... ?

I have all my players set to loop. In PotPlayer, there's a slowness and stickiness to the first few frames of the video but no black rectangle. In GOM Player, also no black rectangle but very weird playback. Audio cut off for the first second, playback sticks in the middle but then doesn't stick on the second playback, but then sticks again on the third. The video doesn't seem to want to play smoothly and normally in anything.

Correction: It plays perfectly in Windows Media Player. Why not in anything else though?

    Grr, forum glitch.

Pot, Gom and WMP all use their own codecs for playback, yes?

That leaves something 'non-standard' in the way the mp4 was created?

What graphics card/chip do you have? Is hardware acceleration enabled or disabled in the players?

    I wouldn't know.

    Again, wrong person to ask.

Don't know. Don't know how to find out.

No worries, friend, good to see you, your current circumstances are no fun though. Hang in there.

Jesse, forum software glitched on me, threw a dupe post in, I chnged the dupe, only to find the original had gone AWOL, changed the dupe again to the current version...

Sorry, wasn't much help. I don't know how to read GSpot's results or post them.

What, I have to be an expert to be allowed post here, do I? I won't be needing any help from you, thank you.

    Could you upload the video?
And what software did you use to make the video?

I don't think it is the video now. I think it's my graphics card. The flickering rectangle disappeared without me actually doing anything. Then it appeared again, then it disappeared again. So I'm thinking now it's a hardware problem.

I'd rather not upload the video, it's private. I'm using the free version of Sothink Video Converter.

Under Options, select Export, then check the box for Enable Export. Under File (where you opened the video file, select Close. It will now save a text document with all the info GSpot found in the same folder as your video. Add it as an attachment. For the video card, try Speccy.

With this attitude, you won't get much help at all. I'm far from an expert also, if I can find that out, so can you. The more info you give, the more likely you'll get results. When people try to help you, meet them half way.

Thanks. I know it's not the video now. It's definitely the graphics card. The exact same video plays perfectly one minute then with a flickering black rectangle the next, then perfectly again, then rectangle again. So it must be a graphics card problem. I'll look up the info with Speccy.

I don't see an "er... what?" as being particularly helpful.

But I know NOTHING and have no idea how to search for the right things or how to trust what I find. So whenever I need help, I ask here.

I don't want any help of any kind from that particular person. I've witnessed his kind of help in another thread and it's the kind I can do without.

    Speccy and Belarc Advisor
are great small free tools to tell you everything you need to know about your system, so that whenever anyone asks you something specific, you have the information there in front of you in 10 seconds.
Also the internet (Google, Bing or whatever search engine you use) is your friend.
It is there to help you just as much as a forum.
Search questions like 'How do I find out what graphics are on my system? , or '......what CPU I have' etc etc etc
will provide you the answers you need.
The more you do that yourself the more you will learn information that will stay in your mind for the next time.
Just asking questions on a forum is the least useful way to learn.
And when you do need help on a forum - this one or any forum - remember that the only people trying to help you are people doing it out of the kindness of their heart and are neither trained people nor employees. Treat them with respect.

There's definitely something seriously wrong with my graphics. I keep opening and reopening the exact same videos and one minute they're fine and the next I get this flickering rectangle. What's wrong? Is it my card, my monitor? It's not the videos, I know that now.

In post #3 you said hat video plays just fine in Windows Media Player. If that's still the case then just stick to viewing it there.
Without knowing the exact make up of that video, it's impossible to know why it wont play smoothly in MPC Home Cinema.

Basically, your graphics component is very weak, it can only play basic video in a small frame, going full screen would result in a slide show, there's very little you can do to improve it.

The above shows the video is full HD @ 24fps, your graphics isn't likely to be able to cope with 720P at that frame rate without obvious glitches and many missed frames, 1080P (like the above) would be way out of range.

OK, thanks. At least now I know that it isn't my computer that's f**king up. Cheers.
