    Ha! Not really. :D

BUT....almost a year to the date from putting a resume in to my local government for a job posting, I actually started working at our big local library this week. :)

This has been the longest process for ANYTHING I have ever gone through in my whole life. I applied last August, got a call December that they'd be calling me for an interview after the new year, got another call in February asking if I was still available, when I told them I was, they said they'd call me in a couple of weeks. In April, I finally went in for an interview, got a call in June that I got the job...and FINALLY started working this past week.

If this is what it takes on the county level, I have to wonder how our state and federal governments work. Oh wait... https://xenforo.com/community/styles/default/xenforo/clear.png https://xenforo.com/community/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/laugh.png

Anyway, I'm very excited. I'll just be working part time, but I love libraries (and volunteer at my kids' high school library).

:D I really really should have thought of that and sadly did not. But that made me laugh.

lmao...you won't be getting rid of me that easily, Tim.

I'll be working there 3 days a week (15 hours total). Gives me plenty of time for MGs (and golf :D)

It is cool. You get paid to hang out with thoughts and knowledge.... how is that not amazing?

Congratulations on the job! Enjoy every moment, except the ones spent around idiot customers, and make sure you memorize those so you can tell us all about them! :)

Thanks kat and Mimsy! I hope to enjoy it. So far so good.

No doubt on the idiot customers. Who knew when you were getting most stuff for free you could still be an asss. First 5 minutes there, I saw some guy giving the poor girl a hard time because he had to physically come in to renew his card so he could still get his free eReader books. How awful for him that he now has to walk in for about 2 minutes every 3 years. o_O

Obviously an idiot who has no idea how things work. Reality does not change just because you throw a fit about it. You have to whiiiiine, and if you don't get that nasally pitch absolutely right, it still won't work.

It's amazing how ignorant some people are about how the world works.

Congrats on winning the job Laura:)
Shows you have great staying power to win the job after a 12 month selection process ;)
What were they doing all this time???o_O Maybe they tried out some other applicants that were "not suited" for the position
Whatever happened you now have the job so all good and I reckon part time jobs are great because it doesn't really seem like work so much when it is only a few short days a week.

Hmmm.... here was I thinking they were phasing out books when I tried to donate all my electronics data books for free to several libraries and also several technical school libraries only to be told they are reducing the number of books on shelves as most people now want to download ebooks.:(

Congratulations, lady! Some of the smartest people I know are librarians. It's a cool job.

I've been accused of trying to start a library of my own, with all the books I have, lol I've finally run out of room, and have had to thin out my collections. Whenever I fear the book is an endangered species, I just put a box of them on my porch with a sign that says "free books" and they gradually vanish like a plate of cookies.

You join the ranks of librarians like Eratosthenes, Ben Franklin, Golda Meir, Lewis Carroll . . . just to name a few guardians of history and the written word (and now the digital word as well).

No doubt. lol...I did ask after having been there for 30 minutes and seeing two customer service idiots, how often it happened. My boss said not much, that just happened to be a rough morning for it. Part of the reason they wanted me was because of my heavy retail background. I managed 2 different departments in a large department store a long time ago and had to deal with every problem customer my sales associates couldn't deal with, so that isn't a problem. Just funny to think that people who aren't actually buying anything or paying for membership have issues.

    Thanks joffa. :)

I think it was a combination of it being a county government job so they always have it posted, to then the head of circulation (my boss) being in a slow time when I applied and not really needing anyone. That was about 5 months of it. The next 6 months were definitely the government red tape on hiring...even part time. I'm pretty sure they hadn't hired anyone prior, but who knows, maybe someone else had been in the queue for the 6 months prior to me. lol

I had to go to a county government orientation to learn how to not harass people at the work place and other things like that and ironically was sitting right next to 2 women who had applied to the job I had. The one had an interview and didn't get hired. The other didn't get an interview. They were working at one of the very small branches. The library I am at is very big and very very busy, and is the district center for the whole 18 library system. I guess they both wanted to be there. It was an awkward conversation. lol

Libraries can't take eBooks as donations because of copyright and licensing laws. When they buy (or mostly rent for 12-18 months) ebooks, they pay for the library license which is a lot more than just purchasing the book. As far as book donations, we take them...and then have a huge book sale 2 times a year to raise money. The area where those are is like a mini library. People are definitely still checking out books though.

Aww...thanks Spad. :) I'm just going to be at the circulation desk (and all the other areas and jobs that pertains to), but I'll still take the smart comment. ;)

I have to say, I read a ton, but have gradually gone mostly to ebooks on my kindle. I do like reading a real book still, though.

I work for a doctor's office. I've had a few people (one was a government agency) call and ask if we accept Access cards (food stamps). When I said no, I got major attitude. I'm sorry but food stamps are not insurance.

Thanks! I love libraries too. That's why I wanted to work there. haha...apparently, no, I can not waive your fines. Turns out I can't waive my own either. One perk is that I don't have to pay fees on rental books, audio books or DVDs, though.

The libraries around here allow you to donate the amount you owe to a local charity instead of paying the fine. I like that system. :)

I clicked on the link and actually am not familiar with that. I couldn't tell if it was for libraries or individuals. We are a traditional public library houses books and also offers a ton of online materials, databases, community services and classes. I am just going to be working part time at the circulation desk doing all the customer oriented stuff that goes along with that role.

Laura, think if I have this right DOA's mom, was a librarian that in work I would go see to get me medical research papers and books etc on a given medical topic, actually a fair amount of work they have to do especially to collate research papers from the likes of Medline, PubMed, ResearchGate and Elsevier to name a few, I do a lot of my own searching but takes time to get right papers.

I take it the circulation desk is books in books out (sound like Mr Miyagi)
