Genuine Maxthon Portable Doesn't Work On Pac Platform

I already made this inquiry over at the Maxthon forum since more than a day ago and so far I've gotten no hits as far as possible solutions. So, I thought I'd try my luck here.

    Here it is:

Up to this time, as far as for my Portable version of Maxthon Cloud, I have been using PortableApps.com's 4.4.8.2000 version without a problem. Today I finally got around to attempting to try out the genuine Maxthon Portable 4.9.3.1000 version downloaded from the Maxthon forums. From the get go, the genuine version would not even get recognized by the PortableApps.com platform. It wouldn't display on the menu. I looked under the hood to see if I could spot the problem. I immediate noticed that the main Maxthon Application file was not present in the root directory. All the other Portable Apps that I use always have the main Application file in the root directory regardless of whether they are PortableApps.com versions or otherwise.

After poking around in the 6 or so Folders in the root directory, I found the main Application file in the bin Folder I believe. Out of curiosity, I Double Clicked on the main Application file icon from there. Maxthon Cloud Portable did come up. So, I decided I could rig up a tweaked version of the root folder by adding the main Application file to it ... then zipping it ... then installing it into my PortableApps.com platform from there. Well, that didn't work either. It would give me a message that MSVCP120.dll could not be found.

So ... WHY does the genuine Maxthon Cloud Portable 4.9.3.1000 version not have the main Application file in the root directory? Isn't that a flaw? Has anyone else been able to successfully install that version onto the PortableApps.com platform successfully as is?

The portable version of Maxthon Cloud is downloaded in a 7z archive. It will not automatically be recognized by the PortableApps.com Platform.
One option is to inform PortableApps.com about the latest version of Maxthon Cloud.

Oh, I'm aware that the genuine Maxthon Cloud version is packed in 7z format. But, as I alluded to in my comment, not all of my Portable Apps that I have in my PortableApps.com platform are of the PortableApps.com variety. I have many in there that are from 3rd parties packed in Zip format. Those I unpack and install with IZArc2Go without any problem.

IZArc2Go can unpack the 7z format and does so successfully. The Pterodactyl in the Oinment is that upon the unpacking being executed and the installing of stuff being performed into the PortableApps root directory of my PortableApps.com platform in my Flash Drive --- unlike ALL of my other Portable Apps, this genuine Maxthon Portable 4.9.3.1000 has turned out to be the ONLY Portable App that doesn't place the Main Application file in the root directory.

When all the unpacking and installing dust has settled, there are just around 6 FOLDERS there in the root directory. For some weird and inefficient reason, the Main Application file is over there hidden in the bin folder. Naturally the PortableApps.com platform is not going to recognize the App, much less be able to bring it up since it doesn't even display it in the menu.

I guess it could possibly be that knowingly and by design, the genuine Maxthon Portable version is not made for easy of install and not meant for use on a platform like PortableApps.com. Maybe it's just made for it to be used manually ... via just hunting around for the Main Application file icon and clicking on it manually. :confused:o_O

As to informing PortableApps.com about the newer 4.9.3.1000 version?
Well, I had noticed that PortableApps.com was solidly stuck at version 4.4.8.2000. So, I inquired on the Maxthon forum as to whether 4.9.3.1000 WAS the latest version. The answer was that well ... yes and no ... not exactly. As I understand it, Maxthon Cloud 4.4.8.2000 is that latest Official version. Maxthon Cloud 4.9.3.1000 is more of an extra, Unofficial version meant to serve as a bridge to segue into the upcoming Maxthon Cloud 5.0 that is currently in Alpha status.

    I did not know this.
Thanks, I will have to have another look at adding non-PortableApps.com software to my memory stick. Unfortunately, it wont be anytime soon.
Your post #4 might explain why PortableApps.com hasn't updated Maxthon Cloud.

BTW I have been using IZArc for about 10 years.

Yeah, no doubt PortableApps.com's policy is to only release official / stable versions.

And I'm beginning to theorize more and more that Maxthon Cloud 4.9.3.1000's unofficial status is probably the reason it's not packed in the more traditional manner that all other Portable Apps are packed in with the Main Application file in the root directory. While it wasn't declared a Beta or Snapshot or anything like that, I did get that read between the lines vibe that it was nevertheless a WYSIWYG experimental stepping stone that you could use a la User Beware with no guarantees style.

Oh well, I guess I'll just keep using my PAC 4.4.8.2000 Portable version until version 5.0 comes out. I only use my Portable version when I periodically go download Apps on my sister's computer anyway. Otherwise I use the 4.9.3.1000 Installer version on my computer for all my regular usage.

You've used those 2 sites, plodr? You can vouche that they're reasonably SAFE?

I remember some months back when I was hoping to find a Portable version of WPS Office. After searching high and low, I did find one. But, Nnnnggg, I had a bad feeling about it. It was some version that some dude created and had on his Blog. I had never heard of the guy or his Blog. So, I skipped trying out that version.

I go to the pendrive site for the Universal Installer; I don't remember if I downloaded any apps from there.

I use this, though I'm not sure if I got it here

I have one stick with lots of portable programs and I can't remember the source of every one.

Chim, I will certainly recommend winPenPack. I first use the Essentials edition almost 9 years ago.
I actually tried to make a portable version using Cameyo but, it didn't work.

Great. Thanks, plodr ... Eldon. I have bookmarked them. Now I have to go through those gold mines to see what I can find.
