The Windows 10 Update Saga

I did do a search for other forum members posts on the horror's of Windows 10 updates. As often is the case some reminds the posting member to read what has previously been written. I can't say that I have found and read ever Win 10 update suggestion, tutorial and post but I have read many and with the exception of reading one by Max who suggests a program which may allow an owner of a Win 10 device to take back the control and option of allowing MS to change ones settings and choice to not update with out permission; I haven't found a way to own my own computer.

Like one of the other members I'll seriously thinking of banking on a Mac and hopefully put an end to this hideous invasion of privacy and ownership of my own PC.

If anything new has developed on this front please forgive me for not finding it and if it's not too much to ask please post a link so I can read if all hope is gone or if a little still exists.

    Thanks,

    Kryp

You probably need to tell us, in specific detail, what problems you have had when Win 10 updates.
It's important to put the 'privacy' issue as a separate one, as it's nothing to with OS updates.
For the privacy issue just use one of the now many programs to deal with that:
This is my preferred program - O&O Shut Up 10 - but the video tutorial below the download link gives information on others.

I personally am not seeing any problems with Win 10 OS updates on 4 systems. They happen, they ask for a restart and that's it.
It very much depends on the state of any unique system to start with and whether drivers are fully up to date.

    Hi

Windows 10 update if you were going from an older Windows OS works well BUT IF your hardware and software is compatible with Windows 10, here-in lies the issue for many they think a Windows & running PC will run Win10 it may not, also does your software have Win10 updates, if not then you "may" have issues with the install, sadly the issue in part does not lie with Windows 10 but many factors.

Security and privacy, if thinking MAC is the way then its not as internet is internet and data can be spied upon and MACs are not a safe as you'd be led to believe, Windows is as safe as you search and keep software up to date and employ some core security apps.

You can in Settings > Update > Advanced set Windows Update to defer these so you can review, although not had issues on my systems with auto update, but with any OS you should also have backups to our data in the event of an issue, this would be same on MAC/Google/Linux etc as I use Acronis True Image as my backup software, but free alternatives are available.

I might be missing something glaringly obvious but I see no option to turn off automatic updates.

You have your own thread on issues you face with Windows 10 so it's more helpful to you, and this thread starter, to post issues there.

I read this thread because I was relieved to see it is not just me having issues with Win 10. Of course, people read these threads to see if an answer to a problem is already answered. David tells us how to make choices about how to get Windows Updates in Win 10. I followed his instructions, and cannot find any options to turn automatic updating off. I have not specifically started a thread on Windows Updating being on or off. Mine was about Windows Update just randomly restarting my computer itself whilst I was doing work on it.

But as you already have your own thread on exactly the same subject, posting in someone else's thread is not considered good practice on help forums. It is considered hijacking, taking attention away from the user who started it.
If you wanted to add something additional to your own existing thread, that's fine.

Not on this topic I do not. I am making no attempt to hijack this thread. It seems to me your reptitive postings are taking this thread more off tangent than was necessary.

After posting it occurred to me to include much of the computer information that is suggested and preferred in most help forums. So let me start with that: But first: In just about every version of Windows that I've had there is an icon on the desktop that is called My Computer. I double click that or right click and go to properties and everything I need to know about my computer is there so I tell all of you the make model, HDD size, RAM, Processor and version of the OS. Now, for the last 15 minutes I'm trying to recall how and where I can find that in one place is a brain fart again. I can go to a paper folder that I made when I first purchased this laptop less than a year ago and I may need to do that but the truth of the matter that IMHO this type of change that MS decides to make puzzles me. Why make what is well known by millions if not billions of people different? Does having that window with all of the above mentioned information in some other place more safe? If not that then why?
But here is what I finally found:
Make and Model: Tohsiba E45W-C420 0X, Intel Core i3-5015U, 2.1 GHz, 6 gigs RAM, Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 5500
About 500 GB HDD about 81 GB used
    Anything else needed?

For specifics: The whole desktop changed. It's as if I decided to use a different widget or something like that not knowing what other side effects might come with my choice, If I don' keep a very accurate detailed accounting of what happens and when it's not so easy to remember the details of what the changes are and like now it leads to far too many words needed to say or to attempt to recall what exactly is different and if those differences are directly the results of a Windows 10 update.

I'm going to do the best that I can to recall what happens or what doesn't happen. It's not as easy to notice and recall every change.
Besides the obvious desktop change " Cortana " is now active. I made a point of NOT giving permission for Cortana to be activated. Like far too many app's devices, programs, things related to computers and smart phone I'm far too often being asked to accept this and that change to use or to continue using one of these gizmo's. People can tell me their idea's and thoughts about why this is so but how can I know for sure that these explanation's are in fact what other people are telling me?

One change that seemed to be packaged with Win 10 is a browser called Edge. It's the same icon as Internet Explorer and looks like IE but I get these messages from time to time that such and such is not supported for this type of browser. I downloaded Firefox which also didn't work exactly like the browser I was used to. Chrome is often trying to install on my computer as part of another program of when going to a particular page I get a pop-up window that strongly recommends that I download and use Chrome. I found a Chrome based Browser that offered more privacy than the Chrome browser offered by Google, so I downloaded that and it quickly became my favorite browser.

Here is one of the changes I am guessing was made with the windows 10 update. All of the browsers allowed me to use google voice and or google hangouts to text my contacts or to make VOIP phone calls from my PC. After the last forced to accept windows 10 update every browser informs me that it needs a " plug-in " in-order to make a call or text. I agree to allowing the download but when trying to make a call I get the same message. I have tried calling with every browser I have and non of them work. I have used Google Voice to make phone calls since the early 2000's on every type of computer and with ever operating system including Windows 10 until this latest update.

The area to the right of the start menu only recently started allowing me to type real words into it to do a search for things. After the update the moment I put my cursor into that space Cortana interrupted asking me how it could help me. Cortana doesn't understand my voice and get's 50% of the words wrong.

There are more things and I honestly believe that there are some that I have yet to discover.

I'm ashamed to say that over the last two years I've purchased 4 new laptops trying to resolve problems that arose with each of them and attempting to get tech support from foreigners who are " placing you on a brief hold for a few minutes " was so annoying that buying a new PC seemed like a smarter choice. But each new computer was in many ways worse that the previous one. One was a windows 8.1 which I was talked into updating to windows 10 since it was free and it would " probably solve the problems " it did not solve any problems and it actually created more. I quickly retired that PC and when I restarted it I tried to go back to 8.1 but was blocked in doing so because a time limit was programed into it so going back was impossible to achieve.

I do not know about the program that you mentioned " http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/oo_shutup10.html " even this turned into a limit of choices so a simple " copy " and paste of the words" O&O Shut up 10" was not an option. The closest choice was to " copy link " or " ask Cortana"

Typing these epic messages in order to explain the details annoys the readers and makes me crazy that things can not be said in a few words. How and why are we being manipulated in this way?

I apologize that I can not answer your question simply, directly, specifically because my computer is being ruled by dictators who want their flock to follow and do everything that they and their team want us to do.

I do want to say that I found a way to turn off updates and it worked for a while. It was rather complicated and included going deep into places that most users would not even know about or attempt to find and do. But somehow something must have changed those deep changes back and how I knew was when I went to turn off my PC and my only options were "SLEEP" or update and turn off or update and restart. I tried disconnecting my internet connection but it seemed that the downloads were already in my computer so disconnecting from the internet did not prevent it from updating. I went back and reset those deep commands several times but each time the updates came back and they started coming back faster.

Maybe one of these programs that you mentioned might prevent updates going forward but in the mean time I find myself like most human beings who have a computer, limited to the kindness of others on forums like this because MS and computer companies limit support from them directly.

If I haven't already attempted to make a comment, or op/ed in the Lounge about what is happening to us as a country, as a species, and as human beings I might do a search to see if I or someone else has pointed out how we are all being groomed for total control by the Corporate Giants, the Gov, and the unknown One's who decide what we need and who we can talk to about problems.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

System Information - in Windows 10 simply click on the bottom left search magnifier icon and type System Information and it all appears in a window.
O&O Shut Up 10 is program to close down features of Win 10 you don't want and to shut down sending of information to MS. It is a zip file, doesn't install a program (so simply save it in a folder somewhere convenient) but makes changes to the way Win 10 behaves according to the choices you make. There are three levels of recommendations going from ones that are completely fine, to a next level which explains what happens if you choose them, and a third level of potential changes that you should only make if you fully understand how they might limited your use of the system. The download link at MajorGeeks, as I posted earlier, has a you tube tutorial.

I suggest you try and successfully complete the above first.

Other areas to look at are processes that start up at boot, ie when the system starts.
There are likely to be many that are not needed at start up.
You can investigate them using CCleaner Slim > Tools > Startups
or programs like Process Explorer or Microsoft Autoruns - all available to download at MajorGeeks.

I just want to answer your question directly by saying that this newest laptop is so groomed for windows 10 that it bends in half to be used as a tablet with a touch screen. I do understand that the offer from MS to update to 10 from older computers was/is very tempting. But as you suggested, the hardware may not tolerate windows 10 very well and then it will present a whole different set of problems.

Without getting too far off track with this as I mentioned in my reply to Max T today, I think that there is a plan in the works to control our lives. To control our drugs of choice ( mostly metaphorically speaking ): Computers and Communication
( Communication is also computer controlled ) "WE" ( HB's= Human Beings ) will be trained to accept what we are fed.

As I am typing this there is a TV show presenting data that shows a correlation between life expectancy and the sense of losing control of our lives and turning to drugs, alcohol, incessant game playing, and watching more and more shows with end of the world scenario's the infer an US and THEM mentality which doesn't sound much different than the terrorist mentality and chant to " kill the infidels "

Sorry if this sounds bleak but what I think is that this is happening slowly over time so like accepting the force feeding of Windows 10 updates, we are told and sold on the fact that "THIS IS GOOD!" " WE WANT THIS!" "WE NEED THIS" and then we pass that message on to our friends and family and we become soldier for change.

A friend of mine has what has turned into my favorite bumper sticker: " Be AWARE! " That might be tied with another bumper sticker that I read in New Hampshire that has the best motto on it's license plate which says: " Live Free or Die " that's where I read this on a bumper sticker: " The Voices in my HEAD told me to stay home today and clean my GUNS! " On the radio Louie Armstrong was singing: "
    Yes, I think to myself,
    What a wonderful world.

    Oh yeah. "

I found this document in my file folder: it is one of the ways that I turned off windows update and it worked GREAT until something disable it....and every method that I found was found out and disabled. This may sound weird but since I was just DX'd with cancer I have done a lot of research and one of the biggest problems that scientists are having solving the " cure cancer " search is that cancer seems to have it's own defense system that turns off our bodies normal immunity defense system which is basically white blood cells.
    For your reading enjoyment: http://www.healthline.com/health/wbc-count#Overview1

Way 1: Open it in the Start Menu.
Click the lower-left Start button to open the menu, type compmgmt.msc in the blank box and tap compmgmt
    for disabling auto update
Go to windows update, rgt click to properties click disable....or automatic to get it back

Thanks Max for all of your suggestions. I do have ALL of my " system information " and if there is a way to book mark that I will otherwise I will create a document with all of my info PLUS how I got to it. That said, do you want to see any other info about my PC?

I will TRY your O&O Shut Up to see how that works.

But for now I have lost my favorite VOIP service, at least on this PC. Posting in a Google forum hoping to find a fix for this latest problem is near futile. Those so called " help forums " are not even in the same league as Major Geeks or a few other help forums. Look at how quickly people responded to my post. You guys are THE BEST! Sincerely. And I am not offended that " Mark 59 " posted here in my post. Truth be known I considered posting in his but I recall being told in every forum I belong to " write your own post"
and not to " hijack " someone else's thread. I understand both positions. But if it is the policy not to add your own similar situation to someone else's post then I for sure have learned my lesson. Just saying....

PS did you see my last post about how I turned off update?

    Yes,
    s.

I am running Windows 10 on a very old motherboard. Even though I was originally running Win XP 32bit. I now run at 64 bits. All run from a SSD drive.
I would strongly recommend running Windows 10 from a SSD.

    Hi Max,
I had this accident back in January and since then I've fallen behind on just about everything in my life. ( not an excuse just a story )
So as often is the case I wake up and start prioritizing my day and something fall back on the priority list. This is what happened with the O&O Shut Up 10 download and as could have been predicted today I got that dreaded icon when I went to shut down that
" updates were waiting and my choices of course where to download and shut down or update and restart " I tried turning off my wifi connection thinking it might delay the process which it did not, so now I have whatever that latest update is.
On the download page that you linked in the first reply the download says " advertisement " and as with other " free " downloads there often are downloads that " speed up " or " fix registry problems ". Is that the price we must pay for the so called " free " download? And is that what exists on the link you passed on to me? ( Not complaining just asking )

And as mentioned above, I have a VA appointment that I have to get ready for so it will not be until this afternoon before I have enough time to view and read a tutorial and install the program.

I'm looking forward to gaining back some control of this invasion from MS.

    Thanks again!

I have a newer HP laptop that was made this year.

And i was able to install windows 7 pro 64 bit.I got sick of windows 10 issues.

And windows 7 run perfectly fine with the HP17 g121wm.You just got to make sure you find all the drivers for that operating system which i did find. And i have zero issues.

Some people may not have an issue with windows 10.But i do not need Microsoft Bs Privacy sneaking into my system with out me knowing about it.

I have avoided windows vista and 8 and 8.1 and now i can not stand windows 10.All most all the features in windows ten are bad not good as some may suggest.Every time there is a windows up which you can not disable it,Stuff tends to turn it self back on.After a update to the operating system.

And on top of that there are a few thing that erk me a little.Like i could not for the life of me delete the old windows partition i have tried every thing. It took up over 16 gigs of space for nothing.

And the windows 10 anniversary update was over 10gigs of data and took my systems all most over and hour or more to install.

There is just so many things wrong with windows 10 that most people are not realizing.

Last nights news was very interesting if anyone else saw it and thought as I did: Russia has specifically targeted MS and have found a major security flaw in windows 10 that allows them to exploit our country, our citizens, and the man in the mirror if you catch my drift.
DENIAL is a way of life in this country so the deniers will poo poo this information. Meanwhile Russia has developed their own OS that allows Russians to be totally free from MS. In addition the story mentioned the MS OFFICE vulnerability.
I am very much aware of propaganda and hyperbole, but it appears that things are getting VERY NASTY in the world of spying and hacking. So be aware to all!

    Hey Max, Good Morning,
I think you might be an early riser and I'm posting this question before watching the youtube video that you mention in this post.
It was downloaded and opened and I made some choices. So far windows 10 isn't bugging me about updating. That said I must have check a button that throws me a curve every time I sign on to my laptop. In stead of having my " picture < icon >" pop-up with a place for my password it now wants my email address associated with this computer AND my password. It's not like I forgot what it is but the email address is rather long so I'm wondering if you know which check box lead to this feature AND I read here that " this isn't a program. So when I tried to find the place to open OO shut up I couldn't find it.

Maybe the youtube will help me with this or if you're up early maybe you can tell me.

    Thanks!
