    Hi:
My wife received a popup that stated that her computer was infected (I did not see the popup). The popup was supposedly from Microsoft, and included a toll-free phone number.

She innocently called the number and allowed access to her computer for about 1/2 hour! She eventually had an appointment and ended the call.

I'm concerned what has happened, Not sure what to do.

The computer seems to run okay. She did receive the same popup again, and just closed it.

Can you provide any assistance or advice?

Which browser was being used when the popup appeared? Did your wife allow them to install any software? Did she allow them to install Citrix ? I see a recent folder for it?

Please run Hitman Pro again and activate the free trial license and have it cleanup all the Malware remnants and Potential Unwanted Programs that it finds. I'm not seeing much more to do.

She is using IE. She wasn't sure about software installation, but she knows she did not specifically install anything herself (such as Citrix), so anything recently installed is likely malicious.

I got the trial license from Hitman Pro and cleaned up as you instructed.

Should we do anything about the Citrix installation?

Should I make any security changes to our Wi-Fi modem?

    Thank you!

Okay we will remove folders for it later. I have noticed a sign of a Poweliks infection though and we need to run another scanning tool to collect more data so that we can properly remove it.

It should not be necessary but it would not hurt.

Please download the latest version of FRST the below link.

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

    • See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your next reply.
    • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Download the attached fixlist.txt file found at the bottom of this message and save fixlist.txt on your Desktop. Make sure you save it as a txt file.

    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST.exe on your Desktop.
    • Now I want you to disconnect your PC connectioto the internet by unplugging the cable ( if it is wireless then temporarily shutdown the wireless network ).
    • Run FRST.exe by right clicking on it and selecting Run As Adminstrator
    • Click the Fix button just once and wait.
    • Your computer should reboot after the fix runs.
    • Reconnect your internet connection after reboot so you can come back here to continue.
    • The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) please attach this new log to your next reply (attach or paste)
Now run a new scan with RogueKiller and attach the new log.

Are you having any remaining problems?

Looks like one more thing to do. Have RogueKiller fix the below item.

    [PUP.Gen2][Firefox:Addon] mi24kqth.default : LivingPlay TextLinks [textlinks@lplay.com] -> Found

Had RogueKiller fix/remove item per your direction.

Should I do anything about the Citrix installation you mentioned a couple days ago?

If you and your wife do not have any reason for having Citrix on your PC ( that is for legitimate purposes to provide remote access ) then you should delete the below folders.

    2016-12-21 12:44 - 2016-12-21 12:44 - 00000000 ____D C:\ProgramData\Citrix
    2016-12-21 12:24 - 2016-12-21 13:00 - 00000000 ____D C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix
    2016-12-21 12:24 - 2016-12-21 12:24 - 00000000 ____D C:\Users\Merrill\AppData\Local\Citrix

Citrix is not malware but if it could be used for malicious purposes.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    3. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    4. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    5. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    6. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your Windows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • For Windows 8 and 8.1 system restore see this link: Win 8 System Restore - How to enable/disable
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Completed. Thanks very much for all your assistance!
