I don't normally copy other peoples work, as it is to their credit that they answer, so credit him dandm2015 if it works as I see it seems to- I am on Windows 10 , at present, and not using my multi-boot hard drive, so I cannot run it through it on my own gig, but I will when I get time , but , I have put it all there to save you hunting, but apparently his way worked

    Hi

Editing my previous reply that I sent earlier today due to omitting one of the stages. Should be ok now!

Just one point to emphasise with installing the manual updates, after you have downloaded all the updates, disconnect from the internet before trying to install these updates, otherwise as soon as click to install the updates, it will go searching updates and you'll get nowhere. Also, make sure you are downloading the correct update for you installed operating system, i.e 32bit or 64bit. I would agree it's a real pain when doing clean installs and I'm not at all impressed with Microsoft.

I have pasted below the procedure that I use for my laptop when doing a clean install - this is a 32bit system and the OS disc does not include SP1 so that is why I install it separately.

Win 7 32 bit clean install update problem solution

It is important to follow this procedure otherwise checking for windows updates will hang forever.

    1. Download Windows6.1-KB3138612-x86.msuand save it.
    2. Download SUR Tool( Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86 SUR Tool) save it to same place
    3. Download Internet Explorer 11 –' IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe'
    4. Install Win 7 (32 bit for my Laptop)
    5. Install SP1 (if not already on your operating system disc - On earlier Win7 OS discs there was no SP1 but if you have one of these earlier versions you can download SP1 from MS).
    6. Install Internet Explorer 11 – IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe. (IE8 is no longer supported)
    7. Disconnect from the internet – this is very important!
    8. Restart the PC, making sure you are still disconnected from internet.
    9. Now Install the KB-3138612 file. Choose install.
    10. Reboot.
    11. Now install the Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu file. This will take a few minutes as it’s a big package and installs quite a few updates from the file.

    1. Now Reboot
    2. Connect to the internet and click to do a manual windows update. In my case, within about 3 minutes it had found 230 Critical updates and I chose to download them all. (I did not choose the uncritical ones).
    3. This obviously will take a while depending on the connection, but mine downloaded in about 30 minutes and then started to install.
So, it works for me, but bear in mind that if your system is 64 bit them download the correct KB file version. For a 64 bit system, the three files you need are 'Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu' and 'Windows6.1-KB3138612-x64.msu' and 'IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe'

All these files are easily found on the Microsoft site. If you Google the file number the MS page comes up first with that download file.

    Hope this helps. dandm2015

I was hoping it would work but it did not. When I tried to install the files I get a message that the file is not indicated for this computer. Ugh!
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Because it has already been installed, or superseded. The solution though a bit convoluted in baklogic's post is similar to a post of mine some time ago. This is the only way I have found Update works right from a clean SP1 install which does not have the most recent update module is below.

    Explanation found in this thread:

As it seems there are so many different aspects to something that should work automatically, 'the mechanics 'post could do it for some, where others did not work.

If you check the install as directed on that site- it does not say disconnect from the internet for that one, so try connecting to the internet with that one installed.
Also, that was for the x86(32bit) system, if yours is x64 -

FYI - Before I tried the above suggestions, I ran the windows update continuously and finally, after 36 hours, the update worked!! I am told that this is quite common for windows 7 computers (Thanks, Microsoft) as the company is pushing everyone towards W10.

Thank you everybody for your quick replies and your great support!
