    Hello
In attempting to do so I was presented with three choices so I could not proceed without wiping out the files with same names. When I was making the discs the PC named them like 001,002 etc. So when I was copying different discs to flash it was obvious I either had to make a selection of the three choices the PC gave me which I have forgotten now like replace a file with one in desalination or do not copy etc. or rename all the files. I have 100's.
I am doing this b/c optical discs are on the way out. I was thinking though that a flash drive could go bad and all videos would be lost.
    I guess I could rename all 1,2,3,4,through 600 +.
    Could you share an opinion.

Make a new folder for each dvd. Copy each dvd to it's own folder. Then copy the folders to the flash.

If you go with "Rename all Files" you get copies like
    1,2,3,4,....
Then the next group would be
    1(1),2(1),3(1)...
Then the next group would be
    1(2),2(2),3(2)...
And so on for each next copy.

It would be easier for me if I could name each like I asked about. That is 1-500 etc. but you indicate the PC would be naming them. So I could not just name them each 1 then 2 and eventuality 482 hen 483.
If I named the following file set based upon the preceding one wouldn't that be OK?
Sorry to appear thick but I aI guess I am not getting this.

You can rename any file. Not on the dvd but after it's copy to the flash or your hd. How are you making you copies?

I open the flash drive and also the DVD with the screen made smaller so I can see each, and copy and paste from the DVD to the flash.
I was thinking and instead of renaming hundreds of files your folder idea sounds good. I could make a folder in the flash drive and copy the contents of the DVD into it. Then do the same with each DVD into the same flash drive with a new folder for each DVD.
What do you think, name or not name the folders to avoid the confusion with files names and files?

    Imandy Mann likes this.

I think your way there is real good.
I would name the folder with a name to help remember what the dvd was about. Like if you had 5 music dvd's of different bands, go with the band name or album name so it's easier to know what each folder is. I've copied game cd's to the hd before and just used the real name of the cd. Like "3D Pinball" for example.

    Good luck!

I would name them by venue and date.

No periods in the file name.

I was afraid I would have the same problem naming folders as I did with files but I guess not so.
Friends of mine were suggesting I am doing a lot of work unnecessarily as the next generation I am making these for will have newer media and can either pay to have it done or do it with newer material.
I guess they can always find a DVD bay somewhere if they had too. I will leave a note on top of the stack as to how to do this if necessary..
Thank you very much for your suggestion as everything learned makes the next job easier.
    Good weekend
    Peter
P.S. Why no periods in the file name as they already exist?
Wouldn't naming folders with no punctuation suffice?

Periods are fine, but rather use underscores, because file names end with a period and then comes the file extension.
Yes, but using punctuation, like underscores, makes it visually easier to find which folder you're looking for.

    Thank you for that.
May I ask, would a DVD player work if you cannot find a PC with a DVD bay? ?read and write?

    No.
FWIW PCs with DVD drives are not going to disappear overnight.

What you could do is copy the DVD and save it as an *.iso file. The *.iso file can then be mounted in a 'virtual DVD drive', aka an 'image drive'.
    Have a look over here.

No DVD player is not good but I understand. I agree there will be DVD bays around for a while.
I do thank you for the link but I am not at that level. As I said before, someone can always have it done at cost if necessary.
Maybe I will start putting discs into folders within the flash drives and label them as was suggested.
I think it would be easier not to name the folders and it does not matter. The DVDs are not named now.

    peterr,
Copy the DVDs and save them as *.iso files. And then copy those *.iso files to flash drives. They will be accessible/available for many years to come.

Isn't burning an ISO file the same as burning any file? What is the advantage?
I'm sorry Eldon but I am not getting this -if you have time could you sort of step by step this one for mee -thanks

I said nothing about burning an ISO.
    Save them as ISO files.

Got it now and thank you for your help.

Using a period in a file name denotes the end of the name, and what follows is the file extension identifying it's type (.exe, .iso, .bat, .dat, .doc, etc.).

If you change the file extension to something it shouldn't be, the file may not work at all.

Folder names are another type of animal.

I removed the extension on some like peter.docx to peter but hey still played so I guess altering, per se, is not good but removing is OK?
