replaced the hdd to a ssd on an acer aspire 5553 laptop. install was rocky (hanging at the stage where it would normally create a user account, eventually using a Ethernet cable seemed to fix this issue) finally got to the desktop had problems with windows updates.
i expected as a fresh install there to be more can anyone confirm? (ss attached showing whats listed as installed)
windows reports update status: up to date last, checked today.
yet if i initiate a check it'll stay running and never complete, just checking. i only receive the above (up to date) if i reboot the system.

also the dvd drive is no longer showing in the system, any ideas?

also cant run the sandisk ssd dashboard as it never seems to load, to check the ssd or see if there is a firmware update.

i do wonder if all of these issues are cause by an update not being installed?

sorry the edit option expired as i was updating the version info:
    winver: win 10, 1607 os build 14393.693.

dvd drive - device mgr lists it under "disk drives" as hl-dt-stdvdram gt31N (i assume this is the dvd drive)

Your Win 10 is up to date. Windows Update delivers complete builds these days rather than loads of individual updates. You may be able to give your DVD a drive letter by looking at it in Disk Management.

what wow? really? they include them when you create the dvd / usb stick from the media creation tool? wow when did i miss that announcement? my life just got easier if that is the case?

ok under disk mgmt it seems to think it is a hdd? any tips?
i had a screenshot but it wont let me upload it.
    Disk mgmnt:
    Initialize Disk,
    Disk 1
use the following partition style for the selected disk:
    mbr
    gpt

    thanks
i assume i just download the chipset driver from here and point device manager to the extracted file?
    https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/support-product/2435?b=1&pn=LX.PU902.006

via: ide ata/atapi controller> standard sata ahci controller? (is this the correct one?)

oddly i thought id be lazy and see if searching windows online check would do anything, oddly its seems to have got stuck into an update check. (should i be worried). it looks like i'll have to reboot to stop the check.

You've just got to hope the Win 7 driver works in 10 :(

You can try removing and reinstalling but if that doesn't do the job you will have to wait and see if anyone else has an answer.

ill give it a go tomorrow, thank you for all the help.
e: i wonder if the 'wrong' chipset driver is why the ssd program wont run correctly, it would make sense...

Just curious, is the BIOS up to date on your board?

thanks, you know i never thought to check, its a family members, so i expect if there was they haven't.
i am a little reluctant as the last twice(!) I've done it its bricked both machines - requiring new mobos, i have no idea why it goes wrong, I'm a competent person.

i do know that prior to the windows 10 upgrade the dvd drive was available. so:
    win 7 = dvd drive.
    win 10 = no drive.
ssd with fresh install = no drive.

finally will let me upload another image, the one from before i mentioned assuming its a hdd!
and one showing device mgr listings, with hidden shown.

    update:
do these ssd results look ok?
its a sandisk ssd plus 120gb purchased https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-PLUS-Sata-inch-Internal/dp/B01F9G414U/ <-- how odd my link gets altered to the us site.

windows defender did not update its definitions, and seems to be stuck. i just have a feeling windows updates (and windows defender) is not updating correctly anyway i can check? even though Earthling has been kind enough to explain

With Defender, is it the only AV installed?

Hey, even the most seasoned IT Professionals will tell you that flashing a mobo is not some light hearted task. I still get a bit of anxiety when I do it, and I've been in this business going on 15 years now. Like you said, you are a competent person. I would make a backup of everything, then flash that mobo and see if that works. At the very least, that will eliminate an avenue of troubleshooting.
