OS: Windows XP Service Pack 3

    Problem:
After finding Malware by Superantispyware & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, the Quarantined items were removed.

Afterwards, the System Restore was turned off to flush any existing Malware restore points and the Laptop was restarted.

However, it loaded the Startup Frame of Windows XP and does not proceed to the Blue Screens.

Even on selection of the last Known configuration known to work gives the same result.

The OS could be loaded in all Safe Modes.

Please help me to restore the OS to start in the Normal Mode.

Unfortunately, that malware you had corrupted XP.

If you have the Windows XP installation CD, in Safe Mode (no networking or anything else) run Command prompt as Administrator. In the Command prompt window type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and include the space before the forward slash). System File Checker will run and if/when it finds errors it will request that you insert the XP installation CD.

If you don't have an installation CD, your IT department (if you have one) may need to do this for you.

    The following message appeared:

Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.

The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable].

SFCDisable Value data was already 0.

Running the REG file for Registry Fix didn’t help.

When running "sfc /scannow" the same message appears.

    In the
"Fix for System File Checker Error 0x000006ba RPC Server is unavailable" Instructions, the following comment was found:

"while in safe mode the RPC service is NOT running, irregardless of what ‘services.msc’ says. If you can boot into a normal login, you CAN run SFC in a command prompt."

Is there a way to make the OS boot in the normal mode?

The System Restore has been turned off and cannot be turned on in any of the Safe Modes.

A Disk Check was performed and no errors were found.

If Baklogic's suggestion fails, I'm afraid you're left with no choice but to back up all of your data and do a clean install of Windows XP and your Programs.

I felt that this might, ultimately, be the case because if after malware removal the Operating System doesn't function properly, it's almost impossible to get it to do so and you have to start over from scratch.

Microsoft support for Windows XP ended on 4/8/2014 so, it's extremely vulnerable. Is there any way you could upgrade your computer to a more secure and still supported OS like Windows 7? Will your programs run uunder Windows 7?

Unfortunately msconfig file was also damaged sometime back.

I am not sure whether the hardware in the laptop is supporting Windows 7 and also I am more in favour of Windows XP than the latter OSs. Another Desktop at my workplace with XP which got infected was attempted to upgrade to Windows 7 but did not have the adequate hardware resource.

I shall re-install XP and if fails try Windows 7.

I wonder whether after formatting the C Drive and re-installing XP will affect my Laptop Speakers, Microphone and the Camera.

Those device drivers would need to be re-installed.

Go to the computer manufacturer's support site and enter whichever number they request (if it's a Dell, enter the Service Tag Number) and go to the Drivers and downloads section. Download and install the device drivers for your computer.

Once you've re-installed XP and gotten all of the updates through 4/8/14, there's a way for you to get Microsoft Updates for XP until 2019 (unless Microsoft decides to pull the plug).

It involves incorporation of a reistry key:

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1JJmWFrL8Tvdms1bDF3YnVSWEE

Double click the file you download and confirm you want to install the registry key.

Windows Embedded (what is used in ATMs) is a version of XP SP3. What this registry key does is "change" your XP SP3 to POSReady 2009. It functions exactly like XP SP3 but, as I stated, you'll get Updates for XP, Internet Explorer, etc. until 2019. I did the registry entry on my XP SP3 laptop the day it became available (5/25/14) and have gotten updates every Patch Tuesday (the second Tuesday of each month) ever since.

I am unable to Re-install XP as the CD does not boot even after changing the boot order to 1st for the CD-ROM. The files in the CD could be read when entered in the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode doesn't apply to booting from CD.
Load the CD and restart your PC. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If you still have problems loading XP, once you have se to boot from cd,you might try tapping the enter button as the start up logoappears, as sometimes it can boot past the start setup boot notice , and you may have to keep trying ,a few times to catch it at the right time.

Unofficial XP Sp4 updates -takes a few minutes to download
    http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdo...ae50a64731cacc0288d9/5899e063/3c6e4/0/1?tsf=0
The download will start as soon as you get the link-I would not click on anything else- just click the link above.
This is the only working link that I found, but it will do .net framework, and explorer updates, too. Covers all from XP Sp1 upwards, so might save you a load of hard hunting for updates, as Microsoft no longer supports XP.

The OP said he changed Boot Order to CD ROM first so, I'm presuming he's inserted the Win XP installation CD and rebooted the computer. With the XP CD inserted, he states he's able to read the contents of it in all modes he can currently boot to.

I'm wondering if he changed boot order in BIOS Settings or chose the Boot device from the Boot choice menu.

It would be useful to try both ways, but the bit where it jumps to the already installed XP, and not to cd, could be either catching at the right time, or as you say boot settings in the bios.
Depending what pc system make is, perhaps he should try f2 at startup, or f10, or, f12, or even the del button to get into the bios, and then move across to boot order, and then choose cd from there, but ensure it is set as first boot, sometimes by pressing f5/f6 buttons to move it up to the top, then pressing f10 to save settings, then click o.k, and allow it to restart, but watch for the 'start from cd ' prompt as soon as it starts, with finger on the enter( return) button as soon as he switches on.

Also, I don't recommend the "Unofficial SP4" I tried both the Registry Key I suggested in Post #10 and the SP4 and didn't get the Updates with the SP4 that I did with the POSReady 2009. I uninstalled the SP4. Currently, POSReady 2009 is supported by Microsoft until March or April of 2019.

I could not get your link to load, before, that is why I looked for something else.
BUT-- AFTER TRYING AGAIN I GOT THE LINK TO WORK-SO, IF IT STILLWORKS, OBVIOUSLY THE BETTER OPTION THAN AN UNOFFICIAL UPDATE

You should get a slew of updates. They will be for POSReady 2009, Windows XP, Internet Explorer and of course definition updates for Security Essentials (if you're running it) and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

I got into the BIOS, and then moved across to boot order, and then choose cd from there, and set it as first boot, by pressing f5/f6 buttons to move it up to the top, then pressed f10 to save settings, and allowed it to restart. But the 'start from cd ' prompt did not appear and instead a black blank screen appeared with a blinking cursor. While rebooting when the “Enter” (return) button was pressed intermittently a beep sound started to come when the Enter key was pressed when the above mentioned black screen appeared.

Internet is accessible via a router in the Directory Service Repair mode. I wonder whether clicking on the tab “TIP: Click Here to Repair/Restore Missing Windows Files” that appears in the Majorgeeks download page will fix the corrupted OS.

    I doubt it.

The fact that your computer won't boot to the CD makes me suspect that your malware problem may have been worse than originally suspected. I don't know if you got a Rootkit or even a BIOS virus. A Rootkit could be gotten rid of by wiping the drive but a BIOS virus is beyond my scope of knowledge.

Are you sure this is just a corrupted OS? Have you attempted using "Tweaking Windows Repair" in Safe Mode?

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_windows_repair.html

BTW, aging RAM modules that can write data erroneously to the hard drive. Rootkits are far more common that BIOS viruses but they do exist. If the PROM is not removable or cannot be flashed from a runtime environment then a motherboard replacement could be in order.

Make, model, and date of the BIOS PLEASE. When requesting support ALWAYS tell us about your machine.

Attempt on using "Tweaking Windows Repair" in Safe Mode did not work.

When Reimage was run it reported that the temperature of the Hard Drive was dangerously high (104◦F)

The OS worked alright even after restarting prior to this problem. After the items in the Quarantine in Superantispyware, Malwarebytes & Comodo Antovirus were removed and System Restore was turned off, on restarting the problem occured.

This Windows OS was installed in Thailand and a CD was not received.

How did you come up with re-installation media (CD)? Did you copy a Win XP CD's files to another CD or burn a Win XP .ISO to a CD? If you copied a CD's files to another CD, the requisite boot information doesn't get copied and the CD won't boot. You need to burn an .ISO to CD so that the boot information is transferred as well.

I have 2 XP CDs which were received for 2 other desktops. These were used to re-install XP in other computers when it their OSs got corrupted. I can't figure out why it does not work in this laptop.

You'll need to enter BIOS Setup by repeatedly pressing the ESC key after you power up the laptop. Then you should be able to change the boot order so the CD ROM is first. I don't know if this is what you did even though you said you entered BIOS.

You also said "Press any key to boot from CD..." didn't appear. If you changed boot order correctly and didn't get that prompt, it could mean one or both CDs have scratches or debris on them OR the CD ROM needs laser lens cleaning or replacement. Since I don't have the laptop or the CDs in front of me, I can't determine which is the case. But, this is an older laptop and parts DO fail.

You list specifications for the laptop that indicate it could run Windows 7 or even 8.1 despite the fact that you don't "like" later versions of Windows. It may be necessary to "take the plunge" to help prevent future scenarios like you have now. Windows 7 and 8.1 are much more secure.

FYI, 104° F is NOT an excessively high temperature for your hard drive. MY two laptops both have SSDs (which run cooler than hard drives) and their temperatures are CONSTANTLY around 104° F. A temperature of 104° C (219° F) IS excessively high and can definitely lead to part(s) failure. Make sure that any ventilation holes are not blocked and that there's no stifling dust/debris in them. Listen carefully for fan noise to make sure the fan(s) is/are working.
