I found my Comcast router within the gateway which also contains the modem wide open; that is someone got past my logon and even my keys were exposed. If I check to stop remote admin management there is work to be done I cannot understand. Should I bridge their router and use my own router. I have to use a gateway as the phone needs the RJ45.
I used to bridge them but my old router is NG.

You need to change the log in details and passwords for both. You should get immediate telephone advice from Comcast Technical Support.

I have a new log in password and a 15 character key. The point is Comcast can still bypass my log on and see my key.
There is a place to disable management from remote control but it is too complicated for me.

Have you spoken with Comcast to explain your worries? They are your supplier and you are their customer.

Can you explain just what has happened to cause you to come to this conclusion peter? Are you saying it's something Comcast have done?

I just got off the phone. They said they cannot see my side of the router and that I likely forgot to log out last time explaining why the router was open when I entered the 10.0.0.1 to access it.
After a chat I feel secure with a new and strong password to log in and a very strong key.
I see no need for a router.
I was alarmed to see my router open for the world to see.
The Comcast techs do not know about networking;one must ask for that dept.
Sorry about the alarm; back to the yellow pad and pencil.

A router IS needed if you want WiFi - no router no Wifi.
It doesn't matter in the slightest if your network name can be seen - it is the password that protects it, and your security software that stops hacking.

    >I see no need for an extra router as 1 router in an integral part of the gateway I said I had in post #1.

    >My preference was to disable the hotpot in my devices, thanks.

If Comcast can disable an open hotspot (if that really does exist without needing a PW which I dont believe), fine.
But if you already have a router and a modem (they are not the same and a modem doesn't allow you or anyone else to connect any device wirelessly) I don't see the problem. I suspect you are seeing a problem where one does not exist.

I'm reading this that peter has typed 10.0.0.1 into his browser and was given access to the router config, including the wireless password, without being asked for a password. Comcast's explanation that he probably hadn't logged off last time sounds wrong to me. Peter, is this still happening or are you now being asked for a password?

Hi Bernie. I set up a new log in and key and now when I type 10.0.0.1, I have to log in as it should be.
I was alarmed the time I referred to when my router was wide open without logging in, key and all.

It seems to be OK now, and thank you for your courteous post.
    Peter
